\n担当：\n国際交流基金トロント日本文化センター　齋藤典子\nE-mail: Noriko_Saito@jpf.go.jp     Web site: www.jftor.org\nカナダ日本語教育振興会　張硯君\nE-mail: yzha5452@uwo.ca             Web site: https://www.cajle.info/ \n  \n\n\nKeishogo Online Network 8\n\nThere are many students\, teachers and parents who are involved in Japanese language education as a heritage language in various parts of Canada\, but because schools are located far apart\, it is difficult to exchange information and network. In addition\, in some areas\, schools are only run by a small number of people\, or have to be built from the ground up\, making it difficult to exchange ideas with people who have experience in the field. Therefore\, the Canadian Association for Japanese Language Education (CAJLE) and the Japan Foundation\, Toronto are holding an online networking meeting to provide an opportunity for those who are working hard in different areas to discuss and learn from each others’ experiences. \nThe 8th session will include presentations and Q&A from learners who have studied Japanese language education as a heritage language. \nAnyone who lives in Canada and is interested is welcome to attend. We especially look forward to students’ participation. Did he see a ghost? Things get even stranger when he shows up to school the next day to see the very same figure sitting in his classroom. No one else thinks it’s weird\, and\, even though Kazu doesn’t remember ever seeing her before\, they all seem convinced that the ghost-girl Akari has been their friend for years! \nWhen Kazu’s summer project to learn about Kimyo Temple draws the meddling attention of his mysterious neighbor Ms. Minakami and his secretive new classmate Akari\, Kazu soon learns that not everything is as it seems in his hometown. Kazu discovers that Kimyo Temple is linked to a long forgotten legend about bringing the dead to life\, which could explain Akari’s sudden appearance—is she a zombie or a ghost? Kazu and Akari join forces to find and protect the source of the temple’s power. An unfinished story in a magazine from Akari’s youth might just hold the key to keeping Akari in the world of the living\, and it’s up to them to find the story’s ending and solve the mystery as the adults around them conspire to stop them from finding the truth. \n\nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nKASHIWABA Sachiko is a prolific writer of children’s and young adult fantasy whose career spans more than four decades. Her works have garnered the prestigious Sankei\, Shogakukan\, and Noma children’s literature awards\, and her novel The Marvelous Village Veiled in Mist influenced Hayao Miyazaki’s film Spirited Away. SUMMARY:The Ainu Films of HIMEDA Tadayoshi
DESCRIPTION:The Japan Foundation\, Toronto is proud to present three films from the late pioneering filmmaker\, HIMEDA Tadayoshi. These documentaries have rarely been shown outside of Japan and are of immense ethnological importance. \nDuring the 1970s and 1980s\, Director Himeda created a series of films in close collaboration with the late Ainu trailblazer KAYANO Shigeru. Mister Kayano was the first Ainu to sit in the Japanese parliament and one of the last native speakers of the Ainu language. For those who watched our screening of Ainu: Indigenous People of Japan\, you may remember one of the elders of the film\, KAYANO Reiko\, who is the wife of the late KAYANO Shigeru. \nSpecial thanks to Mr. HIMEDA Ran (son of Director Himeda) for all of your support! \nDon’t miss the special presentation with Dr. Marcos Centeno (Birbeck\, University of London) as he shines a light on the historic\, ethnological\, and artistic significance of HIMEDA Tadayoshi’s documentaries. This presentation serves as a perfect introduction to Director Himeda’s films. \nAll three films will be available online North America-wide from:\nFriday\, September 2 – Sunday\, September 4 \n\n \nChise-a-Kar -We Build A House- • チセアカラ －われら家つくる－ \nDirected by HIMEDA Tadayoshi • 1974 • Documentary •  57 min. • Presented in Ainu with English subtitles\nOnline Film Screening (North America only) • Admission Free • RSVP Required (register below) \nThis film centers on the construction of a traditional style house\, their houses being not only very distinctive but also figuring prominently in religious ritual. The houses were rectangular and pole-framed\, thatched with Miscanthus or bamboo-leaf; the doorway was protected by a skin or woven hanging and various parts of the house\, such as the hearth and a window on the eastern side\, would serve ceremonial purposes. \n\n \nI-Omante -The Bear Ritual- • イヨマンテ －熊おくり－ \nDirected by HIMEDA Tadayoshi • 1977 • Documentary •  103 min. • Presented in English\, Japanese\, and Ainu with English subtitles\nOnline Film Screening (North America only) • Admission Free • RSVP Required (register below) \nThis film focuses on I-OMANTE ritual that is to liberate the souls of the Gods from the furs and meat and send them back to the Land of the Gods. The Ainu believed that bears were Gods. The Gods come to the Land of the Ainu\, which means “human beings”\, with meat\, furs and medicine (the gall bladders of the bears) as their gifts. \nContent Warning: Animal death as part of the bear ritual. \n\n \nWedding Ceremony of the Ainus • アイヌの結婚式 \nDirected by HIMEDA Tadayoshi • 1971 • Documentary •  33 min. • Presented in Japanese and Ainu with English subtitles\nOnline Film Screening (North America only) • Admission Free • RSVP Required (register below) \nThe documentary is a record of a marriage ceremony that took place in April 1971 and was performed in accordance with Ainu traditions at the request of the young bride. There were two hurdles to overcome in the realization of the ceremony: first\, a group of Ainu had to be convinced\, who were against a revival of the tradition. Secondly\, there were only a few members of the community who knew the details of the ceremony at all\, since most of them had already been celebrating a wedding in their own style for over 80 years. \n\nAbout HIMEDA Tadayoshi (1928-2013): \nBorn in 1928 in Kobe\, Hyogo Prefecture\, HIMEDA Tadayoshi graduated from the local business university in 1948. Six years later\, Himeda went to Tokyo and worked there in the field of modern theatre. In addition to his work as a screenwriter for television\, he studied with the ethnologist MIYAMOTO Tsuneichi. In 1976\, Himeda founded the Center for Ethnological Visual Documentation (Minzoku Bunka Eizō Kenkyujo)\, which he has headed until 2012. \nFor more than 50 years\, he has been documenting the lives and culture of the common people using visual media\, and created more than 120 films. \nHimeda and his Center are known worldwide through joint projects with the Collège de France in France\, lectures and film series at Harvard University\, and events at universities\, museums and research institutions in Europe. He has received numerous important prizes in Japan and abroad for his work. \n\nIn Conjunction With:\nReviving Ainu Lost Traditions on Screen: HIMEDA Tadayoshi’s Documentary Films \nJoin Dr. Marcos Centeno (Birbeck\, University of London) for a special presentation examining the historic and cultural significance of HIMEDA Tadayoshi’s documentary films about the Ainu people. Dr. Centeno will introduce us to the history of Ainu representation on screen\, which goes back as far as the inception of cinema. Unlike previous documentaries featuring the Ainu\, the films Director Himeda made in the 1970s alongside Ainu leader and trailblazer KAYANO Shigeru showcase a new ethnographic approach where the Ainu are not depicted as exotic nor primitive. \nThis presentation serves as a perfect introduction to our online screenings this weekend\, The Ainu Films of HIMEDA Tadayoshi. \nOnline Talk Event   \n\nRelated Programming:\nInuit Print Art and its Early Japanese Influences \nIn the mid-20th century\, a series of fortunate events led to the introduction of Japanese printmaking techniques to the Inuit community of Cape Dorset. In this talk with Dr. Norman Vorano (Queens University)\, we will hear the story of how these ancient traditions of Japan made their way to the remote Canadian arctic\, how Inuit artists built upon these traditions\, and the ways in which Inuit printmaking continues to thrive today. \nWatch Here \n\n \nAdditional Ainu Films\, Videos & Resources \nAs a follow-up to our film screenings in recognition of International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples (August 9)\, we have assembled a collection of films\, videos\, and additional resources about the Ainu people. These resources and content are available for free and we hope it encourages you to continue learning about the indigenous peoples of Japan. \nWatch Here \n\nJF OverDrive: Ebooks about indigenous peoples of Japan \nDeepen your understanding about the Ainu people and their culture by checking out ebooks on indigenous peoples of Japan before or after the film screening! Apply for a new library card or renew your expired card here. \nRead Here  \n\n

SUMMARY:Reviving Ainu Lost Traditions on Screen: HIMEDA Tadayoshi's documentary films
DESCRIPTION:Event Abstract: \nFilm representations of the Ainu people have existed since the inception of cinema but they have not remained stable over time. Ainu people were initially an object of interest for outsiders who portrayed them as “other” primitives\, isolated from the modern world. The notion of “otherness” was slightly modified in the postwar period\, when entertainment films and the tourist industry presented the new romanticized image of a “pseudo-Ainu” (giji Ainu) disconnected from their social reality and history. However\, HIMEDA Tadayoshi’s documentaries made in the 70s alongside the Ainu leader KAYANO Shigeru\, marked a significant turning point in Ainu film representation. This presentation focuses the first three films they collaborated in: The Wedding Ceremony of the Ainus (Ainu no kekkonshiki\, 1971)\, Chise a Kar -We Build A House- (Chise a kara. Warera ie o tsukuru\, 1974) and I-omante -The Bear Ritual- (Iyomante\, Kuma okuri\, 1977). It will be examined how\, unlike previous documentaries featuring the Ainu\, these films showcase a new ethnographic approach in which the Ainu are not depicted as an exotic tribe but a conventional people who are aware of their cultural assimilation. Additionally\, the presentation will explore Himeda’s innovative approach in which for the first time\, Ainu voices have a predominant role in the representation\, mainly through the dialogues with KAYANO Shigeru whose comments provide an unseen close gaze to the Ainu traditions projected on screen. – Dr. Marcos Centeno \nIn this talk\, Dr. Marcos Centeno will shine a light on the historic\, ethnological\, and artistic significance of HIMEDA Tadayoshi’s documentaries. \nRegister below to receive a link to the live presentation prior to the start of the event. \n\nSpeaker Biography: \n \nMarcos Centeno is lecturer in Media and Japanese Studies at University of Valencia and Honorary Research Fellow at Birkbeck College\, University of London\, where he was the Japanese Programme director and taught modules related to Japanese Cinema\, contemporary Japanese culture and society. He is also research associate at the SOAS University of London\, where\, he had been lecturer in Film Studies for the Department of Japan and Korea and coordinated the MA Global Cinemas and the Transcultural. His research interests revolve around Japanese documentary film\, particularly the visual representation of minorities\, transculturality and diversity. He written extensively on the film representation of the Ainu people and his full-length documentary film\, Ainu. Pathways to Memory (2014) received several prizes. He has recently coedited with Michael Raine Developments in the Japanese Documentary Mode (Arts\, 2020). and with Norimasa Morita Japanese Transnational Cinema (Mpdi 2020) and Japan beyond its Borders: Transnational Approaches to Film and Media (Seibunsha\, 2020) which resulted from the “Japanese Transnational Cinema” project funded by Sasakawa and Daiwa foundations\, Waseda and the Japanese Ministry of Education. SUMMARY:Whispering Spirits: Ghosts in the Literature of Izumi Kyōka and Book Design of Komura Settai
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the first half of the 20th century\, a time when Japanese authors looked to the West for new directions in their literary tradition\, IZUMI Kyōka (1873-1939) upheld a centuries-long tradition of telling ghost stories and tales of fantastic creatures. Ignored by the critical establishment during his lifetime due to his single-minded obsession with ghosts and monsters\, Kyōka later came to be identified as one of Japan’s most important writers. While much has been written on the ghostly quality of Kyōka’s fiction\, almost nothing has been said of the appearance of ghosts in the artwork accompanying his literature\, which was among the most extensively illustrated fiction of its time. \nImages of ghosts adorn the boxes\, covers\, frontispieces\, and endpapers of IZUMI Kyōka’s books\, particularly those created by KOMURA Settai (1887–1940)\, a pioneer of modern design in Japan. Beyond simply visualizing scenes from Kyōka’s literature\, Settai’s illustrations elaborate on the illusory quality of Kyōka’s apparitions by utilizing the space and material of the book to create optical illusions and impossible perspectives. Settai’s book designs capture the central monster of Kyōka’s literary universe: A faceless\, wandering female spirit that draws on traditions of Japanese monsters such as the nopperabō\, a smiling demon without eyes or a nose\, and the tōrima\, an evil spirit that whispers of calamity as it wanders through dark city streets. \nIn this talk\, Dr. Pedro Bassoe will shine a light on the whispering spirits of Kyōka’s books. \nRegister below to receive a link to the live presentation prior to the start of the event. A Q+A session with the audience will commence immediately following the talk.  \n\nPedro Bassoe is Assistant Professor of Japanese at Purdue University in West Lafayette\, Indiana\, where he teaches classes on Japanese literature\, film\, visual culture\, and popular media. He has published one article on Art Nouveau book design in Japan and has a forthcoming article on photography and the formation of modern Japanese literature\, as well as a forthcoming chapter on transnational narratives by contemporary women writers. He is currently working on a book manuscript titled Enchanted Images: Illustration\, Book Design\, and Visuality in the Literature of Izumi Kyōka\, which explores the role of visual art and print media in the work of Japan’s foremost writer of ghost stories and fantastic literature in the early 20th century. \n  \n  \n\nImages: Ōkoshi Hisako and Saitama Kenritsu Kindai Bijutsukan. SUMMARY:Ainu Neno An Ainu (Online Film Screening)
DESCRIPTION:Ainu Neno An Ainu • アイヌネノアンアイヌ\nFriday\, August 12\, 5:59PM – Sunday\, August 14\, 11:59PM (ET) \nDirected by Neo Sora & Laura Liverani • 2021 • Documentary • 72 min. • Presented in Japanese & Ainu with English subtitles \nOnline Film Screening (Canada only) • Admission Free • RSVP Required (register below to receive a viewing link on August 12) • Trailer \nA cinematic family photo album of a remote village in Hokkaido\, where the Ainu\, the indigenous population of northern Japan\, have kept their culture and language alive despite a history of Japanese colonization. \nAinu Neno An Ainu collects the stories of the Ainu. The film is an interwoven set of stories narrated by Maya\, a young Ainu who grew up in the remote Hokkaido village of Nibutani. As a college student Maya’s goal is to revitalize the Ainu language and culture\, making it more accessible to future generations of both Ainu and Japanese. \nMaya’s voice guides the audience as other villagers tell their stories and portray the histories of their community\, from their individual and collective journey of forced assimilation and discrimination to the revitalization of their own language and culture.
