SUMMARY:How to Learn Japanese Kanji
DESCRIPTION:Due to reaching capacity\, the RSVP is closed for additional guests.  \nFor many learners of Japanese\, kanji present a significant hurdle in mastering the language. In this lecture\, Dr. Yukiyo Hamakawa (Mejiro University) will not teach kanji\, but instead look at how people can best learn them\, including: \n・Various methods to organize and create associations to better remember kanji. \n・How to make learning more enjoyable – and effective. \n・Where and how kanji learning is utilized. \nAnyone who is interested in learning kanji\, teaching kanji\, or just learning about kanji is welcome to join! \nInquiries\nFor inquiries\, please contact Noriko Saito at nsaito@jftor.org. \n\n \nYukiyo Hamakawa is an associate professor in the Department of Japanese and Japanese Language Education at Mejiro University\, and has her PhD from Saitama University. Her work focuses on kanji education (both learning and instruction) within the field of Japanese language education. She has been involved in several books on teaching kanji\, including editing 『日本語教師のための実践・漢字指導』 (くろしろ出版 2010)\, and co-authoring the book on teaching letters and vocabulary\, 『文字・語彙を教える』 (ひつじ書房 2011) in the Japan Foundation’s Nihongo Kyôjuhô series. She has been involved with the JSL Kanji Research Group since 2004\, and 日本語教育に関わる教職員のためのメンタルヘルス研究会 (Mental Health Study Group for Japanese Language Educators) since 2018.

It is an excellent chance to hear his playing\, which conveys a feeling close to the spirit of the original pioneer Nitaboh. \nSee Hiromitsu Agatsuma LIVE at the AGA-SHIO concert!  concert details here > \nMore About Hiromitsu Agatsuma’s techniques revealed on the screen; \nThe process to create an animation whose movements match the sound of the shamisen\, the key element of “NITABOH\,” was not easy\, either. The skilled shamisen player Hiromitsu Agatsuma covered Nitaro’s shamisen performance in the move. In contrast to traditional animations\, we tried to show the subtle movements of the plectrum and fingers pressed on the three strings. The music scenes from “NITABOH” were created to exactly match the shamisen music used in the movie. \nFirst we shot the real shamisen performance and recorded it on videotape. Watching the videotape\, we created the timesheets that comprised a considerable numbers of frames (24 frames per second). Based on the videotape and the timesheets\, the animators drew the animation – the movement of the shamisen and its player. At one point the plectrum hits the strings nine times in one second; in order to animate the scene\, we need to allocate quite a few animation cells to just one frame. An ordinary theatrical animation movie requires only one cell per two to three frames. Meanwhile\, every shamisen scene in “NITABOH” incorporated many cells per one frame. We all appreciate the painstaking effort of the production staff who kept close check-ups at each scene.

Through the craftsmanship and original creativity imbedded in those design products the exhibition examine Japanese tradition and aesthetic sensitivity. \n  \n日本酒のための陶磁器デザイン展 \n日本酒のために制作された現代のデザイン作品を、陶磁器に特定して展示し、 \nデザインに込められた創意や配慮を通じて、日本人の美意識を探求する。 \n \n  \nAugust 7 – October 9\, 2019 \nGALLERY HOURS \nMon 11:30 am – 6:30 pm EXTENDED HOURS \nTues 11:30 am – 4:30 pm \nWed 11:30 am – 4:30 pm \nThurs 11:30 am – 6:30 pm EXTENDED HOURS \nFri 11:30 am – 4:30 pm \n  \nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto \n2 Bloor Street East \nHudson’s Bay Centre\, 3rd floor \nAbove Royal Bank of Canada \nwww.jftor.org 416.966.1600 x229 \n  \nADMISSION: FREE \n  \nSaturday openings: \n11:00 am – 4:00 pm \nAugust 10\, 24\, September 7\, 21\, October 5 \nClosed: Other Saturdays and Sundays \nSeptember 2 (Labour Day) \n  \nCeramic Design for Sake\n \nSake\, often referred to as Japanese rice wine\, is the national beverage of Japan.  Mythological documents call Japan by the name Mizuho-no-kuni or Land of Abundant Rice Fields\, and the rice was gifted to the nation by the sun goddess Amaterasu from her divine rice paddies in heaven.  In Shinto ceremonies sake has been one of the most sacred offerings to the gods alongside rice. \n  \nPeople in the Land of Abundant Rice Fields developed their rich tradition in serving sake\, devising various sets of cups and servers.  When sake is served hot\, Tokkuri\, a bulbous flask with a narrow neck\, is used in order to prevent the heat from escaping.  For room-temperature serving\, Katakuchi\, spouted vessels\, are also used. \n  \nThe cups used for drinking sake are generally small because of the relatively higher percentage of alcohol by volume\, 18-20 %\, and the customary appreciation method of taking little sips.  Choko is a cylindrical vessel which can comfortably rest between index finger and thumb.  On casual occasions the Guinomi without Kōdai foot can work as a shot glass.  For ceremonial use\, the serving vessel would be the flatter\, wide-mouthed Sakazuki. \n  \nThe Land of Abundant Rice Fields also has a long successful history as The Land of Ceramics dating back even to the prehistoric era.  Current ceramic industry centres across Japan all have a history of over 300 years.  Receptacles for sake serving can be crafted out of wood\, lacquered wood\, glass or plastic\, but the ceramic industry provided the vast majority of the tools for appreciation of the national beverage. \n  \nThe production of sake in Japan has been declining since the mid-1970s\, competing in the market against beer\, wine\, and spirits.  However\, the quality of the products\, thanks to new brewing technology\, surpassed the past standard.  Sake is appreciated not only in Japan\, but worldwide.  In this new environment and conditions\, the contemporary ceramic industry in Japan expressed their creativity in their product design. \n  \nIn this exhibition\, over 130 pieces from local studios in the ceramic centres of Aichi\, Gifu\, Nagasaki\, and Saga are on display.  These are industrial products from studios or factories\, not from artisans’ private studios.  The exhibits are mass-produced\, but not necessarily machine-made\, in fact most are handcrafted.  The goal of these new designs must be contemporary and global: a deeper\, more sophisticated appreciation of sake in ordinary lives by a wider range of people\, including those overseas.

The Hyogo Modern Senior Fashion Show began ten years after the earthquake and held its 11th show in 2015. Yet\, it appears that teachers do not know much about the other institutions\, courses or programmes. This lack of understanding can sometimes be found even within the same institution. We believe that it is very important and necessary for teachers to know what their current students have previously studied and in what type of environment that education took place. Similarly\, it is important to be informed of the available learning opportunities for students who wish to continue studying Japanese.  We believe it is essential for teachers to build a strong and active network that enables them to communicate with one another. Since December 2009\, the Canadian Association for Japanese Language Education (CAJLE) and the Japan Foundation\, Toronto have been co-organizing events to build a good foundation for the articulation of Japanese language education. \nIn the 30th event of the series\, we will host an EdCamp for Japanese Language Teachers. EdCamps are study groups where the participants play leading roles\, and discussion topics are decided by participants at registration and/or on the spot. DESCRIPTION:Kendo’s Grueling Challenge: The 120 second Test of Spirit\n心で闘う120秒　剣道・日本最難関試験に挑む\nDirector Hiroshi Tanami (1997) 48 minutes \nProduced by NHK\, English language version produced by JAMCO & The Japan Foundation \nJapanese fencing\, kendo (the way of the sword)\, combines sport with art\, and entrance into the highest ranks is dependent upon passing a gruelling examination. Two professional kendo practitioners\, Kenichi Ishida and Kai Miyamoto\, walk us through the finer points of this martial art as several candidates compete during the one-day hachidan qualifying exam. \nRANKING SYSTEM IN KENDO \nUnlike Judo or Karate\, Kendo does not have any visible marks or colored belts to indicate your rank. The beginner grades are called Kyu and start from 10 Kyu to 1 Kyu. \nOnce you reach 1 Kyu level\, you are ready to take the first master’s grade\, which is called Dan (equal to black belt in other Japanese martial arts). In kendo there are eight Dan\, starting with first Dan and ending with eight. \nThe Kendo eighth Dan exam is notoriously difficult\, and famous for having the lowest success rate in Japan (less than 1%). SUMMARY:Japanese Gardens: Visions and Practices of a Kyoto Gardener
DESCRIPTION:Reservations are now closed. Thank you for your interest. We will have a rush line starting 30 minutes before the event\, and will start to release unclaimed seats 10 minutes before the event. \nIn conjunction with our current exhibition\, Four Seasons of Gardens in Kyoto\, Hugo Torii will introduce his work and past projects in various Japanese gardens\, and give an overview of different Japanese garden styles. The talk will also cover topics such as how gardeners develop the essence of a garden through the combination of different features\, how the function of a Japanese garden influences garden design and Japanese gardening concepts and how they shape both our perception and our ability to experience and appreciate elements of a Japanese garden. \nHugo Torii is currently the Director of Ground Maintenance at the Portland Japanese Garden in Portland\, Oregon. He earned his Master’s degree in Landscape Design from the Kyoto University of Art and Design and has studied both Japanese gardens and Japanese aesthetics in horticulture; he also has a background in floristry. During his career to date\, Hugo Torii has spent over 3 years at Peter Berg Landscape Design in Rheinland-Pfalz\, Germany\, and 12 years’ working for Ueyakato Landscape Co. Ltd.\, as a Gardener and Landscape Architect in Kyoto\, Japan. During this time he also managed several projects of note including the Japanese garden and greeneries for the 24-hectare Keihanna Commemorative Park and the 5\,000 square-meter Yosuien Japanese strolling pond garden. Other projects included the annual maintenance of pine trees at Nijo Castle and Team Leader in the street trees maintenance program of Kyoto City.

We will have a rush line starting 30 minutes before the event\, and will start to release unclaimed seats 10 minutes before the event. \nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto is delighted to host Mr. Junichi Mitsubori as part of the 90th Anniversary Celebrations of Canada-Japan Relations\, for a special Japanese confectionery art/ wagashi demonstration. In this 40 minute performance\, Mr. Mitsubori will demonstrate the crafting of some exquisite nerikiri wagashi pieces. Speciality tools will be used in addition to some free-hand crafting\, to turn pieces of pliable and colourful nerikiri dough into artistic craft. Q and A to follow. \nJunichi Mitsubori is a third-generation wagashi artisan hailing from Yokosuka City\, Kanagawa. He founded his own school of wagashi\, Ichika-ryu of Kadō\, which uses bespoke utensils\, calculated gestures\, lighting and music to produce a highly stylized wagashi experience. Mr. Mitsubori’s delicate yet dynamic wagashi and his style of presentation has spread awareness of wagashi to an international audience.

Winding its way through visions of the future and traditional concepts\, nature\, concrete\, gardens and high-tech spaces\, the film explains how contemporary Japanese architects strive to unite modern ways with old philosophies in astounding constructions. \n\nABOUT THE BUILDING\nArchitecture\nYear: 1973\nStyle: Commercial/Industrial\nOriginal Architect: Crang & Boake \n\n  \n\nBuilding Description\nLocated in the heart of the city\, Japan Foundation Toronto (JFT) is on the third floor of the 35-storey Hudson Bay Centre\, which comprises a 535\,000 sq ft office tower\, the Bay department store\, Marriott Hotel\, condominiums and an extensive retail concourse with a variety of shops and services. The tower stands at 135 metres in height and is at the northeast corner of Yonge and Bloor Streets. The International Style office skyscraper was designed by architects Crang & Boake in 1973. The Japan Foundation Toronto established its office and cultural centre in the Colonnade in 1995 and was designed by international and Canadian design icon Yabu Pushelberg. In 2015\, the office moved to the current location and was designed by the global firm Interior Architects. The inspiration of the modern interior can be traced to design elements of traditional Japanese interiors.
