Join both or one of our online self-study boot camps and learn/practice the Japanese alphabets in your own time! \n \nWhat is this about? \nWhether you are a complete beginner or just want to brush up on your Hiragana and/or Katakana skills\, we invite you to join one or both of 2 course offerings: one for Hiragana\, and one for Katakana.\nThese are two structured self-study courses where you can learn and practice the Japanese alphabets using free resources\, learning apps\, and online games\, as well as exercises developed by us. \nCourse duration: From Monday August 14 to Sunday September 3* ≪ Those who finish all the tasks by September 3 will be entered into a draw to win prizes!\n* The Hiragana Boot Camp and Katakana Boot Camp both have the same duration.\n* September 3 is the recommended end date. He honed his artistic instincts as a curator while mingling with the likes of YOKOO Tadanori\, one of Japan’s leading artists\, and such renowned art directors as ISHIOKA Eiko. Ginza Graphic Gallery\, where Kitazawa has worked for decades\, now enjoys a global reputation as the “Mecca of graphic design.” Kitazawa’s mission is to “point to the direction of new design in anticipating the times” and “pass on graphic design—which developed alongside the cultures of paper and printing—to future generations.” \nKitazawa joined the Dai Nippon Printing Co.\, Ltd. (DNP) in April 1980 where he was in charge of planning and making catalogs\, calendars and PR magazines at the company’s Creative Design Center (CDC). Since 1990\, he has been head curator at ggg while also being committed to the work of DNP Foundation for Cultural Promotion since 2008. After studying film in Osaka\, he started working as a director of TV productions. A subtle dramatist and chronicler of gay subculture in Japan\, Hashiguchi won the PIA Film Festival scholarship for his short film\, A Secret Evening (Yūbe no Himitsu\, 1989)\, and thus was able to fund his first low-budget feature\, A Touch of Fever (Hatachi no binetsu\, 1993). This bleak yet compassionate story of the lives of teenage hustlers in Tokyo was followed by Like Grains of Sand (Nagisa no Shindobaddo\, 1995)\, an appealingly quirky rites-of-passage movie about a high school boy’s crush on his best friend. Both films were intelligent examinations of the fluidity of youthful sexual identity. Hashiguchi’s next work was Hush! (Hasshu\, 2001)\, a melancholy comedy about the triangular relationship between a closeted\, thirty-something gay man\, his partner\, and the unhappy woman who wants him to father her child. Looser and freer in style than his earlier films\, it hinted that homosexuality might be liberating in the context of Japan’s restrictive family structures. \nFrom Director Hashiguchi: \nWhat I was trying to do was to portray characters at that juncture in their lives\, a point at which they went through bad experiences but want to overcome those difficulties. Subsequently\, after producing a number of mainly animated shorts\, he began working on his independently financed film\, ON-GAKU: Our Sound. \nAnimated almost entirely by Director Iwaisawa\, and featuring a lead performance by Japanese alt-rock legend SAKAMOTO Shintaro\, ON-GAKU brings its own sound and vision to the OHASHI Hiroyuki manga from which it was adapted. DESCRIPTION:Quelles sont les raisons qui influencent le désir d’enfant des femmes japonaises? Quels freins les empêchent d’avoir des enfants si elles le veulent? Quelle est la place des pères dans leur famille? L’implication des pères japonais a-t-il changé depuis que le gouvernement a mis en place des mesures pour les encourager? Et comment la situation japonaise se compare à l’utilisation des congés de paternité au Québec et au Canada? Cette conférence explorera les réponses à ces questions à travers les résultats d’une maîtrise de sociologie sur les femmes japonaises\, d’un doctorat portant sur les pères québécois et d’un postdoctorat supporté par une bourse de la Fondation Japon\, ayant pour thème l’utilisation des congés parentaux par les pères et l’image changeante des mères au Japon. \nLa conférence se donnera en français avec un résumé en japonais.  \nIl s’agit de la première conférence donnée en français organisée par la JFT\, qui aura lieu à l’Université du Québec à Montréal.   \nL’ouverture des portes est à 18h30. SUMMARY:Into the World of Sumo
DESCRIPTION:From 2004 to 2013\, Kaido Höövelson trained and competed in Japan as a professional sumo wrestler under the name Baruto Kaito. An Estonian national\, Baruto became one of a handful of non-Japanese sumo wrestlers to ever reach the rank of ōzeki\, the second highest rank in the sport. In this joint presentation by The Japan Foundation\, Toronto and the Estonian Museum Canada\, we will sit down with Baruto to discuss his foray into the world of sumo wrestling\, his experiences as a foreign practitioner of Japan’s national sport\, the challenges he faced in and outside the ring\, memorable matches and opponents\, and much more. \nQ&A will follow the presentation. Guests will have an opportunity to take pictures with Baruto. \n \n  \n \nBaruto Kaito was born Kaido Höövelson in 1984 in Estonia. In school he played basketball\, but soon decided to pursue judo and later sumo. In 2004\, Hidetoshi Tanaka\, the president of the International Sumo Federation\, invited him to Japan. He rose to the top tier of the sport in only 2 years\, earned the sekiwake title in 2007\, and reached the ōzeki tier in 2010. In 2012\, he won the Emperor’s Cup and became the world champion in professional sumo wrestling. That same year\, he was forced to quit a tournament because of injuries\, lost the ōzeki title\, and decided to leave his career as an athlete behind in September 2013 due to a persistent knee injury. During his career\, he earned 5 special awards for his fighting spirit\, one for best achievement\, and another for his technique. \nBaruto’s stellar athletic career and charming personality made way for him to become a huge star in Japan\, not only in the wrestling ring but also in public life\, in television\, and elsewhere. His achievements have been highly regarded in Estonia as well. Kaido Höövelson received the Order of the Estonian Olympic Committee (2011)\, the Order of the White Star third class (2012)\, and the Medal of Estonian Honour and Glory (2018). From 2019-2023\, he was a representative in Estonian Parliament as a member of the Estonian Centre Party. Currently\, Kaido Höövelson lives in Estonia but visits Japan often for the development of Estonian-Japanese business relations. This Japanese skier and daredevil became the first person to ever ski on the treacherous slopes of the highest mountain in the world\, descending nearly 4200 feet. While becoming famous in Japan for his achievement\, it wasn’t until Canadian filmmaker F.R. Crawley released this documentary that he received widespread international attention. \nShowing all of the dangers and thrilling moments of his journey up and down the mountain\, this tense film won the Oscar for Best Documentary and became a formative work in the sports documentary genre. \nTo make this event extra special\, we are opening our gallery for special early preview of our new exhibition\, A Sense of Movement: Japanese Sports Posters\, one day ahead of our public opening on April 20.
