SUMMARY:JFT Book Club Online: Heaven by Mieko Kawakami\, moderated by Kris Kosaka
DESCRIPTION:For the upcoming JFT Book Club Online\, we will discuss Heaven (ヘヴン) written by Mieko Kawakami\, the highly-acclaimed author of Breasts and Eggs (夏物語). \nThursday\,  August 12\, 2021 @ 4:00PM – 5:00PM (EDT) \nHeaven by Mieko Kawakami is available for circulation on JFT OverDrive.  \nSign in with your library card to borrow or to place a hold. To get a new library card or to renew your existing card\, please follow the instructions found here. \nThe event will be moderated by guest writer Kris Kosaka. \n  \nJFT Library Book Club will be conducted through Zoom. Please email the library at library@jftor.org to reserve your seat.\nPrior to the meeting\, an email will be sent to you with a website link and log-in password to enter the online Zoom meeting.\nPlease be aware that space may be limited. \nIf you have any questions or concerns\, please don’t hesitate to contact us via email. \nThank you for participating! \n\n  \nHeaven by Mieko Kawakami\nEuropa Editions\, 2021 \nA bold foray into new literary territory\, Kawakami’s novel is told in the voice of a 14-year-old student subjected to relentless torment for having a lazy eye. Instead of resisting\, the boy chooses to suffer in complete resignation. The only person who understands what he is going through is a female classmate who suffers similar treatment at the hands of her tormentors. \nThese raw and realistic portrayals of bullying are counterbalanced by textured exposition of the philosophical and religious debates concerning violence to which the weak are subjected. \n\nWriter Kris Kosaka moved to Japan in 1996 to accept a position teaching high school English at an international school. She fell in love with the country and soon met her future husband\, Makoto. They made their home in Kamakura\, where Kris continued teaching and writing while raising their two children. Although temporarily in Tampa\, FL (her hometown) while their daughter completes her high school education in the States\, Kris’s heart is in Japan. In her spare time\, Kris enjoys reading and running. Kris is a frequent contributor to The Japan Times\, and a regular columnist for their Books pages. \n\nPrevious Book Clubs\n\nJFT Book Club Online: Manga – June 10\, 2021 \n\nJFT Book Club Online: Bring Your Own Book – April 8\, 2021 \n\nJFT Book Club Online: The Memory Police – February 11\, 2021 \n\nJFT Book Club Online: Breasts and Egg – November 5\, 2020 \n\nJFT Book Club Online: Travel Japan – August 20\, 2020 \n\nJFT Book Club Online – June 11\, 2020 \n\n\nMemoirs of a Polar Bear – February 20\, 2020 \n\nThe Little House – December 12\, 2019 \n\nMystery Book Club – October 10\, 2019 \n\nMovies and Books – August 8\, 2019 \n\n\nBooks and Tea – June 6\, 2019

Our aim is that this “Reference Collection” will be useful in both synchronous and asynchronous online classes through bringing together useful digital resources\, videos\, etc. that can be used with the Marugoto textbooks. \nThis current project will target materials to use with Marugoto Intermediate 2 B1\, specifically. Topics/sections of the textbook will be divided amongst the project members\, and each group or person will create a “Resource Collection” for the section they are tasked with. Examples of materials are convenient websites used by the project members or self-made teaching materials. Something made specifically for this project is also welcome! We hope that this can be an opportunity for teachers to bring together useful resources they can use in their own classrooms. The final collection will also be shared on our website so it can be used by everyone in the future. \nOn June 26 we will have a session to explain the outline of the project before we ask individuals to confirm their participation\, so please feel free to join us if you are interested. \nWe look forward to meeting teachers interested in joining our Maruguto Teaching Material Project! \nDate and Time: \n1.
