SUMMARY:Re-engineering Reproductive Futures in Japanese Science Fiction
DESCRIPTION:Scholars and pundits of contemporary Japan regularly note statistics that point to an alarming downturn in population growth (shōshi kōreika). The forecast of population decline has led to a renewed focus on “reproductive futurism\,” which is the belief that humans must reproduce to ensure a stable future. In Japan\, female science fiction and speculative fiction writers have offered provocative critiques of reproductive futurism in order to resist discourse pertaining to reproductive family structures and sexuality. \nIn this talk\, we will look at how these authors use nonhuman perspectives and entities such as aliens\, cyborgs\, and bioengineered entities to defamiliarize the familiar images of reproduction\, sexuality\, and ideal family structure produced by contemporary Japanese social discourse. The talk will explore specific cases of how these female authors re-engineer alternative futures of reproductive bodies and reproductive family to critique the extant reproductive heterosexual and patriarchal family system. \n\nThis is an exclusively online event. Prior registration is required. A secure link to the lecture will be sent to the registered email address before the start of the event.\n\n\nDr. Kazue Harada is an Assistant Professor of Japanese in the Department of German\, Russian\, Asian\, and Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures\, at Miami University\, Ohio. She studied at the University of British Columbia and Washington University in St. Louis. Her research interest is modern and contemporary Japanese literature\, with a focus on the exploration of gender and sexuality via speculative and science fiction. She is currently working on a book manuscript titled Re-engineering (Re)productive Futures: Sexuality\, Mother\, and Kinship in Japanese Speculative Fiction. Her articles have appeared in U.S.-Japan Women’s Journal and Japanese Language and Literature. She is also a former recipient of the Japanese Foundation dissertation fellowship in 2012.

SUMMARY:The Many Lives of a Japanese Classic
DESCRIPTION:The large corpus of literary works by accomplished and highly educated women writers that emerged during the Heian period (794–1185) in Japan played an important role in the creation of a national literary tradition. Despite their seeming timelessness\, these texts have elicited severe criticism and received intense praise over the centuries. Although written over a thousand years ago\, they continue to inform contemporary cultural production. \nThis talk considers the fixed images of Japanese women writers of the distant past and the constructed nature of their writing focusing on one text\, The Pillow Book (Makura no sōshi\, early 11th c.). It examines interpretations of the work and images of its author Sei Shōnagon (964?–after 1027) that emerged in the years between the 17th century and the early 20th century and shows that although they were not shaped through references to historical documents and direct interactions with The Pillow Book\, these views still linger in contemporary scholarship and popular culture. \n\nThis is an exclusively online event. Prior registration is required. A secure link to the lecture will be sent to the registered email address before the start of the event.\n\n\nDr. Gergana Ivanova is Associate Professor of Japanese Literature and Culture at the University of Cincinnati. She holds a Ph.D. in Asian Studies from the University of British Columbia. From 2010-2011\, she carried out research at Sophia University\, Tokyo\, as a Japan Foundation Fellow. Her research interests include the reception history of Japanese classical literature\, early modern erotic and didactic literature\, and present-day manga representations of the past. She is the author of Unbinding the Pillow Book: The Many Lives of a Classic (Columbia University Press\, 2018). Her current book project examines the eroticization of eleventh-century women writers in early modern Japan. She is also completing a co-translation of One Hundred Exemplary Women\, One Poem Each (Retsujo hyakunin isshu\, 1847).

SUMMARY:Marugoto Teaching Material Project: 1. Project outline explanation\, project member decision
\nまるごと中級1（B1）概要説明：https://www.marugoto.org/about/ \n想定される対象学習者：成人、大学生など \n資料集サンプル： \n\n中級１　トピック１：https://tr.jpf.go.jp/wp-content/uploads/資料集サンプル　中級1　トピックpdf\n\nプロジェクト参加条件：１．２．の両日にご参加可能なカナダ在住の日本語教師の方々 \nJFTスタッフ：呉屋　由郁子、齋藤　典子 \nお問い合わせ先：齋藤　典子　nsaito@jftor.org \n\nMarugoto Teaching Material Project\nIn order to make it easier to use Marugoto textbooks in Canadian Japanese-language education\, we are planning a project to create a collection of materials to be used as a reference by teachers. Our aim is that this “Reference Collection” will be useful in both synchronous and asynchronous online classes through bringing together useful digital resources\, videos\, etc. that can be used with the Marugoto textbooks. \nThis current project will target materials to use with Marugoto Intermediate B1\, specifically. Topics/sections of the textbook will be divided amongst the project members\, and each group or person will create a “Resource Collection” for the section they are tasked with. Examples of materials are convenient websites used by the project members or self-made teaching materials. Something made specifically for this project is also welcome! We hope that this can be an opportunity for teachers to bring together useful resources they can use in their own classrooms. The final collection will also be shared on our website so it can be used by everyone in the future. \nOn August 8 we will have a session to explain the outline of the project before we ask individuals to confirm their participation\, so please feel free to join us if you are interested. \nWe look forward to meeting teachers interested in joining our Maruguto Teaching Material Project! \nDate and Time: \n1. Fans worldwide tend to even regard this pictorial compendium by ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai as the origin of today’s manga. But the outward appearance of these two types of manga does not immediately suggest a continuous tradition. Do present-day graphic narratives and the master’s “diverse drawings” share anything other than a name? Unlike past exhibitions of Hokusai’s work\, Manga Hokusai Manga approaches the Hokusai Manga from the perspective of contemporary Japanese comics\, focusing on genre\, pictorial storytelling and participatory culture rather than the integration of word and image or the role of popular characters. And instead of aiming at a historiographic verification of influences\, the exhibition invites viewers to ponder their own notions about manga by comparing works from different periods while exploring the diversity therein.
