The tower stands at 135 metres in height and is at the northeast corner of Yonge and Bloor Streets. The International Style office skyscraper was designed by architects Crang & Boake in 1973. The Japan Foundation Toronto established its office and cultural centre in the Colonnade in 1995 and was designed by international and Canadian design icon Yabu Pushelberg. In 2015\, the office moved to the current location and was designed by the global firm Interior Architects. The inspiration of the modern interior can be traced to design elements of traditional Japanese interiors.

World War II with its destructive air raids marks the boundary between these two groups of photographs. Tokyo has gone through so many pivotal incidents in its urban history. The Meiji Restoration in 1868 followed by the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 transformed the city from Edo to Tokyo. Post-war recovery and reconstruction were celebrated with the Tokyo Olympic Games in 1964. Both the even higher fever of the Bubble economy and its sudden burst transformed the city again at the tail end of the 20th century. What will the upcoming Olympic Games in 2020 do to the city? We all wonder. \n  \nALWAYS\, Sunset on Third Street was such a big hit film in 2005 that a sequel was produced immediately by popular demand. In 2012 Part 3 was added to complete a trilogy of films describing the downtown life of Tokyo in 1958\, 1959\, and 1964. Symbolically standing in the middle of the stories\, the Tokyo Tower\, first in construction\, and then in full function in the television industry\, is a strong unifying image. This heartwarming neighbourhood comedy reminds us that social and cultural changes ALWAYS involve living people who struggle and survive thorough those challenging times. Going through the drama of dealing with changes and progress\, the same individuals who witnessed the events of Before remain in the new world of After to testify about the past. With every lead comes more questions. The culprits? Beloved robotic companions programmed to obey. With his mostly human partner Togusa in tow\, Batou is assigned to investigate what his superiors see as a possible terrorist threat. Through coming in contact with robots of all shapes and purposes\, he begins to question his very existence. Both the even higher fever of the Bubble economy and its sudden burst transformed the city again at the tail end of the 20th century. What will the upcoming Olympic Games in 2020 do to the city? This film portrays with sensitivity\, the emotions of a woman who runs a dressmaking shop and the people who love her clothes.\nIchie (Nakatani Miki) runs a dressmaking boutique\, and her focus is refashioning clothes made by her grandmother\, who founded the shop\, along with creating a few new pieces of her own. She’s been turning down proposals from a department store to develop her own brand\, but salesman Fujii (Miura Takahiro) sways her with a single comment.\n\n\n\nDirector Yukiko Mishima is one of the directors on the forefront of films coming out of Japan. Some of her other films include; Dear Etranger\, A Night’s Tight Rope\, Bread of Happiness\, A Drop of the Grapevine and Shisei. Her film Dear Etranger was the opening film of the 2017 Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival. Currently she is working on the film Memory of Antique Books\, based on the novel by En Mikami\, scheduled to be released in November 2018.

The films screenwriters Matsutaro Kawaguchi and Yoshikata Yoda wove together two stories from Akinari Uede‘s best-known work\, Ugetsu Monogatari (Tales of Moonlight and Rain\, 1776) and French writer Guy de Maupassant‘s Decore! \, 1883. The two stories from Ugetsu Monogatari\, The House in the Thicket and The Lust of the White Serpent (Asaji ga Yado and Jasei no In) are part of a collection of supernatural tales\, which are largely taken from traditional Japanese and Chinese ghost stories. \nBy the time he made Ugetsu\, Kenji Mizoguchi was already an elder statesman of Japanese cinema\, fiercely revered by Akira Kurosawa and other directors of a younger generation. And with this exquisite ghost story\, a fatalistic wartime tragedy\, he created a touchstone of his art\, his long takes and sweeping camera guiding the viewer through a delirious narrative about two villagers whose pursuit of fame and fortune leads them far astray from their loyal wives. Moving between the terrestrial and the otherworldly\, Ugetsu reveals essential truths about the ravages of war\, the plight of women\, and the pride of men. \nThe film stars Machiko Kyō\, Mitsuko Mito\, Kinuyo Tanaka\, Masayuki Mori\, and Ei Ozawa. The location is in Iwaki-city\, Fukushima Prefecture\, where there was the biggest coal mine on the main island of Japan. In order to save the town\, which is ailing as a result of large-scale reductions at the coal mine\, a project is launched to build a Hawaiian-style paradise in this northern town. The film is based on a true story about the people who supported the construction of the leisure facility\, “Joban Hawaiian Center”.\nA high school girl\, Kimiko (Aoi Yu)\, lives with her brother and her mother who works at the coal mine. Kimiko applies for a post as a Hawaiian Dancer despite fierce opposition from her mother. A former star dancer\, Madoka (Matsuyuki Yasuko)\, is brought in from Tokyo as a dance teacher. She ridicules the coal mine and the unsophisticated girls at first\, however\, the girls’ single-minded devotion gradually rekindles her almost forgotten passion. The girls continue with their rigorous and intensive training despite the harsh realities each girl is faced with\, and the day of the opening finally arrives.\nDirected by Lee Sang-il of Scrap Heaven. The historical works shot in Tokyo in the 1930s to 1940s are displayed in contrast with contemporary pieces created after 2010. \nBefore World War II\, the city of Tokyo in the 1930s and 1940s was about to complete the urban structural framework as a contemporary metropolis. Photographers took expressive advantage of the high technical level of their medium in order to fix the images of a vibrant\, urban space\, where the traditional and the modern co-existed and clashed at the same time. \n\nNobuyoshi Araki\, Tombeau Tokyo (2016/2017)\nIn contrast\, after 2010 Tokyo enfolds the fluid social condition of the era after the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake and is experiencing even greater transformation\, aiming towards the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020. Rapid digitalization of the photographic method influences the characteristics of photographic expression; thus\, the individuality and viewpoint of each artist are more clearly visible than ever. \nIn comparing the two groups of photography from these different eras\, the figures of Tokyo in the past\, present\, and future are distinctively intensifying. Tokyo is drawing international attention in the light of the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020. This sincere\, humanistic drama takes a scalpel to the timely theme of rural medical treatment against a beautiful pastoral backdrop. Rakugo storyteller Tsurube Shofukutei\, who has branched out into acting in recent years\, gives a highly empathetic performance in his first lead role\, as a doctor beloved by the village residents he treats. A small mountain village. Its sole and beloved doctor Ino (Shofukutei) suddenly vanises. An investigation gets underway but nobody\, including medical intern Keisuke Soma (Eita) who had arrived in town two months prior\, has any idea of Ino’s true identity. Just before disappearing\, Dr. Ino had examined a widow named Kazuko (Kaoru Yachigusa). SUMMARY:Artist's Talk by Takahiro Kondo
DESCRIPTION:  \nTakahiro KONDŌ\nCeramic Artist \n \nThroughout his career\, Takahiro KONDŌ has striven to determine his own independent artistic identity through extensive experimentation. Born in Kyoto into a family celebrated for its traditional sometsuke (cobalt blue-and-white porcelain)\, he first began working with the challenging medium of porcelain and it has remained his principal material. As a young man he was a competitive sportsman\, becoming a champion in table tennis and traveling abroad for competitions. Despite his exposure to clay at an early age\, he did not seriously consider pursuing a career related to his family’s art until he was in his twenties. \n  \nKONDŌ’s early work followed the sometsuke tradition mastered by his grandfather and father and\, like them\, he was highly influenced by the work and writings of Tomimoto Kenkichi (1886-1963)\, who stressed the importance of balancing technique with originality. He quickly developed his own style and began to incorporate other media into his work\, starting with metal then adding cast glass. This early experimentation resulted in his unique and highly distinctive “silver mist” (gintekisai) glaze\, which is an amalgam of platinum\, gold\, silver and glass frit that ranges in appearance from a subtle shimmer to a stream of molten drops that cling and pool over the porcelain surfaces. \n  \nWater has been his principal theme for many years and he has explored not only its physical forms such as rain\, ice\, steam\, and mist\, but also its conceptual aspects as a source of life\, purifier\, natural resource\, and\, most currently\, as a critical environmental issue in regards to the nuclear disaster in Fukushima. KONDŌ was deeply affected by the natural disasters that befell Japan in 2011 and has incorporated his thoughts and feelings on the subject into most of his work since then. There is no sightseeing spot on the island and people come here to “twilight”. \n \n  \nTaeko stays at “Hamada”\, which is run by Yuji (Mitsuishi Ken) who carries on at his own speed almost to a fault. People of distinctive character seem to gather at “Hamada”\, including Sakura (Motai Masako)\, a mysterious woman who every year comes from somewhere in the early spring\, and a high school teacher\, Haruna (Ichikawa Mikako)\, who drops by every day. \n \n  \nThere is also this intriguing exercise\, Merci taiso\, which the residents on the island do as part of their daily routine but only during the spring. \n  \nTaeko is bewildered with the life on the island which is completely out the norm for her\, but as she spends more time\, she begins to blend in with the slow pace on the island. The film portrays the main character who is tired of urban life but begins to look at herself through interaction with people on her trip. \nFilms also directed by Naoko Ogigami include Close Knit\, Rent-A-Cat\, Toilet\, Kamome Diner\, Go Go Haiku Girl and Yoshino’s Barber. \n  \nTo learn about other films in the DIRECTED BY JAPANESE WOMEN series\, click here > \n

The film is a beautiful drama about an encounter between two lost and wounded souls. Misako (Ayame Misaki) is able to capture the beauty of cinema through her words\, and shares this special gift by writing concise audio descriptions of films for the visually impaired. \nThe photographer Nakamori (Masatoshi Nagase) is going through a difficult point in life as he gradually loses his sight. The two are brought together as Misako’s cinematic poetry helps to shine light through the film and slowly win the hearts of the two main characters. \nRadiance was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 2017 Cannes. Since moving to Toronto from Tokyo in 1994\, Noriko has added Nia dance exercise to her repertoire. She performs regularly at schools\, libraries\, festivals\, and at various other events. \nNathalie Vachon A writer/storyteller and painter whose work is described as whimsical\, magical and heartwarming. She lived in Osaka for a year and a half and loves to share\, hear stories and travel back into memories of Japan and Asia. \nRui Umezawa A Toronto writer and storyteller. His novel The Truth About Death and Dying was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Book Prize for Best First Book. His past participation in Katari inspired his most recent publication\, Strange Light Afar: Tales of the Supernatural from Old Japan. \nAisha Masaoka Aisha is excited to have the opportunity to perform with the Katari Storytellers again. She is a graduate of Humber College’s Theatre Performance Program. After a natural medicine workshop\, he goes to the Okinawa Islands to visit the area. There he met Junko (Youki Kudoh)\, a 40-year old mother who left her abusive husband after a heated argument. A new and unexpected relationship develops between them\, and together\, they roam the islands in search of tranquility. Junko’s presence disturbs Pierre’s quest for peace and tranquility\, but he can not push her away.  Where will this adventure take them? \nThe film is a Canada Japan co-production and set entirely in Okinawa. It was the winner of two awards at the 36th Montreal World Film Festival in 2012.
