SUMMARY:Makuko (virtual film screening)
DESCRIPTION:Makuko • まく子\nFriday\, March 17\, 5:59PM – Sunday\, March 19\, 11:59PM (ET) \nDirected by TSURUOKA Keiko • 2019 • Drama / Sci-Fi / Coming-of-Age • 108 min.\nPresented in Japanese with English subtitles • Trailer\nOnline Film Screening • Admission Free • RSVP Required (register below) \nWe’re back with another online film screening after a short hiatus! Join us online from across Canada for the screening of MAKUKO\, a coming-of-age with a cosmic twist! \nFifth-grader Satoshi (YAMAZAKI Hikaru) is distressed by his changing body and feels repelled by his womanizing father (KUSANAGI Tsuyoshi). Then\, Satoshi gradually finds himself drawn to Kozue (Ninon)\, a mysterious transfer student who won’t leave his side. Kozue and her mother start living in the guesthouse of Satoshi’s family inn and soon Kozue confides in Satoshi an unbelievable secret: She came from another planet! \nIn a sunny tale of youth\, director TSURUOKA Keiko recounts the alien sensation of first love from the perspective of a boy who doesn’t want to become a man. Instead\, he ponders the big questions of mortality. \n \n \n \nDirector Biography: \nBorn in 1988\, TSURUOKA Keiko (鶴岡慧子) began making movies while attending Rikkyo University. Her graduation work\, the short film The Town of Whales won the Grand Prize at the 2012 Pia Film Festival (PFF)\, and was shown at the 63rd Berlinale International Film Festival\, the 17th Busan International Film Festival\, and many other film festivals around the world. In 2012\, she began studying directing at Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School of Film and New Media. The second film she directed there\, the feature film My First Love (2013)\, was nominated for the Dragons & Tigers Award for Young Cinema at the Vancouver International Film Festival. Lingering Memories (2015; a PFF scholarship work) was her first theatrical release. \n© Shingo Wakagi \nOriginal Author Biography: \nNISHI Kanako (西加奈子) was born in Tehran\, Iran\, where her family had relocated for her father’s job. She subsequently lived in Japan for several years before moving with her family to Cairo\, Egypt\, where she spent four of her elementary school years. The male protagonist’s early life in her novel Saraba! (So Long!) roughly parallels her own. At 25 she began writing fiction\, and made her literary debut in 2004 with the short story collection Aoi (Blue). In 2006 she won the Oda Sakunosuke Prize for her novel Tsūtenkaku (Tower to Heaven)\, and in 2012 she received the Kawai Hayao Prize for the novel Fukuwarai (Funny Face). Her monumental 2014 novel Saraba!\, in which the action roves across all of the places where she has lived\, from Iran to Egypt and Osaka to Tokyo\, garnered her the prestigious Naoki Prize. Nishi’s forthright portrayals of the alienation experienced by characters with strong personalities have gained her a wide following\, especially among young readers. She is also known as an avid fan of professional wrestling. \n \nRelated Programming:\nTranscending Borders: Author NISHI Kanako in conversation with Dr. Christina Laffin \nBeloved Japanese author NISHI Kanako has written more than twenty novels\, essay and short story collections\, and children’s books. The text will be divided into 3 parts\, each of which will be assigned to a group of participants. \n*The text we will be reading is based on various versions\, including the abridged version on the Japan Foundation’s Minna no Kyozai website\, with unique additions by our very own team at the Japan Foundation\, Toronto. \n\n \nMaterials: \n\n\n\nJapanese text with accompanying Furigana/Ruby: View here (final version will be sent to participants)\nEnglish translation for reference\n\n\n\nParticipation Requirements:\n \nJapanese language learners from anywhere in Canada\, with Late-Elementary or Pre-Intermediate Japanese language proficiency\, defined as: \n\n\n\nLate-Elementary (A2-2) and Pre-Intermediate (A2/B1) level for JFT students\, or\nJLPT N4~N5 level or equivalent\, or\nLevel 3 on a 5-level scale\n\n\n\n? Not sure of your level? Therefore\, the Canadian Association for Japanese Language Education (CAJLE) and the Japan Foundation\, Toronto are holding an online networking meeting to provide an opportunity for those who are working hard in different areas to discuss and learn from each others’ experiences. \nThe 8th session will include presentations and Q&A from learners who have studied Japanese language education as a heritage language. \nAnyone who lives in Canada and is interested is welcome to attend. This will be an exciting opportunity to connect with other book lovers from different cultural backgrounds\, find new and interesting books\, authors\, or themes\, and develop a richer understanding of Japan that you wouldn’t gain from reading alone. \n  \n\nWHERE YOU CAN FIND THE BOOK? \nTemple Alley Summer (帰命寺横丁の夏) by KASHIWABA Sachiko is available for circulation at JFT Library. Search JFT Library’s Online Catalogue or JF OverDrive (ebooks) to see if the item is available to borrow or to place a hold. \nTo get a new library card or to renew your existing card\, please follow the instructions found here. \nFor more information about the book\, click here. \n\nABOUT THE BOOK \n Temple Alley Summer (帰命寺横丁の夏)\nWritten by KASHIWABA Sachiko\nIllustration by SATAKE Miho\nTranslated by Avery Fischer Udagawa\nYonder: Restless Books for Young Readers\, 2021 \n  \nKazu knows something odd is going on when he sees a girl in a white kimono sneak out of his house in the middle of the night—was he dreaming? Did he see a ghost? Things get even stranger when he shows up to school the next day to see the very same figure sitting in his classroom. No one else thinks it’s weird\, and\, even though Kazu doesn’t remember ever seeing her before\, they all seem convinced that the ghost-girl Akari has been their friend for years! \nWhen Kazu’s summer project to learn about Kimyo Temple draws the meddling attention of his mysterious neighbor Ms. Minakami and his secretive new classmate Akari\, Kazu soon learns that not everything is as it seems in his hometown. Kazu discovers that Kimyo Temple is linked to a long forgotten legend about bringing the dead to life\, which could explain Akari’s sudden appearance—is she a zombie or a ghost? Kazu and Akari join forces to find and protect the source of the temple’s power. An unfinished story in a magazine from Akari’s youth might just hold the key to keeping Akari in the world of the living\, and it’s up to them to find the story’s ending and solve the mystery as the adults around them conspire to stop them from finding the truth. \n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nKASHIWABA Sachiko is a prolific writer of children’s and young adult fantasy whose career spans more than four decades. Her works have garnered the prestigious Sankei\, Shogakukan\, and Noma children’s literature awards\, and her novel The Marvelous Village Veiled in Mist influenced Hayao Miyazaki’s film Spirited Away.
