SUMMARY:JFT Online ‘Can-Do’ Workshop for Japanese-Language Teachers
\nお問い合わせ先：齋藤典子　Noriko_Saito@jpf.go.jp

SUMMARY:Katabui\, in the Heart of Okinawa (virtual film screening)
DESCRIPTION:Katabui\, in the Heart of Okinawa\nカタブイ 沖縄に生きる\nKatabui\, au cœur d’Okinawa \nFriday\, June 21\, 5:59PM (ET) – Sunday\, June 23\, 11:59PM (ET)\nVirtual Film Screening | Free Admission | Canada-wide \nDirected by Daniel López • 2016 • Documentary • 80 minutes • Presented in Japanese & French with English subtitles • Trailer \n“Katabui” means “squall” in the Okinawan dialect. \nDaniel López knew very little about Okinawa. Seduced by these southern Japanese islands\, once an independent kingdom\, he left Switzerland to settle there. Ten years later\, he shares his fondness for Okinawa but also reflects on the archipelago’s identity\, threatened by the U.S. military presence and excessive urban development. \nDuring their struggle against the U.S. military bases\, the Okinawan people have found the ability to peacefully resist. They have been able to maintain an indomitable identity\, which fascinates even the mainland Japanese. To understand this peaceful resistance\, Daniel López takes us on a journey into the heart of Okinawa to discover a local belief with inspirational scope. \nThis screening is a part of our ongoing Keep Dancin’\, Okinawa! film series\, celebrating Okinawan stories\, culture\, and history. \nFree to Stream. Register below. \n*After registration\, a streaming link will be sent to you on June 21. You will be able to watch the film anytime between June 21\, 5:59 (ET) to June 23\, 11:59 (ET) regardless of which date option you select in the registration form below. \n\nDirector Profile: \n \nDaniel López was born in Switzerland in 1970 and moved to Okinawa in 2003. In 2010\, he graduated from the University of Arts in Okinawa. He then worked as a photographer\, publisher and TV presenter. In 2015\, he made his first feature-length documentary Katabui\, in the Heart of Okinawa. His film Umui – Guardians of Traditions (2022) was awarded the Grand Prix for Best Anthropological-Ethnographic Film at the 2022 Tokyo Documentary Film Festival. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Living with Ceramics in Japan: From Edo (1603-1868) to Meiji (1868-1912)
DESCRIPTION:This online talk will explore how people in Japan used ceramics during the Edo period\, when the Tokugawa shogunate ruled the archipelago and the samurai held political and military dominance\, and the Meiji period\, when the emperor was symbolically restored to power and modernization transformed the nation. \nUsing extant examples of ceramics from a variety of museum collections\, the lecture will consider ceramics in plebian\, everyday contexts\, used for daily offerings at altars\, for family meals\, or for tea and sake drinking with friends. It will also discuss the use of ceramics in politically and economically significant encounters\, such as gifts to a samurai lord\, meetings between merchants and customers\, tribute offerings to the Tokugawa shoguns\, and diplomatic exchanges between the Meiji government and their global counterparts. \nThis talk is presented to complement our ongoing exhibition titled “From Edo to Meiji: Transformation of Japanese Ceramics”. \n\nThe Speaker \nDr. Morgan Pitelka is the Bernard L. Herman Distinguished Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, with joint appointments in the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies and the Department of History. He is a historian of medieval and early modern Japan who focuses on material culture\, environmental history\, and urban history. His new project is an environmental and cultural history of early modern Kyoto. His most recent book\, Reading Medieval Ruins: Urban Life and Destruction in Sixteenth-Century Japan (Cambridge University Press\, 2022) was named one of the ten best humanities books in Asian Studies by the International Convention of Asia Scholars and received the honorable mention for the John Whitney Hall Book Prize in Japanese Studies. \n  \n  \n\nRelated Programming:  \nJFT Book Club (Hybrid)– With Silent Reading Time – Japanese Ceramics & Life in the Edo to Meiji Periods\n \nTuesday\, June 18\, 5:30PM – 7:00PM (ET)\nHybrid (Online & In-Person) | JFT Library | Admission Free | Registration Required \nAre you interested in learning deeper about Japanese arts\, as well as the culture and history behind those works of art? Our upcoming hybrid-style book club meeting\, inspired by the JFT Gallery’s current exhibition\, invites you to explore the beauty of Japanese ceramics and life during the Edo and Meiji periods through books! No prior knowledge/preparation is required – pick a book from the library’s book list (or bring your own) and indulge in the simple pleasure of reading in silence. Afterward\, engage in optional discussion to share your discoveries with fellow book\, art\, and history enthusiasts. This is a perfect opportunity to enhance your understanding of Japanese arts and culture while connecting with like-minded individuals. We welcome both seasoned book club members and first-time participants to join this enriching literary and cultural experience! \nDetails here

SUMMARY:Japanese Video Games and the Mediation of Trauma
DESCRIPTION:This is a virtual event. Register using the form below to receive a link to the talk. \nHow do Japanese video games grapple with social anxieties and traumatic events? And how might games prompt players’ own emotional engagement and self-reflection around these issues? \nThis talk introduces four contemporary Japanese video games in terms of how they simulate some of Japan’s biggest social and personal issues: natural disasters (Disaster Report)\, a declining birthrate and aging population (Catherine)\, nuclear proliferation (Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain)\, and youth social withdrawal (The World Ends with You). Come along with us and investigate what some of the positive benefits are of working through a site of trauma from within a video game. See how might games teach us about Japanese culture and society through interactive frameworks different from literature and film. \n\n**Please note that due to the age ratings of the video games to be discussed\, parental supervision is advised for young viewers. \n\nThe Speaker\nBen Whaley is Associate Professor of Japanese in the School of Languages\, Linguistics\, Literatures and Cultures at the University of Calgary. His research examines ethno-racial identity and trauma in Japanese popular culture. He is the author of Toward a Gameic World: New Rules of Engagement from Japanese Video Games (University of Michigan Press\, 2023). His essays on manga and video games have also appeared in the Journal of Asian Studies\, positions asia critique\, and the Journal of Japanese Studies (forthcoming). \n\nImages: World Ends Without You (2007\, Square Enix/Jupiter); Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (2015\, Konami); Disaster Report (2002\, Irem) \n\nJFT Library Items on Video Games\nComplementing Dr. Ben Whaley’s lecture\, JFT Library presents a curated selection of physical and electronic books on Japanese video games. Immerse yourself even deeper into the world of Japanese video games and their transformative power by checking out those items before or after the online lecture! You can borrow our physical items by visiting JFT library in person during our hours and/or borrow ebooks by accessing JF Canada Digital Library\, which is available 24/7. \nCheck JFT Library Item List (PDF) to help you decide which item to explore! \nApply for a new JFT library card or renew your expired card here.
