DESCRIPTION:  \nTakahiro KONDŌ\nCeramic Artist \n \nThroughout his career\, Takahiro KONDŌ has striven to determine his own independent artistic identity through extensive experimentation. Born in Kyoto into a family celebrated for its traditional sometsuke (cobalt blue-and-white porcelain)\, he first began working with the challenging medium of porcelain and it has remained his principal material. As a young man he was a competitive sportsman\, becoming a champion in table tennis and traveling abroad for competitions. Despite his exposure to clay at an early age\, he did not seriously consider pursuing a career related to his family’s art until he was in his twenties. \n  \nKONDŌ’s early work followed the sometsuke tradition mastered by his grandfather and father and\, like them\, he was highly influenced by the work and writings of Tomimoto Kenkichi (1886-1963)\, who stressed the importance of balancing technique with originality. He quickly developed his own style and began to incorporate other media into his work\, starting with metal then adding cast glass. This early experimentation resulted in his unique and highly distinctive “silver mist” (gintekisai) glaze\, which is an amalgam of platinum\, gold\, silver and glass frit that ranges in appearance from a subtle shimmer to a stream of molten drops that cling and pool over the porcelain surfaces. \n  \nWater has been his principal theme for many years and he has explored not only its physical forms such as rain\, ice\, steam\, and mist\, but also its conceptual aspects as a source of life\, purifier\, natural resource\, and\, most currently\, as a critical environmental issue in regards to the nuclear disaster in Fukushima. KONDŌ was deeply affected by the natural disasters that befell Japan in 2011 and has incorporated his thoughts and feelings on the subject into most of his work since then. There is no sightseeing spot on the island and people come here to “twilight”. \n \n  \nTaeko stays at “Hamada”\, which is run by Yuji (Mitsuishi Ken) who carries on at his own speed almost to a fault. People of distinctive character seem to gather at “Hamada”\, including Sakura (Motai Masako)\, a mysterious woman who every year comes from somewhere in the early spring\, and a high school teacher\, Haruna (Ichikawa Mikako)\, who drops by every day. \n \n  \nThere is also this intriguing exercise\, Merci taiso\, which the residents on the island do as part of their daily routine but only during the spring. \n  \nTaeko is bewildered with the life on the island which is completely out the norm for her\, but as she spends more time\, she begins to blend in with the slow pace on the island. The film portrays the main character who is tired of urban life but begins to look at herself through interaction with people on her trip. \nFilms also directed by Naoko Ogigami include Close Knit\, Rent-A-Cat\, Toilet\, Kamome Diner\, Go Go Haiku Girl and Yoshino’s Barber. \n  \nTo learn about other films in the DIRECTED BY JAPANESE WOMEN series\, click here > \n

DESCRIPTION:RADIANCE 光\nThursday March 8th\, 2018 6:30 PM\n   \nDirected by Naomi Kawase\, 2017\n101 minutes\, Japanese with English subtitles\nMarch 8th is international women’s day and March is also Women’s history month\, and what better way to celebrate this than watching films made by Japanese women. Radiance is the first film to be featured in this series of four films by pre-eminent female filmmakers from Japan. \nRadiance is the stunning new film by director Naomi Kawase. The film is a beautiful drama about an encounter between two lost and wounded souls. Misako (Ayame Misaki) is able to capture the beauty of cinema through her words\, and shares this special gift by writing concise audio descriptions of films for the visually impaired. \nThe photographer Nakamori (Masatoshi Nagase) is going through a difficult point in life as he gradually loses his sight. The two are brought together as Misako’s cinematic poetry helps to shine light through the film and slowly win the hearts of the two main characters. \nRadiance was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 2017 Cannes. Since moving to Toronto from Tokyo in 1994\, Noriko has added Nia dance exercise to her repertoire. She performs regularly at schools\, libraries\, festivals\, and at various other events. \nNathalie Vachon A writer/storyteller and painter whose work is described as whimsical\, magical and heartwarming. She lived in Osaka for a year and a half and loves to share\, hear stories and travel back into memories of Japan and Asia. \nRui Umezawa A Toronto writer and storyteller. His novel The Truth About Death and Dying was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Book Prize for Best First Book. His past participation in Katari inspired his most recent publication\, Strange Light Afar: Tales of the Supernatural from Old Japan. \nAisha Masaoka Aisha is excited to have the opportunity to perform with the Katari Storytellers again. She is a graduate of Humber College’s Theatre Performance Program. It was the winner of two awards at the 36th Montreal World Film Festival in 2012. SUMMARY:Being a doctor in Japan: From the everyday to the extraordinary
DESCRIPTION:Japan\, like all developed countries\, is facing challenges providing healthcare services to those living outside its major centres. Japan spends about 11% of its GDP on healthcare\, the same as in Canada. As is well known\, overall already 27% of Japan’s citizens are aged 65 or over\, compared with about 17% in Canada. Japan’s regional areas tend to be even older and suffer from a shortage of doctors. \nThe panel will comprise two parts. Dr. Shinya Ito\, of the Hospital for Sick Children\, will outline how Japan prepares doctors and delivers care and support in its regions\, in normal\, “everyday” circumstances. Dr. Takeshi Kanno\, Assistant Professor and Physician at Tohoku University Hospital\, will talk about his own experiences as a doctor responding to an “extraordinary” event\, the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami\, which hit the hospital he was working in.  Dr. James Tiessen\, of Ryerson University’s School of Health Services Management\, will be the chair. \n\n  \nDr. Shinya Ito is Professor and Chief\, Division of Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology\, Department of Paediatrics\, at the University of Toronto\, Hospital for Sick Children.  He is also Chair of the SickKids Drugs and Therapeutics committee and a WHO Expert Advisor. A prolific researcher\, he is widely published and received many awards for his research on medication safety in pregnant women\, breastfeeding mothers and babies\, and children. He earned his medical degree at Jichi Medical University and practiced in rural Japan before coming to the Hospital for Sick Children in 1989. \n  \n \nDr. Takeshi Kanno is Assistant Professor at Tohoku University Hospital in Sendai\, Japan.  He earned his medical degree at Jichi Medical University and his PhD at Tohoku University. Dr. Kanno  served in the front lines as a physician in the Tohoku Region when the earthquake and tsunami struck. His exemplary contributions to the care of victims earned him recognition as one of Time Magazine’s Most Influential People of 2011. \n  \n  \n \nDr. James Tiessen is Associate Professor and Director of the School of Health Services Management at Ryerson University. He studies healthcare policy and management\, with a focus on Japan and Canada. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. \n

DESCRIPTION:Print Exhibition\nJapan Foundation Touring Exhibition\nVariation and Autonomy:\nThe Prints by Contemporary Japanese Painters\n\nJanuary 10 – March 29\, 2018\nSensing the diverse potential of the print medium\, in the 1970s\, young Japanese artists began making prints\, and in so doing\, expanded the expressive range of contemporary art as a whole.Though certain aspects of this development have certainly been acknowledged\, it was mainly artists who did specialized in or concentrated on prints that served as pivotal figures in post – World War II\, contemporary Japanese print-making. Or at the very least\, that is the way it looks from this vantage point. In Europe and America\, artists who were responsible for trends in contemporary art made printmaking history. But the evolution Japanese printmaking seems to be a singular development in the world. \nHowever\, this does not mean that oil painters were not ambitiously engaged in printmaking from the prewar era onward. Some Japanese painters\, who had visited printmaking workshops in France\, Italy\, and Germany\, produced copperplate prints and lithographs at technical training sessions or in the workshops of acquaintances\, although the number of works was quite small. After World War II\, in the 1950s\, a growing number of painters worked in lithography and the emergence of the peintre-graveur (painter who is also a printmaker) in Japan was a noted phenomenon. Later\, in the 1960s\, printmaking rose to greater prominence and printing workshops were opened here and there\, creating an environment in which it was normal for artists who were not printmaking specialists\, from established painters and sculptors to emerging artists of the avant-garde\, to work with printers on production of their own prints. From the 1970s onward\, as the market value of prints rose\, an even greater number of artists turned their hands to prints in a wide range of styles and media\, strongly propelling the world of printmaking forward. This wide-open environment was correlated with a similarly broad range of printmaking expression among painters who were not specialists in printmaking. \nThis exhibition is not made up of works by artists who are considered to have created a unique or specific development in contemporary Japanese printmaking history\, but rather on those by artists who tend to be seen as support players in this process. There are two reasons for this focus. First\, the exhibition is designed to shed light on the fact that a new field was developed through contemporary Japanese prints. This field\, prints made by painters\, is notable both as a variation on painting and an autonomous form. Thus\, the works helped establish the genre of contemporary Japanese prints while imbuing it with a suitable breadth. Second\, the exhibition is intended to encourage viewers to reconsider the existing history of contemporary Japanese prints. Today\, 70 years after World War II\, at a point when prints are on the verge of being forgotten as a trend in contemporary art\, there is a need\, both in Japan and abroad\, to reconsider history from a variety of critical perspectives without overlooking the subject of dissolution. \nWithout a doubt\, the prints of the artists featured in this exhibition constitute variations on the medium of painting\, yet at the same time they stand alone as works of art that could only be realized through printmaking. DESCRIPTION:Panda and the Magic Serpent 白蛇伝\n   \nDirected by Taiji Yabushita and Kazuhiko Okabe \nProduced by Hiroshi Okawa\, Written by Taiji Yabushita\, Shin Uehara \nReleased in Japan 1958\, by Toei\, Released in North America 1961 by Global Pictures\n78 minutes\, English dubbed. \nTwo screening times: 12:00PM and 2:00 PM please RSVP below \nIn celebration of 100 years of Japanese animation\, we will be screening Panda and the Magic Serpent\, which is the first feature animation film in colour produced in Japan. \nThe feature follows the story adaptation of the Song Dynasty folktale\, Legend of the White Snake. \nA young boy\, Xu-Xian\, once owned a pet snake\, but his parents forced him to give it up. Years later\, during a storm\, the snake magically transforms into a beautiful princess named Bai-Niang. The princess finds the young boy\, and they fall in love. But soon after\, the two are separated by a local monk\, who believes the princess is an evil spirit with magical powers.  Meanwhile\, Xu-Xian’s pet Panda’s search for him. \nJoin us this afternoon to see what happens next! \nThis film marked Toei’s first attempt to follow the example of American feature animation studios and received honours at the Venice Children’s Film Festival in Italy in 1959.

An origin-story offshoot of a Japanese television phenomenon of the same name\, Three Outlaw Samurai is a classic in its own right. A wandering\, seen-it-all ronin (Tetsuro Tamba) becomes entangled in the dangerous business of two other samurai (Isamu Nagato and Mikijiro Hira)\, hired to execute a band of peasants who have kidnapped the daughter of a corrupt magistrate. With remarkable storytelling economy and thrilling action scenes\, this is an expertly mounted tale of revenge and loyalty. \n \nWith the opening of the most recent STAR WARS film\, THE LAST JEDI\, (December 2017) there has been discussion about how the story owes a lot to Samurai cinema. Some say that the very concept of Jedi was influenced by Samurai\, and the trilogy’s lightsaber fighting choreography took a lot from works of Japanese filmmakers in the 1950s and 1960s\, particularly Akira Kurosawa. \nQuartz writer Adam Eptein says that director-writer Rian Johnson is likely to continue the trend\, this time delving into Hideo Gosha’s first feature\, Three Outlaw Samurai. Gosha’s film might not be quite as well-known to Western audiences as some of Kurosawa’s films are\, but it’s still part of the Criterion Collection\, which we are screening tonight. \nWe will also be screening Yasujiro Ozu’s I WAS BORN\, BUT… on December 7. DESCRIPTION:I Was Born\, But… 大人の見る  繪本 生れてはみたけれど \nDirected by Yasujiro Ozu\, 1932 (90 minutes) \nSilent film with Japanese intertitles\, subtitled in English and musical score. \nIn celebration of the life of Japanese Cinema Master Yasujiro Ozu\, (born on December 12\, 1903 and died December 12\, 1963)\,we have a special screening of his film “I Was Born\, But…”. \nOne of Ozu’s most popular films\, I Was Born\, But . . . is a blithe portrait of the financial and psychological toils of one family\, as told from the rascally point of view of a couple of stubborn little boys. For two brothers\, the daily struggles of bullies and mean teachers is nothing next to the mortification they feel when they realize their good-natured father’s low-rung social status. Reworked decades later as Ozu’s Technicolor comedy Good Morning\, it’s a poignant evocation of the tumult of childhood\, as well as a showcase for Ozu’s expertly timed comedy editing. \nWe will also be screening Hideo Gosha’s THREE OUTLAW SAMURAI on December 11. By depicting the bond between a human and an android\, the film also explores the issue of respect for the dignity of others. Creator of the on-line version\, Yoshiura Yasuhiro has gone on to create\, script\, and direct this feature version as well. For example\, a person who fails to blend in to a community will be treated as an outsider\, but once recognised as an insider\, very strong relational bonds are formed. This short film explains the basics about what to do when you move in to a new place and how to greet your new neighbours. \n\nJapanese Vagueness\nIn many conversational situations\, Japanese people have a tendency to accommodate others by not clearly stating their own opinions. They use modest expressions like “It’s a very poor thing\, but please accept this” when presenting a gift. This second short film shows the distinction between surface expressions and actual feelings in the workplace\, where directness is often avoided for the sake of relationships. \nDon’t forget to bring your lunch (bento)!
