Kore-eda is widely considered Japan’s finest contemporary director and screenwriter. SUMMARY:From The Portapak to The Aniputer: Experimentation and Exchange in Early Japanese Video Art
DESCRIPTION:In February of 1972\, the Sony Showroom in Tokyo’s Ginza district hosted “Video Communication: D.I.Y. Kit\,” commonly considered the first exhibition of video art in Japan. Organized in part by Canadian artist Michael Goldberg\, a founding member of Vancouver’s long-running video art centre VIVO\, the interactive event encapsulated several defining elements of early Japanese video art: transnational collaboration\, support from adventurous technological corporations\, and formal creativity. \nInformed by research recently conducted through a Japan Foundation fellowship\, this presentation outlines the role of collaboration and experimentation in the first two decades of Japanese video art — particularly the fruitful exchanges of technology\, workshops\, and artworks between Japan and Canada — as seen through work by Japanese artists and collectives such as Video Earth Tokyo\, Video Hiroba\, and Keigo Yamamoto\, as well as the conceptually connected work of Vancouver-based contemporaries Goldberg\, Taki Bluesinger\, and more. \n\nThis is an exclusively online event. Prior registration is required. A secure link to the lecture will be sent to the registered email address 24 hours before the start of the event.\n\n\nJesse Cumming is a freelance curator\, researcher\, and writer based in Toronto\, Canada. He has curated\, co-curated\, and presented programs with The Museum of Modern Art\, Anthology Film Archives\, The Musée des Beaux Arts Montreal\, Collectif Jeune Cinéma\, Art Toronto\, Concordia University\, The City of Vancouver Archives\, and more. From 2014 to 2016 he contributed to Toronto experimental film and media programming collective Pleasure Dome and from 2016 to 2019 served as a Programming Associate with the Toronto International Film Festival. His writing has appeared in Cinema Scope\, The Brooklyn Rail\, Hyperallergic\, Canadian Art\, Prefix Photo\, MUBI Notebook\, NECSUS Journal\, Filmmaker\, and more. He presently sits on the steering committee of the Toronto Film & Media Seminar and is a founding collective member of MICE Magazine\, a web and print publication dedicated to Moving Image Culture\, Etc. In 2016 he established Vertical Features\, a screening series dedicated to experimental non-fiction film and video.

He specializes in the folktales of his native region of Iwate Prefecture. \nToshiki Mori \nAn actor\, storyteller\, singer and writer. Toshiki was born in Fukushima\, Japan. He started his career as storyteller of Kamishibai in Toronto and has been actively performing in Montreal and at various schools\, libraries and cultural events throughout Toronto. \nSeiko Shirafuji \nBorn in Yamaguchi Prefecture\, she is a singer and folk dancer and a retired medical doctor. Seiko has been performing in many community events and local festivals since 1995. \nYusuke Tanaka \nA veteran translator\, writer\, director of the Katari Storytelling Festival since 1994. He has been telling stories of the Ainu people\, and his own adaptations of Japanese folklore in many places including New York\, Seoul\, Kyoto\, Tokyo and Sapporo. \nNoriko Yamamoto \nA professional dancer\, mime\, silent storyteller\, and visual artist. Since moving to Toronto from Tokyo in 1994\, Noriko has added Nia to her repertoire. She performs regularly at schools\, libraries\, festivals\, and at various other events. \n\n  \n  \n  \n

Planned and produced by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Tokyo Film Association.  \n\n  \nFebruary 25\, 2020 6:30 PM \nSAPPORO WINTER OLYMPICS 札幌オリンピック\nDirected by Masahiro SHINODA 1972\, 167 min. [Documentary] New HD digital transfer \n  \nMasahiro Shinoda’s interest in sports and experience as an athlete\, he was a long-distance runner\, made him an ideal choice to direct the official film of the XI Olympic Winter Games Sapporo 1972. His work is marked by its gravitas\, and this can be felt in the opening Torch Relay sequence. Few Olympic films can boast such aesthetically pleasing images as this one. Shinoda takes full advantage of the ‘Scope format\, and of the superb equipment at his disposal. DESCRIPTION:JFT Book Club Special Edition with The European Book Club \nOn Thursday February 20\, 2020\, the JFT Book Club will join the European Book Club and discuss Memoirs of a Polar Bear by Yoko Tawada. \n\nMemoirs of a Polar Bear stars three generations of talented writers and performers. Famous stars of the literary world\, the circus\, and the zoo\, they happen to be polar bears who move human society. In part one\, the matriarch\, enjoying “the intimacy of being alone with my pen\,” accidentally writes a bestselling autobiography in the Soviet Union. In part two\, her daughter Tosca moves to East Germany and pioneers a thrilling circus act. And Tosca’s son – the last of their line – is Knut\, born in part three and raised by a human keeper in relatively happy circumstances in the Berlin zoo. \nYoko Tawada was born in Tokyo in 1960\, moved to Hamburg when she was twenty-two\, and then to Berlin in 2006. She writes in both Japanese and German\, and has published several books – stories\, novels\, poems\, plays\, essays – in both languages.
