At the lecture\, participants will learn about Japanese gardens\, techniques and plants and be able to ask questions to both Hugo Torii and the Itabashi Garden Designer\, Virginia Burt. \nTansley Woods Community Centre\, Rooms 1 & 2 \n1996 Itabashi Way \nBurlington\, Ontario\, L7M 4J8 \n  \nHugo TORII is currently the Director of Ground Maintenance at the Portland Japanese Garden in Portland\, Oregon. He earned his Master’s degree in Landscape Design from the Kyoto University of Art and Design and has studied both Japanese gardens and Japanese aesthetics in horticulture; he also has a background in floristry. During his career to date\, Hugo Torii has spent over 3 years at Peter Berg Landscape Design in Rheinland-Pfalz\, Germany\, and 12 years’ working for Ueyakato Landscape Co. Ltd.\, as a Gardener and Landscape Architect in Kyoto\, Japan. During this time he also managed several projects of note including the Japanese garden and greeneries for the 24-hectare Keihanna Commemorative Park and the 5\,000 square-meter Yosuien Japanese strolling pond garden. Other projects included the annual maintenance of pine trees at Nijo Castle and Team Leader in the street trees maintenance program of Kyoto City. \n  \nVirginia Burt\, FCSLA\, FASLA\,  Virginia Burt Designs \nSince founding Virginia Burt Designs (VBD) in 1996\, Virginia has designed and directed healing landscapes for private residential\, educational and public clients. VBD has established a reputation for creating gardens and landscapes of meaning. Virginia’s work has achieved international recognition receiving multiple awards from the American Society of Landscape Architects\, Palladio and Canadian Society of Landscape Architects. She is one of seven women in the world with Fellowships from both societies for outstanding contribution to the profession. Clients appreciate and value her deep respect for place and for the human dimensions of each project. Virginia gets things built – beautifully.

DESCRIPTION:Sayoko\, single and in her thirties\, lives alone in her  traditional Japanese house- alone\, that is\, except for the many cats who are inexplicably drawn into her orbit. She passes her time tending to her house\, taking care of the family altar of her beloved grandmother\, and engaging in eclectic entrepreneurial projects\, including renting out cats to lonely people. Looking at pamphlets outlining other options he might follow\, he is captivated by a girl pictured in one of them and signs up for a year as a “green” trainee\, learning the basics of forestry. A month of basic training later\, he ends up in Kamusari\, a village beyond cell-phone service deep in the wooded mountains of rural Japan whose population is outnumbered by the local deer and pit vipers. His instructor/landlord/mentor Yoki is a wild man\, the work is hard\, dirty\, and dangerous\, and Yuki is desperately looking for a way to escape when he realizes that the girl in the picture\, Naoki\, is living right there in the village with him. \nThus encouraged\, he stays on and gradually finds his place both at work and in the village.
