SUMMARY:Parallel Worlds: Translating Genres
DESCRIPTION:Parallel Worlds: Translators Behind the Scenes\nOn the other side of every book in translation is a translator connecting the two different cultures\, bringing not only the words of that parallel world into English\, but also its thoughts\, values\, and viewpoints. In this series of discussions\, we talk to translators of literary fiction\, manga\, genre fiction\, and children’s literature to tease out the challenges and thrills of bringing a wide variety of Japanese works to English readers. \n\nParallel Worlds: Translating Genres from Japan\nDate: Thursday\, August 26\, 2021\nTime: 8:00 PM (ET)\nPanelists: Takami Nieda and Emily Balistrieri\nModerator: Rachel Cordasco\nVenue: Online \n  \nCrime\, science fiction\, fantasy\, romance\, horror… Genre fiction is big business in English\, but what about in Japanese? So how do they navigate this publishing niche to bring us the best of Japanese genre fiction? What are some of the specific challenges they face in translating these fantastical worlds into English? Join us as we talk to leading genre translators and learn what lies behind the curtain. \nWriter\, translator and editor Rachel Cordasco (Out of This World\, SFinT Translation.com) goes on a deep dive with acclaimed translators Takami Nieda (Cage of Zeus\, Noble V: Greylancer) and Emily Balistrieri (Kiki’s Delivery Service\, The Night is Short\, Walk On Girl) to bring us the real story. \nWatch here >  \n \nWe love to hear your feedback!!   Feedback \n  \n\n \nAbout Takami Nieda \nBorn in New York City\, Takami Nieda was formerly assistant professor at Sophia University in Tokyo\, and currently teaches writing and translation at Seattle Central College in the U.S. She has translated more than ten works from Japanese into English and has received numerous grants and residencies in support of her translations\, including the PEN/Heim Translation Fund. SUMMARY:JFT Book Club Online: Heaven by Mieko Kawakami\, moderated by Kris Kosaka

To get a new library card or to renew your existing card\, please follow the instructions found here. \nThe event will be moderated by guest writer Kris Kosaka. \n  \nJFT Library Book Club will be conducted through Zoom. Instead of resisting\, the boy chooses to suffer in complete resignation. The only person who understands what he is going through is a female classmate who suffers similar treatment at the hands of her tormentors. \nThese raw and realistic portrayals of bullying are counterbalanced by textured exposition of the philosophical and religious debates concerning violence to which the weak are subjected. \n\nWriter Kris Kosaka moved to Japan in 1996 to accept a position teaching high school English at an international school. She fell in love with the country and soon met her future husband\, Makoto. They made their home in Kamakura\, where Kris continued teaching and writing while raising their two children. Although temporarily in Tampa\, FL (her hometown) while their daughter completes her high school education in the States\, Kris’s heart is in Japan. In her spare time\, Kris enjoys reading and running. Kris is a frequent contributor to The Japan Times\, and a regular columnist for their Books pages. \n\nPrevious Book Clubs\n\nJFT Book Club Online: Manga – June 10\, 2021 \n\nJFT Book Club Online: Bring Your Own Book – April 8\, 2021 \n\nJFT Book Club Online: The Memory Police – February 11\, 2021 \n\nJFT Book Club Online: Breasts and Egg – November 5\, 2020 \n\nJFT Book Club Online: Travel Japan – August 20\, 2020 \n\nJFT Book Club Online – June 11\, 2020 \n\n\nMemoirs of a Polar Bear – February 20\, 2020 \n\nThe Little House – December 12\, 2019 \n\nMystery Book Club – October 10\, 2019 \n\nMovies and Books – August 8\, 2019 \n\n\nBooks and Tea – June 6\, 2019

Our aim is that this “Reference Collection” will be useful in both synchronous and asynchronous online classes through bringing together useful digital resources\, videos\, etc. that can be used with the Marugoto textbooks. \nThis current project will target materials to use with Marugoto Intermediate 2 B1\, specifically. Topics/sections of the textbook will be divided amongst the project members\, and each group or person will create a “Resource Collection” for the section they are tasked with. Examples of materials are convenient websites used by the project members or self-made teaching materials. Something made specifically for this project is also welcome! We hope that this can be an opportunity for teachers to bring together useful resources they can use in their own classrooms. The final collection will also be shared on our website so it can be used by everyone in the future. \nOn June 26 we will have a session to explain the outline of the project before we ask individuals to confirm their participation\, so please feel free to join us if you are interested. \nWe look forward to meeting teachers interested in joining our Maruguto Teaching Material Project! \nDate and Time: \n1.
