SUMMARY:Short Films of the Ainu
DESCRIPTION:Short Films of the Ainu\nStreaming Canada-wide: Wednesday\, August 16\, 6:00PM – Saturday\, August 26\, 11:59PM (ET) \nIn recognition of International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples on August 9\, the Japan Foundation\, Toronto is delighted to present a selection of rare short films that explore the Ainu language\, history\, canoe-making\, sake\, and modern life.  \nThese documentary shorts were made by filmmakers who are connected with the Ainu communities of Hokkaido in northern Japan\, also known as Ainumosir (アイヌモシㇼ)\, meaning “the land of the Ainu” or “the quiet earth where humans dwell.” While the films present contrasting perspectives of the historic and the contemporary\, to show important traditions as well as modern Ainu lives\, there are themes of ethnography\, preservation\, and survival that bind all of them. \nAll films are presented in Japanese and Ainu with English subtitles. Free admission. Register below.  \n\n\n\n\n\nHappy Ainu \nDirected by YAMADA Yuichiro • 2020 • Documentary / Indigenous • 10:45 • Presented in Japanese and Ainu with English subtitles \nThe Ainu are the indigenous people of Hokkaido. With no one speaking or learning it as their mother tongue anymore\, the Ainu language is in danger of disappearing. Under such circumstances\, 21-year-old university student SEKINE Maya uses YouTube to deliver Ainu language course. Her father\, Kenji\, on the other hand\, has worked hard to revive the Ainu language for many years as a teacher\, but he is originally from Hyogo Prefecture and not ethnically Ainu. Although they have worked together with reconstructing the Ainu language\, Maya and Kenji’s different approaches to identity and cultural preservation have clashed since Maya’s childhood.\n\n\n\nTONOTO Kamuy\, a Spirit of Sake \nDirected by KAYANO Shiro • 1992 • Documentary / Indigenous • 20:25 • Presented in Japanese and Ainu with English subtitles \nThis film is about making tonoto\, a traditional fermented drink. Tonoto is used in spiritual ceremonies by the Ainu\, an indigenous people in northern Japan. Filmmaker KAYANO Shiro records his parents making tonoto in their home. He has also captured the ritual when a new cise\, an Ainu traditional house\, is built. This is KAYANO Shiro’s first piece of work as a filmmaker. TONOTO Kamuy has received an award from the Shimonaka Foundation.\n\n\n\nrametokkor yan \nDirected by YAMADA Yuichiro • 2019 • Documentary / Indigenous • 10:35 • Presented in Japanese and Ainu with English subtitles \nIn 2009\, UNESCO said that Ainu Language is critically endangered. Today\, none speaks Ainu as a mother language. Kenji SEKINE\, an Ainu language instructor\, tries to make Ainu language alive and teaches it to the children in Nibutani\, Hokkaido. However\, he is not Ainu. 20 years ago\, he just happened to visit Nibutani while he was traveling all around Japan. He met Maki there and married her the following year. After 20 years\, he has become one of the most important people for the revival of the Ainu language.\n\n\n\nLanguage is the Proof of People — A Story about Canoe-Making \nDirected by KAYANO Shiro • 1993 • Documentary / Indigenous • 21:28 • Presented in Japanese and Ainu with English subtitles \nThis film documents the process of making a cip\, a traditional canoe made and used by the Ainu\, the indigenous people of northern Japan. Nowadays\, no Ainu people uses a cip in daily life to hunt fish or travel. Therefore\, few people know how to make a cip. This film centers on two men making a canoe\, and it is one of the most important Ainu records because these two men in have now passed away. The director also included a recording made in 1967 of an elderly native Ainu speaker telling a traditional story about a canoe. \nThe film premiered at the Yamagata International Documentary Festival in 1993. \n\n\n\n\n \nNotes from Director KAYANO Shiro: \nThe director’s father\, KAYANO Shigeru (1926-2006)\, was one of the last native speakers of the Ainu language\, and a leader of the Ainu’s ethnic movement in Japan in the 1990s. He wrote over 100 books about Ainu culture and language and recorded traditional stories which were passed down only orally. He was also famous for being the first Ainu politician in the Japanese Diet. His effort led to the enactment of a law to promote Ainu culture in1997\, and this led to the law in 2019\, which categorized the Ainu as indigenous people in Japan for the first time in history. \nShiro inherited his father’s legacy and has been leading the Nibutani Language Class as well as FM Pipausi\, the first Ainu community radio station. FM Piapusi has broadcast over 260 shows since 2001.\n \n \nDirector Biography – YAMADA Yuichiro: \nYAMADA Yuichiro is a filmmaker based in Hokkaido\, Japan. After graduating from the graduate school of the University at Buffalo\, the State University of New York in 2010\, he started “Yamada Art Film” in Japan. He is involved in video production for educational institutions and local governments\, and creates short documentaries. In 2018\, he received the Hokkaido Director’s Award at the Sapporo International Short Film Festival. In 2021\, he won the Director of the Year award in the Yahoo! Japan Creators Program\, and in the following year\, 2022\, he received the Docs for SDGs Award at Tokyo Docs. \n\nRelated Programming: \n \nFilmmakers Conversation: Short Films of the Ainu\nNow available on the JFT Youtube Channel \nIn conjunction with our online film program\, Short Films of the Ainu\, we invite you to join us for a special conversation about the preservation of Ainu culture\, family\, language\, and identity\, through the lens of documentary filmmaking. She subsequently lived in Japan for several years before moving with her family to Cairo\, Egypt\, where she spent four of her elementary school years. The male protagonist’s early life in her novel Saraba! (So Long!) roughly parallels her own. At 25 she began writing fiction\, and made her literary debut in 2004 with the short story collection Aoi (Blue). In 2006 she won the Oda Sakunosuke Prize for her novel Tsūtenkaku (Tower to Heaven)\, and in 2012 she received the Kawai Hayao Prize for the novel Fukuwarai (Funny Face). Her monumental 2014 novel Saraba!\, in which the action roves across all of the places where she has lived\, from Iran to Egypt and Osaka to Tokyo\, garnered her the prestigious Naoki Prize. Nishi’s forthright portrayals of the alienation experienced by characters with strong personalities have gained her a wide following\, especially among young readers. She is also known as an avid fan of professional wrestling. \n  \nABOUT THE TRANSLATOR\nAllison Markin Powell has been awarded grants from English PEN and the NEA\, and the 2020 PEN America Translation Prize for The Ten Loves of Nishino by Hiromi Kawakami. Although temporarily in Tampa\, FL (her hometown) while their daughter completes her high school education in the States\, Kris’s heart is in Japan. SUMMARY:Healthy Hakko: Part 1 Talk with Dr. Rath and Dr. de St. Maurice
DESCRIPTION:Sushi and miso soup are often served together in Japanese restaurants. But what does sushi have to do with fermented food? What other uses are there for miso aside from making soup? In this first part of our Healthy Hakko series\, Dr. Greg de St. Maurice (Keio University) and Dr. Eric Rath (University of Kansas) sit down to discuss the little-known history of fermented sushi\, regional variations of miso\, and the gastronomical possibilities of these foods today. \n\nThis talk is a pre-recorded event. Register below to receive a private link to view the talk during the event dates.\n\n\n \nGreg de St. Maurice is tenured Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Business and Commerce at Keio University. He also serves as Vice President of the Association for the Study of Food and Society (ASFS). He received his Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Pittsburgh in 2015. His key research interests include globalization\, taste\, “place” and place brands\, culinary heritage and local foodways\, and Japan. The focus of his recent research is the dynamism of local foodways and agricultural systems in the context of globalization. SUMMARY:Re-engineering Reproductive Futures in Japanese Science Fiction
DESCRIPTION:Scholars and pundits of contemporary Japan regularly note statistics that point to an alarming downturn in population growth (shōshi kōreika). The forecast of population decline has led to a renewed focus on “reproductive futurism\,” which is the belief that humans must reproduce to ensure a stable future. In Japan\, female science fiction and speculative fiction writers have offered provocative critiques of reproductive futurism in order to resist discourse pertaining to reproductive family structures and sexuality. \nIn this talk\, we will look at how these authors use nonhuman perspectives and entities such as aliens\, cyborgs\, and bioengineered entities to defamiliarize the familiar images of reproduction\, sexuality\, and ideal family structure produced by contemporary Japanese social discourse. The talk will explore specific cases of how these female authors re-engineer alternative futures of reproductive bodies and reproductive family to critique the extant reproductive heterosexual and patriarchal family system. \n\nThis is an exclusively online event. Prior registration is required. A secure link to the lecture will be sent to the registered email address before the start of the event.\n\n\nDr. Kazue Harada is an Assistant Professor of Japanese in the Department of German\, Russian\, Asian\, and Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures\, at Miami University\, Ohio. She studied at the University of British Columbia and Washington University in St. Louis. Her research interest is modern and contemporary Japanese literature\, with a focus on the exploration of gender and sexuality via speculative and science fiction. She is currently working on a book manuscript titled Re-engineering (Re)productive Futures: Sexuality\, Mother\, and Kinship in Japanese Speculative Fiction. Her articles have appeared in U.S.-Japan Women’s Journal and Japanese Language and Literature. She is also a former recipient of the Japanese Foundation dissertation fellowship in 2012.

SUMMARY:The Many Lives of a Japanese Classic
DESCRIPTION:The large corpus of literary works by accomplished and highly educated women writers that emerged during the Heian period (794–1185) in Japan played an important role in the creation of a national literary tradition. Despite their seeming timelessness\, these texts have elicited severe criticism and received intense praise over the centuries. Although written over a thousand years ago\, they continue to inform contemporary cultural production. \nThis talk considers the fixed images of Japanese women writers of the distant past and the constructed nature of their writing focusing on one text\, The Pillow Book (Makura no sōshi\, early 11th c.). It examines interpretations of the work and images of its author Sei Shōnagon (964?–after 1027) that emerged in the years between the 17th century and the early 20th century and shows that although they were not shaped through references to historical documents and direct interactions with The Pillow Book\, these views still linger in contemporary scholarship and popular culture. \n\nThis is an exclusively online event. Prior registration is required. A secure link to the lecture will be sent to the registered email address before the start of the event.\n\n\nDr. Gergana Ivanova is Associate Professor of Japanese Literature and Culture at the University of Cincinnati. She holds a Ph.D. in Asian Studies from the University of British Columbia. From 2010-2011\, she carried out research at Sophia University\, Tokyo\, as a Japan Foundation Fellow. Her research interests include the reception history of Japanese classical literature\, early modern erotic and didactic literature\, and present-day manga representations of the past. She is the author of Unbinding the Pillow Book: The Many Lives of a Classic (Columbia University Press\, 2018). Her current book project examines the eroticization of eleventh-century women writers in early modern Japan. She is also completing a co-translation of One Hundred Exemplary Women\, One Poem Each (Retsujo hyakunin isshu\, 1847).
