DESCRIPTION:TAKASHI HIRAIDE—-AIRPOST POETRY\nBOOK DESIGN FOR ONE FROM ONE \nOctober 4 – November 5\, 2016\nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto \n《TH_AIRPOST》is  an “Aerial Post Office” utilized by the Minimum Press which was created by Hiraide in relationship with the postal system. The author writes\, creates the layout\, prints\, formats and does the bookbinding by himself. The literary work that is created in this way is accessed through an intermediary post office located on the web and ultimately delivered to the individual mailboxes of readers worldwide. \nThere is a “Book” that is both a letter and an objet d’art or a “Poem” that is both a postcard and a greeting\, and these create a unique one-to-one relationship\, a bridge between the reader and the author. In the same way that various life forms exist in relationship with the environment while adapting their forms to others\, the creation of the singular experience of the book unfolds. \nThe《AIRPOST POETRY》exhibit is the first time that an overview of this experiment 《FOR ONE FROM ONE》has been presented. \n\nTakashi Hiraide is a poet\, critic and book designer. He has published books of various genres and forms from poetry to prose and from poetics of sports to criticism on arts\, receiving numerous prizes. Kenzaburo Oe\, Nobel Prize-winning novelist\, highly praised Hiraide’s writings for providing a new direction for prose within the field of poetry. His first novel\, The Guest Cat\, became a New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller in 2014. \n

A series of love triangles set within the Tokyo music scene plays out in moody Eastmancolor\, but this film is less noir than male melodrama: the central problem is neither corruption nor romance but the lack of a mother’s love. Yujiro is both lover and fighter\, performing self-assertion and sexual prowess for male and female audiences in conformist Japan. Cute digital effects and gaudy musical numbers belie a story of abuse that has much in common with Kenji Mizoguchi’s Life of Oharu. Matsuko (Miki Nakatani of the Ring franchise) is found beaten to death in poor suburb of Tokyo. Alienated from her family\, her life is dismissed as meaningless until her loser nephew\, tasked with cleaning up her apartment\, starts to piece it together. This course places its focus on speaking\, and over three weeks in July/August students will gain the knowledge and skills to start talking about themselves and their world in Japanese. \nAnd not only will students learn to speak in Japanese\, they will also put it to use outside of the classroom with a trip to a local Japanese restaurant! \nRegistration for this class is now full. We thank everyone for their interest.\nCourse Content & Schedule:\nThis course runs Tuesday and Thursday nights for three weeks in July/August\, and includes 5 classes and 1 night out! In each class\, not only will we look at the Japanese language\, but also showcase Japanese culture and various Japanese resources available at the JFT and in the city at large! \n・　July 26: Orientation / Greetings in Japanese / Toronto’s Japanese Community\n・　July 28: Talking about yourself / JFT Gallery Tour\n・　August 2: Talking about your hobbies & interests / Japanese Business Culture\n・　August 4: Talking about food / JFT Library Tour\n・　August 9: Ordering at a restaurant / Japanese Food Culture\n・　August 11: Dinner at a local Japanese restaurant* \n* The cost of dinner is not included in the course fees. Sprinkle it on rice and the rice changes into sake… This mould is a tiny organism called Aspergillus oryzae and mysteriously\, it exists only in Japan! We travel to the imperial city of Kyoto\, where the ancient craft of brewing shoyu is preserved. This delicate process begins in spring and requires a whole year to mature the soy sauce. After clearing a section of her forest\, she grows four successive yearly crops of buckwheat\, Japanese millet\, adzuki beans and soybeans\, then lets forest grow wild again for 26 years before starting a new crop cycle. DESCRIPTION:Organized by: The Japan Foundation\, Toronto \nThe initial clash of ceramic artist Julia Nema’s predominantly Constructivist and Bauhaus background with the immediacy\, naked materiality and natural imperfection of Japanese aesthetics led her to embark on a long adventure in search of parallel values bridging distant traditions and processes. \nIn this talk\, Prof. Nema will offer both theoretical and practical insights into how she has worked for years to translate the inspiration found in Japanese yakishime ceramics through her own artistic thinking and creation. She will make reference to the rich material on show in the current gallery exhibition Yakishime: Earth Metamorphosis\, as well as her own artworks\, products and findings from her book Fired up High: Approaches to Wood-fired Ceramics. \nFollowing the talk\, Prof. Nema will participate in a discussion on her work and inspiration with Toronto-based ceramic artists Chari Cohen and Chiho Tokita. \n  \n\n  \nAbout the speaker: \nJulia Nema is a ceramic artist\, designer and painter based in Budapest\, Hungary. Her studio is the only ceramic workshop in Hungary using a high-temperature\, wood-fired kiln for production. She has been awarded the Ferenczy Noemi Award and the Hungarian Design Award. She has been featured in international publications related to ceramics\, including F. She holds a PhD in Liberal Arts from Moholy–Nagy University of Art and Design. DESCRIPTION:Organized by: The Japan Foundation\, Toronto \nAfter her first visit in 2005 to a yakishime-style ceramics manufacturing centre in northern Japan\, ceramic artist Julia Nema returned to Japan as a Japan Foundation Fellow in 2013 on an extensive study trip to various kiln sites\, artists’ studios and major ceramics collections. \nIn her lecture\, Prof. Nema will help us discover\, understand and appreciate the unique beauty born from the direct interaction of pure\, unglazed clay and fire– the subject of the current exhibition Yakishime: Earth Metamorphosis. SUMMARY:Yakishime Ceramic Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:May 24 – August 18\, 2016\nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto \nYAKISHIME—Earth Metamorphosis focuses on the yakishime ceramic technique in which unglazed wares are fired at extremely high temperatures of 1\,200-1\,300˚C. While one of the most basic or primitive means of producing ceramics\, yakishime has developed in distinctive directions in Japan\, and production has continued unbroken from Japan’s middle ages through the present. \nThe process\, which dates back as far as the 4th or 5th century\, became a mainstay of the Japanese ceramic repertoire in the 17th century\, and remains a substantial component of the output for major ceramic centres such as Bizen and Shigaraki. The high-firing produces vitrification\, or glassiness\, and a rough\, earthy surface punctuated with patches of brilliant sheen and colour. In addition\, it makes the results unpredictable\, and the challenge facing the ceramist is to retain control over the delicate transformations in the clay. \nThis exhibition examines yakishime as an element of traditional Japanese culture from its earliest origins to contemporary works. It includes pieces made for the tea ceremony\, demonstrating how yakishime gained new status in the Muromachi period (1338–1573)\, as practitioners searched for a distinctively Japanese sense of wabi and sabi\, the art of finding beauty in imperfection and profundity in the natural and authentic. Also presented are examples of yakishime tableware\, essential items for serving Japanese food through which we can glimpse a uniquely Japanese sensibility. SUMMARY:Reflecting on the Past/ Reflecting on the Future: Hyogo Aid ’95 Revisited
DESCRIPTION:April 13 – May 13\, 2016\nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto\nThe works exhibited here form a set of posters\, compiled as an initiative of the Hyogo Aid ’95 Committee in 1996. In order to support the victims of the Great Hanshin Awaji Earthquake\, twenty-three artists\, designers\, and photographers contributed images of their original works. In A1 size\, a common poster format in Japan\, these artworks were reproduced using state-of-the-art printing technology. Tadanori Yokoo\, one of the star participating artists of this series\, designed the exhibition poster and visited The Japan Foundation\, Toronto for the opening. \n\nDirector’s Message:\nThe journey is the reward. \nIn 1995\, the Japan Foundation\, Toronto was reborn. What began as an office became a fully-fledged cultural centre\, complete with a gallery for the exhibition of Japanese and Japan-related artworks. \nAnd the exhibition that first graced our gallery walls at our original location in the Colonnade was Hyogo Aid ’95. \n1995 was the year of the devastating Great Hanshin Earthquake in Kobe in which over six thousand lives were lost. The international community embraced the people of Japan\, and we were overwhelmed by the kind thoughts of those in Canada and all over the world. \nMany Japanese artists also showed their solidarity by contributing works of art in support of recovery efforts. Thus the Hyogo Aid ’95 project was born. \nNow we find ourselves twenty years on in a new location\, looking back on the many exhibitions and programs we have been able to present. Seeing the artwork in this collection on the gallery walls at the Japan Foundation\, Toronto once again\, I am reminded of the journey we have taken.
