Witch Hat Atelier won the 2020 Eisner Award for Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia\, and in 2020\, the series won the Harvey Award for the Best Manga category . A food-focused spin-off series\, Witch Hat Atelier Kitchen\, by Hiromi Sato and created by Kamome Shirahama began English-language publication in 2023. A graduate of the design department of the Tokyo University of the Arts\, Shirahama lives in Tokyo\, Japan. After receiving an MFA in illustration from Savannah College of Art and Design\, Rumi moved to New York in 2014\, where she now lives and works as an illustrator and comics artist. Her comics series Nori was first self-published as minicomics and was nominated for an Ignatz Award in 2018 before being published by Drawn & Quarterly in 2020. Her most recent book is The Peanutbutter Sisters and Other American Stories (May 2022). \n  \nThe Peanutbutter Sisters and Other American Stories\nDrawn & Quarterly\, 2022\n \nAn immigrant weaves a new\, surreal Americana\, complete with bubblegum fights and bomb queens.\nThe Peanutbutter Sisters is a glorious balance of contradictions\, at once escapism and realism\, science fiction and slice of life. Two students explore the urban landscape while following Newton Creek\, the polluted Queens-Brooklyn border. As they do\, they plan a traditional Japanese play with contemporary pop culture. In 2004\, she made her manga debut in the monthly magazine Bessatsu Shojo Friend DX Juliet. Her first serialized work in a young men’s magazine was Ohayou Okaeri\, which was published in Morning Two. This was followed by Sensei’s Pious Lie\, which drew widespread attention for its focus on the theme of sexual violence. In addition\, Onna no Ie\, a series about two sisters who must live under one roof\, made the list for Takarajimasha’s Kono Manga ga Sugoi! (This Manga is Amazing!) in the women’s category\, while Jigoku no Girlfriend\, a story about three women made housemates by chance\, was adapted into a live-action TV show. Her latest ongoing series\, Saturn Return\, which is published weekly in Big Comic Spirits magazine\, is a mystery that revolves around suicide and loss. \n  \nSensei’s Pious Lie\, Volume 1\nKodansha\, 2022 \nMisuzu Hara is a quiet\, reserved 24-year-old high school teacher whose world is turned upside down after her friend’s fiancé rapes her. Her attempt to connect with one of her students\, himself a victim of sexual trauma\, results in an unlikely romance\, and the repercussions of these events affect everyone around them in often unpredicatable ways. \n18+. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion with Gurihiru (the artist duo of Chifuyu Sasaki and Naoko Kawano) about their work as illustrators and manga and comic artists! Gurihiru are featured guests of The Toronto Comic Arts Festival\, and designed one of the official 2015 posters. \nAbout Gurihiru: \nGurihiru\, aka Illustrator Unit Gurihiru and Gurihiru Studios\, is a Japanese illustration team\, composed of artists Chifuyu Sasaki (workplan design\, pencils\, inks) and Naoko Kawano (workplan design\, colors\, webdesign). Though its comic book endeavors are centered in the United States\, Gurihiru also illustrates character designs for games and animations in Japan. \nThe pair have worked in several Marvel Comics titles\, such as: Power Pack\, Fantastic Four\, and Gus Beezer & Spider Man\, as well as Thor\, Captain America\, and Wolverine. More recently\, Gurihiru has come together with Nickelodeon and Dark Horse Comics to continue the story of Avatar: The Last Airbender in graphic novel format\, a collaborative effort that has spawned three trilogies: The Promise\, The Search\, and The Rift\, which were be released throughout 2014. \n
