SUMMARY:Into the Picture Scroll: The Tale of Yamanaka Tokiwa (Online Film Screening)
DESCRIPTION:Into the Picture Scroll: The Tale of Yamanaka Tokiwa 山中常盤ー牛若丸と常盤御前 母と子の物語ー\n\nInto the Picture Scroll: The Tale of Yamanaka Tokiwa\n山中常盤ー牛若丸と常盤御前 母と子の物語ー \nFriday\, July 1\, 5:59PM – Sunday\, July 3\, 11:59PM (ET)\nDirected by HANEDA Sumiko | 2005 | Documentary | 100 minutes | Japanese with English subtitles\nOnline Film Screening (Canada only) | Admission Free | RSVP Required (register below to receive a viewing link before July 1) \nThis extraordinary film presents Japanese classical scroll painting as never before. The Yamanaka Tokiwa comprises twelve scrolls painted by IWASA Matabei some 400 years ago. It tells the then-famous puppet theater story of Lady Tokiwa\, who is murdered by bandits in Yamanaka on her way to visit her samurai son. Learning of her fate from her ghost\, the son sets out to avenge her death. With skillful framing\, rhythmic pacing\, and a newly composed joruri score (ballad singing with shamisen accompaniment)\, HANEDA Sumiko has created a stirring cinematic work from a static painting that is one of Japan’s cultural treasures. \n     \n\n \nAbout HANEDA Sumiko\nBorn in 1926\, in Dalian\, China (then Manchuria\, under Japanese occupation)\, Haneda started her career with Iwanami Productions\, a company producing educational films\, where she would make her first films about the arts\, education\, and nature. In 1976 she directed her first independent film\, The Cherry Tree with Gray Blossoms\, a personal project she had worked on for many years. She made films about folkloric dances and changing rural traditions (Ode to Mt. Hayachine\, 1982)\, portraits of aging artists such as Akiko-Portrait of a Dancer (1985) or the monumental Kabuki Actor Kataoke Nizaimon (1992-1996). Haneda led a prolific career directing over 80 films and receiving widespread recognition for her work on welfare politics and caring for the elderly. Later in her career\, Haneda reflected upon her early life in China with films about the Japanese settlers in Manchuria such as Faraway Home – Lushun and Dalian (2011). She also participated in the creation of the Tokyo International Women’s Film Festival (1985-2012)\, the first of its kind in Japan. \n\nOnline Talk: Women Directors in Contemporary Japanese Cinema\n \nAvailable Now on the JFT Youtube Channel \nThis special presentation with Dr. Colleen Laird (UBC) focuses on the emergence of women directors in early 21st century Japanese cinema industries. In this talk\, Dr. Laird introduces prominent directors who have been successful in both domestic and international markets\, and she discusses the various factors that supported a new career pathway for women in film\, as well as ongoing barriers that pose difficulties for continued success.  Presented in English. \nWatch Here \n

SUMMARY:Inuit Print Art and Its Early Japanese Influences
DESCRIPTION:In the mid-20th century\, a series of fortunate events led to the introduction of Japanese printmaking techniques to the Inuit community of Cape Dorset. In this talk with Dr. Norman Vorano (Queens University)\, we will hear the story of how these ancient traditions of Japan made their way to the remote Canadian arctic\, how Inuit artists built upon these traditions\, and the ways in which Inuit printmaking continues to thrive today. \nThe talk will be immediately followed by a Q+A session with the speaker.\n\nNorman Vorano\, a professor of art history at Queen’s University\, is a scholar and curator of North American Indigenous Art. He has curated internationally touring exhibition of Inuit art\, including Inuit Prints\, Japanese Inspiration: Early Printmaking in the Canadian Arctic and Picturing Arctic Modernity: North Baffin Drawings from 1964. Our aim is that this “Reference Collection” will be useful in both synchronous and asynchronous online classes through bringing together useful digital resources\, videos\, etc. that can be used with the Marugoto textbooks. \nThis current project will target materials to use with Marugoto Pre-Intermediate (A2/B1). Topics/sections of the textbook will be divided amongst the project members\, and each group or person will create a “Resource Collection” for the section they are tasked with. Examples of materials are convenient websites used by the project members or self-made teaching materials. Something made specifically for this project is also welcome! We hope that this can be an opportunity for teachers to bring together useful resources they can use in their own classrooms. The final collection will also be shared on our website so it can be used by everyone. \nOn June 25 we will have a session to explain the outline of the project before we ask individuals to confirm their participation\, so please feel free to join us if you are interested. \nWe look forward to meeting teachers interested in joining our Maruguto Teaching Material Project! \nDate and Time: \n\nProject outline explanation\, project member decision\nDate: Saturday\, June 25th\, 2022         1:00pm – 2:30pm (Eastern time)\nPlease check here for the time in your area.\n*Participation as a project member is not mandatory\, so feel free to join us if you are interested.\nDocument collection presentation\nDate: Saturday\, August 6th\, 2022        1:00pm – 3:00pm (Eastern time)\n*End time is subject to change.\n\nAbout Marugoto: https://www.marugoto.org/about/ \nTarget learners: adults\, university students\, etc. \nCollected Resource Sample: \n\nIntermediate 1 Topic 1: https://bit.ly/3PrDzlt\nMarugoto Teaching Material Project Collection of Materials:\n\nhttps://tr.jpf.go.jp/language/resources/teacher/marugoto-materials-collection/ \nEligibility: For both 1. and 2. participation is restricted to Japanese-language teachers residing in Canada. \nJFT staff: Yuiko Goya\, Noriko Saito \nContact: Noriko Saito nsaito@jftor.org

Saeki asks to meet up with Keito\, who has grown up struggling with his memory of the incident. However\, on the evening of their meeting\, Keito finds that a familiar call girl has been killed in his room… \n \n\nSunday\, June 5\, 12:30 PM – Wednesday\, June 8\, 11:59 PM (ET) | Register Here \nTune in for an exclusive interview with novelist NAKAMURA Fuminori as part of the Toronto International Festival of Author’s inaugural MOTIVE Crime & Mystery Festival. \nWhat motivates a killer? Is everyone capable of a crime as heinous as murder? Award-winning Japanese author Fuminori Nakamura’s latest book\, My Annihilation (translated by Sam Bett)\, gets to the crux of these queries in a deeply revealing and disturbingly honest examination of the psychological motives of a killer. Nakamura’s creative\, puzzling narrative style makes it nearly impossible to discern what is truth and what is fabrication\, until the very end. Trust no one when reading – not even yourself. Join a master of literary noir in this fascinating look into the darkest corners of human consciousness. This virtual event will be presented in Japanese with English captions.

SUMMARY:Parallel Worlds: Translating for Young Minds
DESCRIPTION:Registration period is now over.\nPlease Click Here to Watch a Recording of the Talk \n\n\nParallel Worlds: Translators Behind the Scenes\nOn the other side of every book in translation is a translator connecting the two different cultures\, bringing not only the words of that parallel world into English\, but also its thoughts\, values\, and viewpoints. In this series of discussions\, we talk to translators of literary fiction\, manga\, genre fiction\, and children’s literature to tease out the challenges and thrills of bringing a wide variety of Japanese works to English readers. \n\nParallel Worlds: Translating for Young Minds\nInterview with translators Avery Fischer Udagawa and Cathy Hirano\, moderated by Jeff Chiba Stearns \nDate: Thursday\, March 3\, 2022\nTime: 8:00 PM (ET)\nVenue: Online \nJoin us for a behind-the-scenes conversation with veterans of Japanese and Canadian children’s/YA literature. Animator and author Jeff Chiba Stearns (Yellow Sticky Notes\, On Being Yukiko) sits down with Avery Fischer Udagawa (Temple Alley Summer) and Cathy Hirano (The Beast Player) to discuss the specific challenges of localizing Japanese culture and language for a younger\, English-speaking readership. How do translators approach differing cultural taboos? What assumptions must be made about the reader’s prior knowledge or lack thereof? If illustrations are present\, how do translators corroborate the text with the visual narrative? Come find out the answers to these questions – and more – in this last of our Parallel Worlds series. \nAvery Fischer Udagawa and Cathy Hirano’s translated works are now available to borrow from JFT’s OverDrive Library! Borrow these great reads anywhere from Canada as long as you have a JFT library card (apply online today!).  \n  \n\nAbout Avery Fischer Udagawa \nAvery Fischer Udagawa’s translations of children’s literature from Japanese include the 2022 Mildred L.
