DESCRIPTION:CHIKYU FILMS  \nThis spring\, we will feature a series of films\, CHIKYU FILMS\, which will share the stories and people who examine the close relationship to our environment\, our earth\, or Chikyu 地球 in Japanese. \n\nSCIENCE NINJA TEAM GATCHAMAN: THE MOVIE\nApril 30\, 6:30 PM \nDirected by Hisayuki Toriumi (110 min.) 1978 \n  \nAnimated feature based on the popular 70’s series about a team of ninja scientists who battle the menace Galactor\, the technologically advanced villains trying to control earth’s natural resources. Recurring themes of Gatchaman involve conservation\, environmentalism and the responsible use of technology for progress. \nGatchaman debuted in 1972 and was created by Tatsuo Yoshida\, and produced by Tatsunoko Productions. Recurring themes of Gatchaman involve conservation\, environmentalism and the responsible use of technology for progress. The series was made into this animated film\, and two direct sequels\, Gatchaman II and Gatchaman Fighter. Later\, the franchise grew and spawned into many forms and spin-offs. The TV series was adapted into English and known in North America as Battle of the Planets and G-Force. \nHisayuki Toriumi was a director\, screenwriter and novelist who frequently collaborated with Tatsunoko Productions. He is credited as contributing to several other anime series and two dozen novels. \nTatsuo Yoshida was the anime pioneer who also created and designed Mach Go Go Go (1966)\, better known as the original Speed Racer. He animated numerous other series; Space Ace\, Judo Boy\, Casshern\, Hurricane Polymer\, Tekkaman\, Time Bokan and Yattaman. His production company Tatsunoko\, which he founded with his brothers\, has gone on to create hundreds of titles since 1965 including popular titles\, such as Robotech Macross\, Pretty Rhythm\, \nEnglish dub Trailer\, with Japanese opening song. SUMMARY:Online EdCamp for Japanese Language Teachers
DESCRIPTION:JFT Online EdCamp for Japanese Language Teachers\nThe JFT Online EdCamp for Japanese Language Teachers is a study group where the participants play leading roles. \nDiscussion topics are decided by participants on the spot. Participants are welcome to suggest topics related to any problem they may face in their course of teaching\, or something they want to hear others’ opinions on\, etc. The goal is not to listen to success stories\, but for participants to work together to solve problems. \nExamples of topics previously suggested: \n・ Using the flipped classroom method effectively\n・ Methods to increase the effectiveness of reading aloud\n・ The shift from a grammar-based approach to an action-oriented approach\n・ AI\, Virtual Reality\, and the future of Japanese language education\n・ Marugoto\n・ ICT (Information and Communications Technology)\n・ Teaching kanji in a group\n・ Fun ways to learn elementary kanji\n・ Improving effectiveness when lessons are infrequent (e.g. once a week)\n・ Supporting learners who are weak at speaking or roleplay\n・ Increasing the motivation level of students\n・ Effectively teach students of differing language ability\n・ Fun ways to conduct reading comprehension\n・ Creating reading comprehension lessons for intermediate and advanced learners\n・ Switching from “Minna no Nihongo” to an action-oriented syllabus\n・ Japanese language education for children\n・ Extra-curricular\, cultural club activities \nThe person who suggests the topic will decide what language it will be discussed in. DESCRIPTION:April 25 – July 31\, 2019\nFour Seasons of Gardens in Kyoto: Photographs by Katsuhiko Mizuno\n『四季の京都の庭園』写真　水野克比古\nJapanese culture has been strongly influenced by foreign culture and aesthetics from time to time\, such as Chinese Buddhism  in the ancient period\, Zen Buddhism in medieval times\, Confucian philosophy during the Edo Shogunate\, and European modern civilization in the Meiji period. Japanese gardens were not an exception and experienced constant transfiguration under foreign influence. However\, over the centuries\, although in different forms\, Japanese gardens maintained some kind of continuity. One of the unique characteristics of the Japanese garden is the relationship between man and nature. \nIn describing his own creations of over 40 years\, Kyoto-born photographer Katsuhiko Mizuno has said that nothing in his photos is either purely artificial or purely natural. He always sees someone’s hands or glances behind a tree or a rock in the gardens and captures the aura of timeless spirits with his camera. DESCRIPTION:CHIKYU FILMS  \nThis spring\, we will feature a series of films\, CHIKYU FILMS\, which will share the stories and people who examine the close relationship to our environment\, our earth\, or Chikyu 地球 in Japanese. \n\nTHE HUNT FOR MATSUTAKE\nApril 4\, 6:30 PM & April 17\, 2:00 PM \nDirected by Alejandro Yoshizawa (40 min.) 2011  \nPreceding the film\, we will be screening the short films of the We Heart Canada and Japan 90 Short Film Contest (20 min). There will also be a Q+A and discussion after the film about Matsutake culture and foraging in Japan and Canada. \nThis documentary looks at Japanese-Canadian history and the history of Matsutake hunting. Matsutake – a delicacy in Japanese cuisine – can only be found in the wild\, and is both a commercial and cultural symbol. The film chronicles annual trips into the forests of Canada in search of the elusive and much sought-after mushroom. \n \nI believe there is something unique about these rare\, precious mushrooms. For more than just their earthy aroma\, they are special to many Japanese people in North America\, symbolizing a connection to Japan yet rooted (literally) in Canadian and American soil. This simple Fall tradition flourished before and now alongside the now multi-million dollar matsutake exporting industry. \nBy documenting matsutake hunting\, I hope to learn about our shared history. DESCRIPTION:Edo Hyaku Talk Series\, Part III: HIROSHIGE\, EDO ARTIST\nTalk and slide presentation about the woodblock prints from Hiroshige’s Edo Hyaku\, One Hundred Famous Views of Edo series.\nCoinciding with the exhibition Landmarks From Before It Was Called Tokyo: Hiroshige’s One Hundred Famous Views of Edo \nBy Carol Dorman\, Stuart Jackson Gallery\, Toronto \nAdmission free\, Reservation required \nMonday\, April 8\, 2019\, 6:30-8:00 P.M. \nEdo Hyaku Talk Part III: Hiroshige\, Edo Artist \n \nHiroshige was a son of Edo\, truly one of the most remarkable cities that ever existed.  Edo’s unique culture provided fertile ground for all manner of arts to flourish and for the growth of some of Japan’s most famous artists.   In many ways Hiroshige’s career path was typical for the time until his lyrical and sometimes breathtaking 1833-34 series of The 53 Stations of the Tōkaidō proved to be a best-seller.  That series established him as a master of the genre and he continued to produce popular landscape series through the rest of his career.  He achieved a lasting relevance because of the beauty\, novelty and variety of his compositions\, but also through his choice of subject matter.  More than any other artist of the time\, Hiroshige showed us his world:  the countryside\, the cities\, and their inhabitants.  His monumental Edo Hyaku series is a portrait of the seasons\, the moods\, the variety and the beauty of that city – Hiroshige’s city. \n \nCarol Dorman has been an associate at the Stuart Jackson Gallery\, specializing in antique Japanese prints (ukiyo-e)\, for over 20 years.  Ms. Dorman has lectured on ukiyo-e to various groups in Ontario and Quebec and most recently at the University of Delhi\, India.  She has curated and been involved in print exhibitions at the Japan Foundation\, the Gardiner Museum\, and the Stuart Jackson Gallery and in 2018 she began teaching classes in Japanese art and culture through Ryerson’s Life Institute.  Ms. Dorman became interested in Japanese art at university and began collecting ukiyo-e prints while completing a Master of Arts degree in Sociocultural Anthropology at the University of Toronto.

Jack feels a particular bond with the traditional fables of East Asia\, especially Japan and Korea\, and enjoys sharing folktales from those countries. \nToshiki Mori \nAn actor\, storyteller\, singer and writer. Toshiki was born and raised in Fukushima\, Japan. He started his career as storyteller of Kamishibai  in Toronto and has been actively performing in Montreal and at various schools\, libraries and cultural events throughout Toronto. \nYusuke Tanaka \nA veteran translator\, writer\, director of the Katari Storytelling Festival since 1994. He has been telling stories of the Ainu people\, and his own adaptations of Japanese folklore in many places including New York\, Seoul\, Kyoto\, Tokyo and Sapporo. \nYoko Hyde and Sonoe Howard \nThey are members of Urara\, a Toronto Odori (Japanese dance) group. They have danced together for many years and are Japanese dance enthusiasts. SUMMARY:The Cultural Dimensions of Packaging in Japan
DESCRIPTION:Packaging\, the wrapping of goods and materials\, indeed “wrapping” even in its widest sense\, is integral to human exchange and interaction. There are of course direct functional reasons for both personal and commercial packaging: physical protection; containment or agglomeration; security; information transmission\, or even just for general convenience\, to name but a few. However\, beyond these pragmatic rationales there are important\, often unspoken\, cultural uses for packaging and wrapping\, e.g. a package as package may have an emotional\, or a communicative\, or a symbolic import that is integral to the traditions of a culture. This talk proposes to introduce some of these same elements and their aspects as they inhere in Japanese packaging and wrapping practices. \nDr. Rudi Meyer holds a BFA from NSCAD University\, a BA from McGill University\, an MA from the University of Toronto\, and a PhD from McGill University. He has taught at both McGill and Concordia University\, while keeping up a freelance design practice\, and is now the Director of the Master of Design Program at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD University). He has had a long association with Japan\, having lived there for two years and visiting almost every year since his return to Canada to take up a position at NSCAD. He is keenly interested in Japanese design and has participated in a number of conferences devoted to the topic in Japan. His research interests also include design through use; repair and ad-hoc design as sources of innovation; flexible urban dwellings. In addition to studio courses he teaches design history and theory. \nReservations are now closed. Thank you for your interest. DESCRIPTION:JFT Online EdCamp for Japanese Language Teachers\nThe JFT Online EdCamp for Japanese Language Teachers is a study group where the participants play leading roles. \nDiscussion topics are decided on by participants on the spot. Participants are welcome to suggest topics related to any problems they may have or something they want to hear others’ opinions on\, etc. The goal is not to listen success stories\, but for participants to work together to solve problems. \nExamples of topics previously requested (in Japanese) are:\n\n「【学習障害？】習ったことを覚えてくれない学習者。質問しても、グループで練習しても間違いばかり。同じレベルのクラス(初級)を何度も受講したがります」\n「宿題をどのようにチェックするか。」\n「「質問づくり」を取り入れた授業の進め方」\n「休み時間に学生が話す日本語以外の言語について」\n「AIと日本語教育が今後どのようにかかわっていくのか」\n「週１回（６０〜９０分程度）の頻度の低いレッスンを効果的に進める方法」\n「フォトロゲ」\n「時間管理について」\n「日本語教育におけるICT活用について」\n「まるごと」\n「働き方、待遇」\n\nWhoever suggests the topic decides what language it will be discussed in. SUMMARY:Secrets of the Smithsonian Samurai: Rediscovering the Lost ‘Living Dolls’ of Japan
DESCRIPTION:The 1893 Chicago World’s Fair was a global spectacle unlike anything the world had ever seen. To showcase its history and culture at the Fair\, Japan sent a myriad of arts\, crafts\, and other treasures. Among these were eight iki ningyō (生人形) or ‘living dolls’ – lifelike mannequins that depict a unique Japanese aesthetic – including an intriguing samurai set piece. The Smithsonian purchased these mannequins upon the Fair’s completion and later exhibited them intermittently at the US National Museum. After being removed from display\, however\, these enigmatic mannequins disappeared and were presumed lost for decades. \nIn this talk\, Dr. Robert Pontsioen of the Smithsonian Institution traces his recent rediscovery of these artifacts\, and explores their place in the artistic and cultural milieu of late 19th century Japan and America. Through collaboration with traditional artisans in Japan\, Dr. Pontsioen describes how we can both increase our understanding of museum collections and reunite source communities with treasured objects from their past. \nRobert Pontsioen is a Researcher in the Asian Cultural History Program at the National Museum of Natural History\, Smithsonian Institution. A Japan Foundation Fellowship recipient in 2016- 2017\, his research involves extensive fieldwork among artisan communities\, and centers on Japanese and other Asian material culture with a focus on traditional arts and crafts\, the reproduction of craft skills\, and strategies for cultural heritage promotion and preservation. The co-author of four books\, his recent publications include “The Alexander Graham Bell Collection of Japanese Masks at the Smithsonian” (Nineteenth Century Art Worldwide\, Vol. 17\, 2018)\, in which he describes and interprets seven unique and evocative masks collected in Japan by the famed inventor. \n  \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:This class is targeted towards intermediate-level Japanese learners and will cover the “Climbing Mount Fuji” topic from Marugoto: Japanese Language and Culture Intermediate 2 (B1). \nUsing various materials\, students will work towards the expansion of vocabulary and grammatical accuracy and fluency in spoken and written Japanese. This class will also look at communication strategies as well as the socio-cultural aspects of the language. \nBy the end of this particular class\, students will be able to: \n\nlisten to a talk about a trip and understand the features of the area and the travel advice.\ngive one’s opinion\, listen to one’s friend’s opinion and make adjustments to plans in order to plan a trip.\ndescribe\, for example\, features\, highlights and things you have of be careful of\, with a certain level of detail when talking about sightseeing areas in one’s own country.\nread a sightseeing guide in a guidebook and understand the features of an area and\, for example\, what kinds of things you can do there.\nwrite an e-mail to a friend introducing a sightseeing area in one’s country with a certain level of detail.\n\nClass Schedule and Fees\nThis is a 6-lesson class running from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm on the following Saturday afternoons: \nJanuary 19\, February 2\, February 16\, March 2\, March 16\, March 30\n* As each class builds on the one before it\, we ask that you attend all classes. \nThe cost of one class (6 lessons) is $150\, and the fees are due on the first day of class (cash or cheque only). DESCRIPTION:January 18 – April 13\, 2019\n\nLandmarks From Before It Was Called Tokyo:\nHiroshige’s One Hundred Famous Views of Edo\n広重作江戸名所百景展\nCo-presented by Stuart Jackson Gallery & The Japan Foundation\, Toronto\n  \nOriginal print works of One Hundred Famous Views of Edo\, for short “Edo Hyaku (hundred)”\, by Hiroshige (1797-1858) for your view\, together with related works\, and contemporary hand-carved\, hand-printed reproductions to bring back the excitement and ambience of sophisticated urban life in Edo.  \n*UPDATE: Feb 6\, 2019  – Snow storm brought additional snow scenes to Hiroshige’s One Hundred Famous Views of Edo exhibition. See bottom for details.\n“Edo Hyaku” of Urban Serenity \nOne Hundred Famous Views of Edo\, for short “Edo Hyaku (hundred)” by Hiroshige is a series of multi-coloured woodblock prints depicting the landmarks of Tokyo at the time the city was called Edo. \nHiroshige (1797-1858) was an ukiyo-e artist whose reputation was most strongly established in the genre of topographical prints. This direction towards landmark themes came to Hiroshige\, a late bloomer\, in 1831 when his artistic breakthrough\, Tōto Meisho or Famous Views of the Eastern Capital (Edo) print series was published. In 1833 Hiroshige’s popularity exploded when his series 53 Stations of Tōkaidō Highway appeared. \nAcross Japan many famous views became the subjects of Hiroshige’s print series\, but the city of Edo had a special place in his artistry. In volume alone\, Hiroshige created more than one thousand prints of the landscapes of Edo. Among all these books and prints of Edo by Hiroshige\, “Edo Hyaku” occupies an even more privileged position. \n \n“Edo Hyaku” is a summit of Hiroshige’s famous view prints. He himself had previously created many series of famous views\, as though they were the foothills supporting this magnificent peak. In “Edo Hyaku”\, which was created during the last two-and-a half years of Hiroshige’s life\, the artist made one last creative leap: Unlike his travelogue prints which had sense of humour and vitality\, the urban scenes in “Edo Hyaku” embrace poetic stillness and serenity along with new dramatic elements of composition. \nContemporary researchers say that “Edo Hyaku” had an intention of providing emotional relief from the disasters of that time — the Great Ansei Earthquake in 1855 and the Great Wind Storm in 1856. Hiroshige encouraged the citizens\, celebrated the recovery and restoration\, and mourned for the victims through his artworks. Having the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in a country deeply hurt by an earthquake in 2011\, Hiroshige’s generous\, affectionate glance to the city and its residents is more touching than ever. \nOriginal works from “Edo Hyaku”\, related works\, and contemporary hand-carved\, hand-printed reproductions bring back the excitement and ambience of sophisticated urban life in Edo. Nature and the seasons along with man-made structures were fully appreciated by Edo residents who made up a population of more than a million individuals. \nHiroshige’s farewell poem\n  \nAzumaji e Fude wo nokoshite Tabi no Sora \nNishi no Mikuni no Nadokoro wo min. \nI leave my brush in the East \nAnd set forth on my journey. \nI shall see the famous places \nin the Western Land. \n  \n(The Western Land in this context refers to the strip of land by the Tōkaidō between Kyoto and Edo\, \nbut it does double duty as a reference to the paradise of the Amida Buddha.) \n  \n*Just added February 6 \n \nNight View in Takanawa \nfrom Eight Snow Views of Eastern Capital series \nThis series of eight snow scenes had never been published in Hiroshige’s life time\, only the sketch remained Paris\, France. These works are considered as Hiroshige’s latest work\, at a same time with One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. First in 1928 the blocks were carved and printed. SUMMARY:KORE-EDA + KIKI: After Life
DESCRIPTION:KORE-EDA + KIKI \nThis series celebrates the accomplishments of master filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda and also the prolific actress Kirin Kiki who sadly passed away in September. We will be screening three films by Kore-eda – two of which includes Kirin Kiki in the cast. Kiki was a frequent collaborator in his films\, including Shoplifters\, her last film\, which won Kore-eda the prestigious Palme D’Or at Cannes earlier this year. \n \nAFTER LIFE ワンダフルライフ\nDecember 18\, 2018 6:30 PM  \nDirected by Hirokazu Kore-eda [1998] 118 min. \nIn this acclaimed Japanese film\, a group of people who have recently died find themselves in a limbo realm resembling a relatively mundane building. Counselors\, including Takashi (Arata) and Shiori (Erika Oda)\, are on hand to help new arrivals pick one memory from their lives to bring with them into eternity.
