When a famous samurai chef from Kaga observes Haru’s culinary abilities\, he has a brilliant idea. The Funaki family\, who have served the Lord of Kaga for generations\, are known as “kitchen samurai” for their innovative dishes. However\, the heir to the family business\, Yasunobu\, shows little aptitude for or interest in cuisine. In order to save the Funaki family name and their reputation as kitchen samurai\, Haru agrees to marry Yasunobu and teach him the art of cooking. DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Japan Foundation\, Toronto for the opportunity to learn about the ins and outs of traditional Japanese comedy! \nIn this three-part event\, veteran rakugo (Japanese comedic story-telling) performer\, Yanagiya Sankyo\, will give a special demonstration about how Japanese comedy is performed\, and then local students studying Japanese who received special training from Yanagiya Sankyo will try their hand at making you laugh. To top it all off\, Yanagiya Sankyo and his apprentice\, Yanagiya Kyonosuke\, will also give you a taste of authentic rakugo with a bonus performance! \nNo Japanese ability required – English subtitles will be provided!\n\nWhat is Rakugo?\nRakugo is a traditional comedic storytelling performance. The performer sits on a cushion on the stage and tells a story which may involve several characters. He may stand up on his knees but never on his feet. His only props are a fan and a tenugui (Japanese towel). \nPerformer Profiles\nYanagiya Sankyo \nYanagiya Sankyo\nBorn in 1948\, he became an apprentice to Yanagiya Kosan V in 1967 and received a shin’uchi rank in 1981. He is a veteran rakugo performer who can portray the subtle emotions of a character during a performance. He is currently a board member of the Association of Rakugo Performers. \nYanagiya Kyonosuke\nYanagiya Kyonosuke was born in 1971 and became an apprentice of Yanagiya Sankyo in 1993. He also received a shin’uchi rank in 2007. Thank you for your interest. We will have a rush line starting 30 minutes before the event\, and will start to release unclaimed seats 10 minutes before the event. Unfortunately\, we cannot guarantee a seat.] \nDespite being set in the same location and time period of the Ako incident\, Hana is a samurai revenge movie in which not much happens. If you’re expecting dramatic battle scenes and bloviating about honour\, you’ll definitely be disappointed. However\, if you approach it from the humanist perspective of master director’s Hirokazu Kore-eda’s best films\, you’ll find a neat slice of life in the Edo slums that tears down the machismo of the jidai-geki genre with spirited populism (and a surprising amount of toilet humour). \nIn Hana’s Edo\, unemployed peasants do a lot of hanging out\, entertaining themselves with games\, sparring and gossip. Their main “job” is producing manure\, which their landlord sells to farmers. Soza is an unemployed samurai looking to avenge his father’s death\, but he’s not highly motivated to do so. He’s basically a peaceful guy who enjoys taking baths\, playing with songbirds and teaching math and writing to the neighbourhood kids. Anyway\, everyone agrees that revenge is sort of “out of fashion.” In the absence of actual war\, there is an annual “vengeance play” put on by the villagers; meanwhile\, the legendary 47 ronin lurk in the background\, grumbling and biding their time…

Although star Toshiro Mifune is best known for his roles in Kurosawa’s historical dramas\, such as The Seven Samurai and Rashomon\, he equally powerful playing a businessman bent on avenging the death of the father he never knew by marrying daughter of the man responsible and infiltrating his company.

In order to provide context for the exhibited prints\, we will give a presentation of scenes from current Kabuki theatre. This time\, Act 3\, in the Grand Corridor of Pine and Act 4\, Lord Hangan’s seppuku. \n  \n  \n\nThursday\, January 26\, 2017\, 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm \nKabuki “Treasury of Legendary Loyalty”: Act 5 & 6 Video Talk \nThe scenes described in Ukiyoe prints are traced through video images from contemporary Kabuki theatre and Bunraku puppet theatre. DESCRIPTION:Legendary Loyalty\nThe 47 Ronin in Japanese Prints \nco-presented by Stuart Jackson Gallery and The Japan Foundation\nNovember 15\, 2016 – March 4\, 2017 \nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto\, with the Stuart Jackson Gallery\, Toronto\, is proud to co-present original 18th – 19th century woodblock print illustrations of theatrical performances of the story of Chushingura\, and artistic depictions of the actual ronin (masterless samurai). \nThree centuries ago\, a series of events culminating on the snowy night of the 14th day of the 12th month\, 1702 (January 30\, 1703\, in today’s calendar) would shake and alter Japan and the world’s perception of that country. \nThe story of the 47 ronin and their vendetta is one of the most popular Japanese stories of “legendary loyalty” and revenge. It all began in 1701 when Lord Asano of Ako attempted to kill Lord Kira\, a senior official at the Shogun’s palace. His motive is unknown – in theatrical versions it is because Kira has insulted Asano.  Kira was only wounded\, but as it was such a serious offence\, Asano’s execution was ordered and he committed seppuku (ritual suicide).  Asano’s properties were confiscated and his retainers became ronin. \nThese 47 ronin\, under the leadership of Oishi Kuranosuke\, planned revenge against Lord Kira.  A year later\, they attacked his mansion and engaged in a fierce battle against his retainers. The ronin captured and killed Kira\, laying his severed head in front of Lord Asano’s grave at Sengakuji Temple.  They surrendered to the authorities\, were condemned to death\, and were allowed to perform seppuku. Their graves are by their master’s. \nThe story immediately captivated the Japanese public at the time. Within days of the deaths of the ronin\, a kabuki play based on the story was performed. The play was closed down after three days because stories about current events were prohibited. Other plays based on the ronin’s story kept reappearing until 1748 when a fictionalized drama\, Kanadehon Chushingura\, was successfully performed at the puppet theatre and later at the kabuki. Based on these plays\, master film director Kenji Mizoguchi created an epic piece by the same title in two parts: Part I (1941) and Part II (1942). DESCRIPTION:Are you studying Japanese and want to start expanding your skills beyond the classroom? \nJoin the Japan Foundation\, Toronto for our new intermediate-level (JF Standard B1) Japanese language class\, Japanese Through Food: Okonomiyaki! \nPerhaps best known for being popular in the Kansai region\, okonomiyaki can be considered Japanese “comfort food.” In this 3-week class focusing on conversation\, students will first learn about and discuss how to make okonomiyaki\, and then take what they’ve learned to share how to make their own comfort food with everyone. \n※ Note: This is not a cooking class\, but we will visit a nearby restaurant to see how it is made and try it out for ourselves! \nCourse Content & Schedule:\nThis course runs Thursday nights for three weeks in November/December: \n・　November 17: Talking about okonomiyaki / recipes in Japanese\n・　November 24: Review/preparation / trip to an okonomiyaki restaurant*\n・　December 1: Discussing your own “comfort food” / recipe sharing \n* The cost of dinner is not included in the class. DESCRIPTION:Legendary Loyalty\nThe 47 Ronin in Japanese Prints \nco-presented by Stuart Jackson Gallery and The Japan Foundation\nNovember 15\, 2016 – March 4\, 2017 \n  \nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto\, with the Stuart Jackson Gallery\, Toronto\, is proud to co-present original 18th – 19th century woodblock print illustrations of theatrical performances of the story of Chushingura\, and artistic depictions of the actual ronin (masterless samurai). \nThree centuries ago\, a series of events culminating on the snowy night of the 14th day of the 12th month\, 1702 (January 30\, 1703\, in today’s calendar) would shake and alter Japan and the world’s perception of that country. \nThe story of the 47 ronin and their vendetta is one of the most popular Japanese stories of “legendary loyalty” and revenge. It all began in 1701 when Lord Asano of Ako attempted to kill Lord Kira\, a senior official at the Shogun’s palace. His motive is unknown – in theatrical versions it is because Kira has insulted Asano.  Kira was only wounded\, but as it was such a serious offence\, Asano’s execution was ordered and he committed seppuku (ritual suicide).  Asano’s properties were confiscated and his retainers became ronin. \nThese 47 ronin\, under the leadership of Oishi Kuranosuke\, planned revenge against Lord Kira.  A year later\, they attacked his mansion and engaged in a fierce battle against his retainers. The ronin captured and killed Kira\, laying his severed head in front of Lord Asano’s grave at Sengakuji Temple.  They surrendered to the authorities\, were condemned to death\, and were allowed to perform seppuku. Their graves are by their master’s. \nThe story immediately captivated the Japanese public at the time. Within days of the deaths of the ronin\, a kabuki play based on the story was performed. The play was closed down after three days because stories about current events were prohibited. Other plays based on the ronin’s story kept reappearing until 1748 when a fictionalized drama\, Kanadehon Chushingura\, was successfully performed at the puppet theatre and later at the kabuki. SUMMARY:Visualize & Awaken: A Talk by Kenya Hara
DESCRIPTION:Talk and slide presentation in conjunction with Designthinkers 2016 \nDesigner\, Kenya Hara (b.1958) emphasizes the design of both objects and experiences. \nIn 2000\, he produced the exhibition RE-DESIGN–Daily Products of the 21st Century\, which successfully presented the fact that the resources of astonishing design are found in the context of the very ordinary and casual. In 2002\, Hara became a member of MUJI’s advisory board and began acting as its art director. In 2004\, he planned and directed the exhibition HAPTIC – Awakening the Senses revealing to the audience that great resources of design are dormant in the human senses. Much of his work\, including the programs for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Nagano Winter Olympic Games and Expo 2005 is deeply rooted in Japanese culture. In 2007 and 2009\, he produced two exhibitions titled TOKYO FIBER — SENSEWARE in Paris\, Milan and Tokyo\, and from 2008 through 2009\, the exhibition JAPAN CAR in Paris and at the Science Museum in London. Hara’s focus in these kinds of exhibitions is on visualizing and widely disseminating the potentiality of industry. The radius of his activity has been expanding to the rest of Asia as well\, including the traveling exhibition DESIGNING DESIGN Kenya Hara 2011 China Exhibition that starts in Beijing in 2011. SUMMARY:Takashi Hiraide Author's Talk: The life of a book....somewhere between the Cat and the Walnut.
DESCRIPTION:Takashi Hiraide\, celebrated author and book designer\, will discuss his literary and artistic practice in relation to his published works and ongoing mail art experiment.  Hiraide contemplates the life of what we consider to be a “book” and its origins in the form of diaries and letters. Hiraide is involved in the complete process of bringing a book to life\, including the book-binding\, design and in some cases\, even the shipping to an individual reader\, as exhibited within “Takashi Hiraide —- Airpost Poetry Book Design for One from One.” His modern art influences and book design will be explored in relation to the current exhibition. The interplay of different literary forms and genres is a constant throughout Hiraide’s body of work. This will be discussed by exploring the principles of the Japanese “I novel” (a genre of confessional\, fictionalized memoir)\, Dada and Surrealism found in The Guest Cat\, and how poetics\, autobiography and playful linguistics merge in For the Fighting Spirit of the Walnut. \nTo register\, please contact rsvp@jftor.org including your full name\, phone number and total number of guests. Feral and desperate\, the two women survive by murdering lost samurai\, dumping their bodies into a deep pit and selling their armour for rice. An army deserter arrives on the scene\, claiming that Kichi has died in battle. He takes a fancy to the younger woman\, and soon she is slipping out into the night for secret trysts. But the elder woman is desperate to hang on to her partner in crime… \n\nToshi Aoyagi is the program officer of visual and performing arts at The Japan Foundation\, Toronto. PG\nCanadian premiere- director present for intro and Q&A! \nAs the founder of Michinoku Pro-Wrestling\, the masked wrestler known as The Great Sasuke brought Mexican-style lucha libre to Japan in the 1990s and became an international star\, known as a showman with a flair for crazy ideas and dangerous moves. Mikiko Sasaki’s documentary finds Sasuke at a turning point in his career\, considering a return to politics (he once served as the first masked member of the Iwate Prefectural Diet) and dealing with the effects on his body of 20 years in the ring. A warm portrait of a true individualist\, The Great Sasuke also manages to touch on the challenges being married to a risk-taking athlete\, the aftermath of the 2011 tsunami in Tohoku\, and the travails of a local politician on the campaign trail\, offering an unconventional slice of life in Northern Japan. \nimage © Jonathan Schwarz\n\nMikiko Sasaki is a documentary filmmaker based in Oakland\, CA.
