Tickets are non-refundable.\n– Tickets available May 13.\nClick here to purchase tickets online or call JCCC here: 416.441.2345\nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto presents AGA-SHIO\, a Piano and Tsugaru Shamisen duo that blend the passionate energy of Japanese folk music together with contemporary music\, creating an entirely new form of Japanese music. \nThe unit “AGA-SHIO” was formed by Hiromitsu Agatsuma and Satoru Shionoya aiming at fusing eastern and western instruments; Tsugaru Shamisen -a Japanese traditional 3 strings’ lute- and piano. \n\nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\n\n\n\nHiromitsu Agatsuma \nShamisen Player \nHiromitsu Agatsuma began playing the Tsugaru-shamisen at age six. He won in numerous competitions\, becoming a renowned performer in the traditional Japanese music scene since his youth. His reputation grew as he incorporated genres such as jazz and rock into his music\, and made his major debut in 2001. \n\nShowMore on Hiromitsu Agatsuma here \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nSatoru Shionoya \nPianist/Composer/Producer \nSatoru Shionoya studied music composition at Tokyo University of the Arts. While he was still a student he started his 10 year career as the pianist of the Japanese salsa band Orquesta De La Luz (1986-1996). The group won the United Nations Peace Medal in 1993 and was a U.S. Grammy Award nominee in 1995. DESCRIPTION:The JCCC and Nagata Shachu are proud to present Japanese dance and taiko artist Chieko Kojima. \nA founding member and principal dancer of the world renowned Kodo drummers of Sado Island\, Kojima also has an active solo career that is perhaps best characterized by her ongoing project\, “Yukiai\,” where she seeks out new encounters and collaborations with artists and taiko groups within Japan and throughout the world. SUMMARY:Rakugo—Japanese Traditional Storytelling Performance
DESCRIPTION:co-presented by the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre and the Japan Foundation\, Toronto\nsubtitled in English\nGet ready to laugh this February! The Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre will host a “Rakugo-kai” with veteran Rakugo star Yanagiya Sankyo. \nHe became an apprentice to Yanagiya Kosan V and received the high shin’uchi rank in 1981. A gifted performer\, he is famous for his ability to portray the subtlest emotions of a character during a performance. \nIn rakugo\, a lone storyteller in traditional garb sits on stage. Using only a paper fan (sensu) and a small cloth (tenugui) as props\, and without standing up from the seiza sitting position\, the rakugo artist depicts a long and complicated comical story. The story always involves the dialogue of two or more characters\, the difference between the characters depicted only through change in pitch\, tone\, and a slight turn of the head.  Absolutely fascinating and guaranteed to leave you laughing. \n江戸時代から続く日本の伝統芸能の一つである落語。来年2017年 2月12日（日）に柳家さん喬師匠とお弟子さんの柳家喬之助さんを お招きして落語会が開催されます。さん喬師匠は近年より落語を通 して外国人に日本語と日本文化を紹介する活動を続けられていま す。まだまだ、寒さが続く2月、その寒さを笑いで吹き飛ばしましょう。 \nTickets: (416) 441-2345
