After graduating high school\, he apprenticed under TERUO Ishii. He began working with video production on location for live-action movies and started producing animation on the side. In 2008 he released his first animated work\, Fukuraicho\, Man in the Tunnel Alley. Subsequently\, after producing a number of mainly animated shorts\, he began working on his independently financed film\, ON-GAKU: Our Sound. \nAnimated almost entirely by Director Iwaisawa\, and featuring a lead performance by Japanese alt-rock legend SAKAMOTO Shintaro\, ON-GAKU brings its own sound and vision to the OHASHI Hiroyuki manga from which it was adapted. DESCRIPTION:The Japan Foundation\, Toronto is back for the city’s annual Doors Open event! We will be opening our doors once again on May 27 and May 28\, along with more than 100 other buildings and sites across Toronto. This year\, the theme is “City of Sound\,” and we are delighted to bring the Sounds of Japan to Toronto with our lineup of activities for everyone to enjoy. \nWe will be open from 10:30 AM – 4:30 PM on both days. Drop-ins are more than welcome! \nJoin us for a special weekend filled with animated films\, Japanese sports posters\, library games\, and fun for the whole family! \nStay updated with us by following us on social media (Instagram\, Facebook\, Twitter) and subscribe to our weekly newsletter. \n \n \nExtended Gallery Hours \nOur current exhibition is the brilliant A Sense of Movement: Japanese Sports Posters and will be open for public viewing with extended hours on both days. A Sense of Movement is an impressive international exhibition that explores the connection between Japanese graphic design and sports. Our collection presents a total of 68 pieces from 24 designers. Join us to experience the fruit of Japan’s rich graphic design culture\, from the 1964 Tokyo Summer Olympics to present day. \nPre-registrations are open. Players will need to find these hints\, choose the correct sound effect stamp\, and use those stamps to fill out the empty speech bubbles on a manga frame. Collect all three stamps to get a special prize! \n \n \nLibrary Photo Booth: Be like a manga character! \nTake a special picture at our photo booth! Speech bubble props will be available and will feature popular sound effects/onomatopoeia used in manga to connect with the theme of sound. \n \n \nAnimated Short Films & Soundscapes of Japan \nSoak in a lineup of impressive animated short films in our event hall\, created by animation students of the Tokyo University of the Arts. Read more about the films here. \nCurated by acclaimed animation filmmaker and educator YAMAMURA Koji\, half of these animated films were chosen with the theme of “sound” (to reflect this year’s Doors Open theme\, “City of Sound”) and the other half relates to the theme of “sports” (in conjunction with our Japanese Sports Posters exhibition). \nIn between each film\, relax to short soundscape videos inspired by the “100 Soundscapes of Japan.” These sounds were chosen in 1996 in an effort to combat noise pollution and promote protection of the environment. \n \n \nStaff Music Playlist \nThe JFT staff have curated a diverse playlist of their favourite Japanese music that will be played throughout both days in our library. QR codes will be available on-site for you to scan so that you can listen to the playlist after your visit! \n

They are like zombies; devoid of all emotion. With no family\, no future\, no dreams\, and no way to move forward\, the young teens decide that the first level of this new existence involves salvaging a gaming console\, an old electric bass\, and a charred wok from their former homes—just enough to start a band-and then conquer the world. His award-winning short film garnered attention both in Japan and around the world for its compelling cinematography\, clever storytelling\, and entrancing music\, promising the birth of a new talent in the wake of veterans such as IWAI Shunji (A Bride for Rip Van Winkle) and NAKA SHIMA Tetsuya (The World of Kanako). DESCRIPTION:Quelles sont les raisons qui influencent le désir d’enfant des femmes japonaises? Quels freins les empêchent d’avoir des enfants si elles le veulent? Quelle est la place des pères dans leur famille? L’implication des pères japonais a-t-il changé depuis que le gouvernement a mis en place des mesures pour les encourager? Et comment la situation japonaise se compare à l’utilisation des congés de paternité au Québec et au Canada? Cette conférence explorera les réponses à ces questions à travers les résultats d’une maîtrise de sociologie sur les femmes japonaises\, d’un doctorat portant sur les pères québécois et d’un postdoctorat supporté par une bourse de la Fondation Japon\, ayant pour thème l’utilisation des congés parentaux par les pères et l’image changeante des mères au Japon. \nLa conférence se donnera en français avec un résumé en japonais.  \nIl s’agit de la première conférence donnée en français organisée par la JFT\, qui aura lieu à l’Université du Québec à Montréal.   \nL’ouverture des portes est à 18h30. Café et collation seront servis. \nRSVP SUR EVENTBRITE \nヴァレリー・アルヴェさんは、国際交流基金日本研究フェローとして、2022 年-2023年に訪日研究を実施しました。本講演では、はじめに、「子供を産みたい日本女性を阻む壁」について扱ったアルヴェさんの修士論文について説明します。その後、多くの文献や資料などから、カナダ東部のケベック州とカナダの他の州における育児休業の適用状況を比較します。 2020年の統計によれば、ケベック州では79%もの父親が平均７週間の育児休暇を取得しています。そして、最後に訪日時の研究内容である「母親の変化するイメージと育児政策における父親の役割」について簡単に説明します。 \n会場はケベック大学モントリオール校（UQAM）、講演はフランス語と日本語（要約）で行われます。 \n午後6時30分開場、午後7時開演、講演後に軽食を提供します。 \nEVENTBRITE で登録する \n \n \nValérie Harvey a vécu deux ans et demi au Japon\, à Kyoto. Elle a présenté ce pays dans son livre Passion Japon et a traduit en français la poétesse Misuzu Kanéko. \nElle est également sociologue. Elle a fait sa maîtrise à propos des femmes japonaises; son doctorat sur les pères québécois\, puis elle vient de compléter un postdoctorat à la Kônan University\, sur les pères et les mères japonaises\, soutenue par la Japan Foundation. \nElle intervient souvent sur les ondes de Radio-Canada pour parler du monde entier\, et très souvent du Japon. Elle a réalisé huit courts documentaires de la série Konnichiwa こんにちは sur YouTube qui présentent les mariages\, la calligraphie\, les saisons de Kyoto\, la gestion des déchets\, les trains\, les vins japonais\, les châteaux et l’identité okinawaïenne. \nComme autrice\, elle a imaginé un Japon nordique dans trois romans fantasy Les Fleurs du Nord (Prix jeunesse des univers parallèles 2018)\, L’Ombre du Shinobi et L’Héritage du Kami. Elle a aussi composé plusieurs chansons en japonais et a remporté le prix spécial du jury au concours Nodo Jiman/Let’s sing Japanese Songs de la NHK en 2021. \n \nCo-presenter:

SUMMARY:Into the World of Sumo
DESCRIPTION:From 2004 to 2013\, Kaido Höövelson trained and competed in Japan as a professional sumo wrestler under the name Baruto Kaito. An Estonian national\, Baruto became one of a handful of non-Japanese sumo wrestlers to ever reach the rank of ōzeki\, the second highest rank in the sport. In this joint presentation by The Japan Foundation\, Toronto and the Estonian Museum Canada\, we will sit down with Baruto to discuss his foray into the world of sumo wrestling\, his experiences as a foreign practitioner of Japan’s national sport\, the challenges he faced in and outside the ring\, memorable matches and opponents\, and much more. \nQ&A will follow the presentation. Guests will have an opportunity to take pictures with Baruto. \n \n  \n \nBaruto Kaito was born Kaido Höövelson in 1984 in Estonia. In school he played basketball\, but soon decided to pursue judo and later sumo. In 2004\, Hidetoshi Tanaka\, the president of the International Sumo Federation\, invited him to Japan. He rose to the top tier of the sport in only 2 years\, earned the sekiwake title in 2007\, and reached the ōzeki tier in 2010. In 2012\, he won the Emperor’s Cup and became the world champion in professional sumo wrestling. That same year\, he was forced to quit a tournament because of injuries\, lost the ōzeki title\, and decided to leave his career as an athlete behind in September 2013 due to a persistent knee injury. During his career\, he earned 5 special awards for his fighting spirit\, one for best achievement\, and another for his technique. \nBaruto’s stellar athletic career and charming personality made way for him to become a huge star in Japan\, not only in the wrestling ring but also in public life\, in television\, and elsewhere. His achievements have been highly regarded in Estonia as well. Kaido Höövelson received the Order of the Estonian Olympic Committee (2011)\, the Order of the White Star third class (2012)\, and the Medal of Estonian Honour and Glory (2018). From 2019-2023\, he was a representative in Estonian Parliament as a member of the Estonian Centre Party. Currently\, Kaido Höövelson lives in Estonia but visits Japan often for the development of Estonian-Japanese business relations. This Japanese skier and daredevil became the first person to ever ski on the treacherous slopes of the highest mountain in the world\, descending nearly 4200 feet. While becoming famous in Japan for his achievement\, it wasn’t until Canadian filmmaker F.R. Crawley released this documentary that he received widespread international attention. \nShowing all of the dangers and thrilling moments of his journey up and down the mountain\, this tense film won the Oscar for Best Documentary and became a formative work in the sports documentary genre. \nTo make this event extra special\, we are opening our gallery for special early preview of our new exhibition\, A Sense of Movement: Japanese Sports Posters\, one day ahead of our public opening on April 20.
