The film was released at the same time in Tokyo and the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London\, making a simultaneous premiere in Japan and England. Music is by James Iha. \nCollege student Haru (Hikari Mitsushima) is stuck in an unfulfilling relationship with a boyfriend that’s just not right for her. One day\, Rico (Eriko Nakamura)\, a “medical artist” who makes prosthetic body parts\, strikes up a conversation with her. Rico believes that gender has nothing to do with love. The two quickly become intimately involved… \nThis is the first film directed by Momoko Ando\, who is the daughter of actor-turned-director Eiji Okuda and actress Kaz Ando. DESCRIPTION:  \nMasks Onstage: \nNoh Theatre Photography Exhibition\nPresented by The Japan Foundation\, Toronto \nIn association with the Yokohama Noh Theatre \nPhotography Yoshiaki Kanda \n能面舞台写真展\n主催: 国際交流基金トロント日本文化センター\n協力: 横浜能楽堂\n写真撮影: 神田佳明\nMasks are one of the most characteristic elements of Noh Theatre. Designated as Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO\, commonly called World Heritage\, in 2001\, Noh Theatre has been developing and maintaining an elaborate theatre form since its establishment in the 14th century. The unique use of masks in Noh results not only in physical changes in the facial appearance of the actor\, but also an actual change in the reality of the whole fiction\, which can be much larger than life and profoundly spiritual. \n \nIn far more than half of the Noh plays the main characters are ghosts. Gods and goddesses are conjured on stage not as deus ex machina\, but as the main characters. Spirits of plants and animals can be the leads. A large portion of the stories is based on the great classic literature\, such as The Tale of Genji and The Tale of Ise\, and epic legends of warlord samurai. The Noh masks connect us to the mythical world and we can embrace the reality of the magic and grandeur of these god-like characters. \nThe masks are surprisingly small\, not completely covering the actors’ faces. The masks are placed high on the actor’s face\, towards the forehead\, like a symbol of the character. The performer’s view through the eyeholes is so limited that actors can only mark their own positions by viewing the four pillars at the corners of the stage. These facts can make the Noh masks seem dysfunctional\, but these are all a result of the mask’s function being to build a myth for whole theatre rather than only assisting the wearer to be in character. \nAt a first quick look\, the masks seem motionless: However\, on stage subtle changes in the angle of the mask can suggest a range of emotions\, such as anger\, joy\, and sadness. In this exhibition\, the stage photo and the close-up of the mask are paired. SUMMARY:Coffee Life & Work in Japan
DESCRIPTION:Coffee has been a beverage of significance in Japan since it was first brought to Japan by Portuguese and Dutch traders in the 17th century. It configured social and personal spaces from the late 19th century\, well before the current boom in specialty coffee. These cafes and kissaten witness social change and change in taste and culture; their histories reflect Japan’s own\, and global transformations as well. One such change is in the nature of work\, the work lives of customers as well as work in cafes and in coffee itself. \nThis talk also reflects on the writing of the book\, Coffee Life in Japan\, changes since it was written\, and the June 2018 publication of the Japanese language edition of the work. \nA coffee tasting\, courtesy of Hatch Coffee\, will take place before the event at 6:00pm. \n \nRegistration is now closed. We thank everyone for their interest. Rush seating MAY be available on the day of the event. \n\nMerry White received her A.B. in Anthropology\, A.M. in Comparative Literature\, and PhD in Sociology from Harvard University where she also taught and administered programs in education and East Asian Studies. In 1987 she began teaching at Boston University in the Department of Anthropology. She has also been a food professional and journalist. Her research areas include family and social policy\, education and food anthropology. Her books include studies of Japanese families\, of Japanese adolescents and of Japan’s schools. Helping to establish a coffee growing cooperative in Northeast Cambodia\, she also helped export beans to Japan\, and to create conduits for charitable giving related to this project. Recently\, she co-curated an exhibition of Japanese cooking utensils\, “Objects of Use and Beauty: Japanese Culinary Tools\,” at the Fuller Craft Museum near Boston.

DESCRIPTION:JFT Online EdCamp for Japanese Language Teachers\nThe JFT Online EdCamp for Japanese Language Teachers is a study group where the participants play leading roles. \nDiscussion topics are decided on by participants on the spot. Participants are welcome to suggest topics related to any problems they may have or something they want to hear others’ opinions on\, etc. The goal is not to listen success stories\, but for participants to work together to solve problems. \nExamples of topics currently requested are:\n● Efficient kanji teaching methods for Chinese students\n● What do you do if students cannot remember hiragana or katakana at all?\n● Recruitment and retention\n● Separating kanji-ken and non-kanji-ken students\n● Examples of the Communicative Approach\, etc. \nWhoever suggests the topic decides what language it will be discussed in. World War II with its destructive air raids marks the boundary between these two groups of photographs. Tokyo has gone through so many pivotal incidents in its urban history. The Meiji Restoration in 1868 and the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 transformed the city from Edo to Tokyo. Post-war recovery and reconstruction were celebrated with the Tokyo Olympic Games in 1964. The even higher fever of the Bubble economy and its sudden burst transformed the city again at the tail end of the 20th century. What will the upcoming Olympic Games in 2020 do to the city? We all wonder. \nRiding Metro is a time-slipping story. Jiro\, a lingerie salesman\, steps out of a subway station\, finding himself in the neighbourhood of 1964\, which is the site of his older brother’s mysterious death by a yet-to-be traffic accident. The excitement of the Olympic Games fills the street\, and Jiro puts in hopeless efforts to prevent the accident. \nThe Metro also takes Jiro and his girlfriend to the post-war black market where Jiro’s father started his business from scratch. While the father is critically ill\, the subway takes Jiro to different time slots of the past to confront a young man who will eventually be Jiro’s father. Jiro discovers the inevitable destiny of his family\, both sad and cruel. The Metro is not only a time machine\, but also works as a tool of self-discovery by contrasting the Before/After of the pivotal social changes.

In the contemporary section of the exhibition\, two photographers\, Daidō Moriyama and Nobuyoshi Araki\, are featured as the leading giants of post-war photography in Japan. \nSentmental Journey in 1971 marked Nobuyoshi Araki’s first success in photographic publication\, which depicted his own honeymoon trip with his beloved Yōko. In 1990 Yōko passed away\, but she kept writing essays up to her death. These essays along with Araki’s photographic diary were published on the anniversary of her death in 1991 as Tokyo Biyori (Weather). \nIn the book Yōko and Araki walk around Tokyo in the fine weather and their affection and thoughts overlap the urban street scene images. Director/actor Naoto Takenaka read the entire book while standing in a bookstore\, and it caused him to weep deeply. On the spot Takenaka determined to make this book into a film. \nThe cityscape of Tokyo is one of the extra characters in the film. Even the apartment of the Arakis\, and its view from its terrace\, works as a profound background for this most romantic\, unique love relationship. \n

SUMMARY:A Friend In Deed: Lu Xun\, Uchiyama Kanzō\, and the Intellectual World of Shanghai on the Eve of War
DESCRIPTION:Lu Xun (魯迅)\, 20th-century China’s most famous writer\, spent the last nine years of his life in Shanghai (1927-1936). An avid reader of Japanese from his school years there at the start of the century\, he soon befriended Uchiyama Kanzō (内山完造)\, owner of the largest Japanese bookstore in the city. Lu visited the store almost every day\, and in times when Lu Xun’s life was in danger\, Uchiyama protected him in numerous ways. This talk will discuss how the two men ended up in Shanghai\, how their friendship was forged\, and how they came to have such extraordinary mutual respect. There will also be musings on the meaning of genuine friendship in difficult times. \n\nJoshua Fogel was born in Brooklyn\, NY\, and raised in Berkeley\, CA. He earned a B.A. at the University of Chicago\, and an M.A. and Ph.D. at Columbia University. He has taught at Harvard University\, the University of California\, Santa Barbara\, and York University\, with visiting professorships at Kyoto University\, Kansai University\, and the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton). His work primarily concerns the cultural and political interactions between China and Japan in recent centuries.

World War II with its destructive air raids marks the boundary between these two groups of photographs. Tokyo has gone through so many pivotal incidents in its urban history. The Meiji Restoration in 1868 followed by the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 transformed the city from Edo to Tokyo. Post-war recovery and reconstruction were celebrated with the Tokyo Olympic Games in 1964. Both the even higher fever of the Bubble economy and its sudden burst transformed the city again at the tail end of the 20th century. What will the upcoming Olympic Games in 2020 do to the city? We all wonder. \n  \nALWAYS\, Sunset on Third Street was such a big hit film in 2005 that a sequel was produced immediately by popular demand. In 2012 Part 3 was added to complete a trilogy of films describing the downtown life of Tokyo in 1958\, 1959\, and 1964. Symbolically standing in the middle of the stories\, the Tokyo Tower\, first in construction\, and then in full function in the television industry\, is a strong unifying image. This heartwarming neighbourhood comedy reminds us that social and cultural changes ALWAYS involve living people who struggle and survive thorough those challenging times. Going through the drama of dealing with changes and progress\, the same individuals who witnessed the events of Before remain in the new world of After to testify about the past. Now they are making a new print inspired from a cult hit game Shadow of the Colossus. \nUkiyo-e: The traditional art form known worldwide as the “Face of Japan” has over several hundred years inspired Van Gogh\, Monet and Picasso to create their masterpieces. Post-war recovery and reconstruction were celebrated with the Tokyo Olympic Games in 1964. Both the even higher fever of the Bubble economy and its sudden burst transformed the city again at the tail end of the 20th century. What will the upcoming Olympic Games in 2020 do to the city? We all wonder. \n  \nALWAYS\, Sunset on Third Street was such a big hit film in 2005 that a sequel was produced immediately by popular demand. In 2012 Part 3 was added to complete a trilogy of films describing the downtown life of Tokyo in 1958\, 1959\, and 1964. Symbolically standing in the middle of the stories\, the Tokyo Tower\, first in construction\, and then in full function in the television industry\, is a strong unifying image. This heartwarming neighbourhood comedy reminds us that social and cultural changes ALWAYS involve living people who struggle and survive thorough those challenging times. Going through the drama of dealing with changes and progress\, the same individuals who witnessed the events of Before remain in the new world of After to testify about the past. With every lead comes more questions. The culprits? Beloved robotic companions programmed to obey. With his mostly human partner Togusa in tow\, Batou is assigned to investigate what his superiors see as a possible terrorist threat. Through coming in contact with robots of all shapes and purposes\, he begins to question his very existence. As they delve deeper into the opaque recesses of their society\, Batou’s consciousness itself is hacked and his grip on reality becomes increasingly tenuous.
