In a deadly game of hide and seek\, malicious netizens unsatisfied with the young suspect in custody expose the family’s personal information\, as well as their every move. \nCaptivating to watch\, this film by Ryoichi Kimizuka (screenwriter of the Bayside Shakedown films) reflects the current fears over the perils of social media and privacy\, but also deftly weaves a story about the brokenness of modern-day families. He takes elements of Japanese culture that he is inspired by\, and brings it back with him to Rome and becomes hugely successful\, which leads the Emperor to command him to build a massive spa. \nThermae Romae is based on the adaptation of Mari Yamazaki‘s award winning manga\, which has won both the 2010 Manga Taisho and the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize for Best Short Work. As a hardened warrior who rises savagely to power\, Toshiro Mifune gives a remarkable\, animalistic performance\, as does Isuzu Yamada as his ruthless wife. Throne of Blood fuses classical Western tragedy with formal elements taken from Noh theater to create an unforgettable cinematic experience. \nDespite the change in setting and language and numerous creative liberties\, Throne of Blood often is considered one of the better film adaptations of the play. When a famous samurai chef from Kaga observes Haru’s culinary abilities\, he has a brilliant idea. The Funaki family\, who have served the Lord of Kaga for generations\, are known as “kitchen samurai” for their innovative dishes. However\, the heir to the family business\, Yasunobu\, shows little aptitude for or interest in cuisine. In order to save the Funaki family name and their reputation as kitchen samurai\, Haru agrees to marry Yasunobu and teach him the art of cooking. But will he be a willing student of this independent and opinionated new sensei? \nKAGA CUISINE \nThis story was inspired by a real-life family in Kaga that survived countless historical upheavals with its cuisine. DESCRIPTION:presented The Japan Foundation in cooperation with the Hamilton Public Library \nThis drama by award-winning director Yuya Ishii (The Great Passage) is based on the true story of the Vancouver Asahi\, a Japanese-Canadian baseball team that was established in 1914 and rose to prominence in 1920s and 1930s. Playing a strategic game\, dubbed “brain ball\,” they used their unique strengths to defeat their larger and stronger European-Canadian opponents. Despite  success and popularity\, the Asahi faced discrimination and\, during WWII\, internment due to their Japanese heritage. The Vancouver Asahi won the People’s Choice Award at the 2014 Vancouver International Film Festival\, and screened at the 2015 Toronto Japanese Film Festival. \nDirected by Yuya Ishii\n2014\, 132 minutes \n

Kids Police\, a satire of the hardboiled cop film genre\, finds veteran police detectives fighting crime while attending grade school after a poison gas turns them into children. The documentary The God of Ramen shows one man’s commitment to his art and community through his tireless work in his ramen shop. Schoolgirl Arashi has a question she wants to ask her best friend\, with whom she had a falling out. Businessman Tsuchiya continues to wait for his girlfriend\, who disappeared right after he proposed to her. \nThe Connector in this story is an ordinary high school student\, Ayumi\, who is being trained as an apprentice by his grandmother\, also a Connector. As Ayumi arranges their meetings\, he begins to question himself. His doubts are soon directed towards the mysterious deaths of his own parents. Is it self-serving  to want to meet with the deceased? Do the living really benefit from such meetings? Will it change their lives? And as for the deceased…… \n  \n  \n  \n
