In 1995\, his debut feature Maborosi won the Venice Film Festival Golden Osella\, as well as several other awards\, which established his international reputation. His next film After Life (1999) won the Grand Prize at the Nantes Three Continents Festival\, as well as an award from the Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema. The film became a big hit\, securing a release in 30 countries.  \nIn 2004\, Nobody Knows was In Competition at Cannes\, where lead actor YAGIRA Yuya became the youngest-ever recipient of the Best Male Actor Award. In 2009\, he broke new ground\, making GODA Yoshiie’s short stories into the movie Air Doll\, which screened at Cannes in Un Certain Regard\, as well as international film festivals in Toronto\, Chicago and Rotterdam. Setting his later version in a seaside location\, Ozu otherwise preserves the details of his elegantly simple plot wherein an aging actor returns to a small town with his troupe and reunites with his former lover and illegitimate son\, a scenario that enrages his current mistress and results in heartbreak for all. Together\, the films offer a unique glimpse into the evolution of one of cinema’s greatest directors. A Story of Floating Weeds reveals Ozu in the midst of developing his mode of expression; Floating Weeds reveals his distinct style at its pinnacle. SUMMARY:Film Screening: The Little House 小さいおうち
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special and rare screening of the Japanese drama The Little House (小さいおうち)\, based on the book of the same name\, by Kyoko Nakajima\, and directed by Yoji Yamada. Set in Japan in the 1930s and 1940s\, the story introduces Taki Nunomiya\, an elderly woman and former housemaid\, looking back on her golden years. The narrative that follows delivers striking stories of love and human connections during a time of war\, spanning from Yamagata to Tokyo. The film stars Haru Kuroki\, who won the Silver Bear for Best Actress in this film at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival.
