An avid reader of Japanese from his school years there at the start of the century\, he soon befriended Uchiyama Kanzō (内山完造)\, owner of the largest Japanese bookstore in the city. Lu visited the store almost every day\, and in times when Lu Xun’s life was in danger\, Uchiyama protected him in numerous ways. This talk will discuss how the two men ended up in Shanghai\, how their friendship was forged\, and how they came to have such extraordinary mutual respect. There will also be musings on the meaning of genuine friendship in difficult times. \n\nJoshua Fogel was born in Brooklyn\, NY\, and raised in Berkeley\, CA. He earned a B.A. at the University of Chicago\, and an M.A. and Ph.D. at Columbia University. World War II with its destructive air raids marks the boundary between these two groups of photographs. Tokyo has gone through so many pivotal incidents in its urban history. The Meiji Restoration in 1868 followed by the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 transformed the city from Edo to Tokyo. Post-war recovery and reconstruction were celebrated with the Tokyo Olympic Games in 1964. Both the even higher fever of the Bubble economy and its sudden burst transformed the city again at the tail end of the 20th century. What will the upcoming Olympic Games in 2020 do to the city? We all wonder. \n  \nALWAYS\, Sunset on Third Street was such a big hit film in 2005 that a sequel was produced immediately by popular demand. In 2012 Part 3 was added to complete a trilogy of films describing the downtown life of Tokyo in 1958\, 1959\, and 1964. Symbolically standing in the middle of the stories\, the Tokyo Tower\, first in construction\, and then in full function in the television industry\, is a strong unifying image. This heartwarming neighbourhood comedy reminds us that social and cultural changes ALWAYS involve living people who struggle and survive thorough those challenging times. Going through the drama of dealing with changes and progress\, the same individuals who witnessed the events of Before remain in the new world of After to testify about the past. Both the even higher fever of the Bubble economy and its sudden burst transformed the city again at the tail end of the 20th century. What will the upcoming Olympic Games in 2020 do to the city? We all wonder. \n  \nALWAYS\, Sunset on Third Street was such a big hit film in 2005 that a sequel was produced immediately by popular demand. In 2012 Part 3 was added to complete a trilogy of films describing the downtown life of Tokyo in 1958\, 1959\, and 1964. Symbolically standing in the middle of the stories\, the Tokyo Tower\, first in construction\, and then in full function in the television industry\, is a strong unifying image. This heartwarming neighbourhood comedy reminds us that social and cultural changes ALWAYS involve living people who struggle and survive thorough those challenging times. The historical works shot in Tokyo in the 1930s to 1940s are displayed in contrast with contemporary pieces created after 2010. \nBefore World War II\, the city of Tokyo in the 1930s and 1940s was about to complete the urban structural framework as a contemporary metropolis. Photographers took expressive advantage of the high technical level of their medium in order to fix the images of a vibrant\, urban space\, where the traditional and the modern co-existed and clashed at the same time. \n\nNobuyoshi Araki\, Tombeau Tokyo (2016/2017)\nIn contrast\, after 2010 Tokyo enfolds the fluid social condition of the era after the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake and is experiencing even greater transformation\, aiming towards the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020. Rapid digitalization of the photographic method influences the characteristics of photographic expression; thus\, the individuality and viewpoint of each artist are more clearly visible than ever. \nIn comparing the two groups of photography from these different eras\, the figures of Tokyo in the past\, present\, and future are distinctively intensifying. Tokyo is drawing international attention in the light of the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020. With a traditional kata sword demonstration from the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre’s Mu Mon Kai Iaido Club performed before the film\, this screening promises to mesmerize on screen and off. \nBadass babe Meiko Kaji is Yuki\, a trained assassin out to avenge the rape of her mother. Born in a prison and with her mother dying in childbirth\, Yuki is trained by a priest in the art of vengeance by way of impressive sword skills. Setting out to assassinate the three men who violated her mother (any one of them being her father) and murdered her mother’s husband\, Yuki hunts them down one-by-one\, utilizing her expert training. Amidst the red spotted-snow of Japan\, LADY SNOWBLOOD is a stunning work of film artistry. Even when hyperbolic bloodshed reigns\, it never loses its nuanced sophistication. \nKaji\, as Yuki—in a role adapted specially for her from Kazuo Koike’s popular manga—is astounding. Un-sexualized\, and completely in control\, her performance is legendary and set the gold standard for determined\, demagogue manslayers. A popular songstress in Japan\, she also sang several of the songs featured in the film\, including “Shura no Hana” (aka “Flowers of Carnage”)\, which Tarantino used to great effect in KILL BILL: VOL.
