SUMMARY:JFT Online ‘Can-Do’ Workshop for Japanese-Language Teachers
\nお問い合わせ先：齋藤典子　Noriko_Saito@jpf.go.jp

SUMMARY:Katabui\, in the Heart of Okinawa (virtual film screening)
DESCRIPTION:Katabui\, in the Heart of Okinawa\nカタブイ 沖縄に生きる\nKatabui\, au cœur d’Okinawa \nFriday\, June 21\, 5:59PM (ET) – Sunday\, June 23\, 11:59PM (ET)\nVirtual Film Screening | Free Admission | Canada-wide \nDirected by Daniel López • 2016 • Documentary • 80 minutes • Presented in Japanese & French with English subtitles • Trailer \n“Katabui” means “squall” in the Okinawan dialect. \nDaniel López knew very little about Okinawa. Seduced by these southern Japanese islands\, once an independent kingdom\, he left Switzerland to settle there. Ten years later\, he shares his fondness for Okinawa but also reflects on the archipelago’s identity\, threatened by the U.S. military presence and excessive urban development. \nDuring their struggle against the U.S. military bases\, the Okinawan people have found the ability to peacefully resist. They have been able to maintain an indomitable identity\, which fascinates even the mainland Japanese. To understand this peaceful resistance\, Daniel López takes us on a journey into the heart of Okinawa to discover a local belief with inspirational scope. \nThis screening is a part of our ongoing Keep Dancin’\, Okinawa! film series\, celebrating Okinawan stories\, culture\, and history. \nFree to Stream. Register below. \n*After registration\, a streaming link will be sent to you on June 21. You will be able to watch the film anytime between June 21\, 5:59 (ET) to June 23\, 11:59 (ET) regardless of which date option you select in the registration form below. \n\nDirector Profile: \n \nDaniel López was born in Switzerland in 1970 and moved to Okinawa in 2003. In 2010\, he graduated from the University of Arts in Okinawa. He then worked as a photographer\, publisher and TV presenter. In 2015\, he made his first feature-length documentary Katabui\, in the Heart of Okinawa. His film Umui – Guardians of Traditions (2022) was awarded the Grand Prix for Best Anthropological-Ethnographic Film at the 2022 Tokyo Documentary Film Festival. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Living with Ceramics in Japan: From Edo (1603-1868) to Meiji (1868-1912)
DESCRIPTION:This online talk will explore how people in Japan used ceramics during the Edo period\, when the Tokugawa shogunate ruled the archipelago and the samurai held political and military dominance\, and the Meiji period\, when the emperor was symbolically restored to power and modernization transformed the nation. \nUsing extant examples of ceramics from a variety of museum collections\, the lecture will consider ceramics in plebian\, everyday contexts\, used for daily offerings at altars\, for family meals\, or for tea and sake drinking with friends. It will also discuss the use of ceramics in politically and economically significant encounters\, such as gifts to a samurai lord\, meetings between merchants and customers\, tribute offerings to the Tokugawa shoguns\, and diplomatic exchanges between the Meiji government and their global counterparts. \nThis talk is presented to complement our ongoing exhibition titled “From Edo to Meiji: Transformation of Japanese Ceramics”. \n\nThe Speaker \nDr. Morgan Pitelka is the Bernard L. Herman Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, with joint appointments in the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and the Department of History. He is a historian of medieval and early modern Japan who focuses on material culture\, environmental history\, and urban history. His new project is an environmental and cultural history of early modern Kyoto. His most recent book\, Reading Medieval Ruins: Urban Life and Destruction in Sixteenth-Century Japan (Cambridge University Press\, 2022) was named one of the ten best humanities books in Asian Studies by the International Convention of Asia Scholars and received the honorable mention for the John Whitney Hall Book Prize in Japanese Studies. \n  \n  \n\nRelated Programming:  \nJFT Book Club (Hybrid)– With Silent Reading Time – Japanese Ceramics & Life in the Edo to Meiji Periods\n \nTuesday\, June 18\, 5:30PM – 7:00PM (ET)\nHybrid (Online & In-Person) | JFT Library | Admission Free | Registration Required \nAre you interested in learning deeper about Japanese arts\, as well as the culture and history behind those works of art?
