SUMMARY:JFT Book Club (Hybrid): Sakura by NISHI Kanako
DESCRIPTION:For the upcoming JFT Book Club (Hybrid)\, we will discuss NISHI Kanako’s Sakura (original Japanese version: 西 加奈子著『さくら』; English translation by Allison Markin Powell). Beloved Japanese author NISHI Kanako is known for her deeply human stories about family\, identity\, and emotional resilience. Sakura\, a long-time bestseller in Japan\, is the first of her novels to be translated into English this spring. Both tender and bittersweet\, the story explores how people move forward after loss—and what holds a family together when everything falls apart. \nWhether you’re in the GTA or joining virtually from elsewhere in the world\, connect with fellow readers to share what touched you and discover new perspectives on this powerful novel that you might not have found on your own!  \nWe also have a limited number of “Observer” slots available for those who prefer to listen this time\, or for anyone curious about how a book club works without the pressure to speak. First-time participants are welcome!  \nHave you ever wished to see your family through the eyes of your dog?🐶 (Our librarian certainly has…!)  \n\n\nhttps://tr.jpf.go.jp/wp-content/uploads/Book-Club-PR-Video_Sakura_NISHIKanako.mp4\n\n \nRegister Here \n*Please be aware that space may be limited. \n*Depending on the number of participants and how the discussion goes\, we might extend the end time until 8:00 pm (EDT). This will be an exciting opportunity to connect with other book lovers from different cultural backgrounds\, find new and interesting books\, authors\, or themes\, and develop a richer understanding of Japan that you wouldn’t gain from reading alone! \n \n\nShow HOW DOES THE UPCOMING JFT BOOK CLUB WORK? \nHOW DOES THE UPCOMING JFT BOOK CLUB WORK?\n1. Once you register for the event\, you will receive guiding questions to help you think more deeply about the book. \n2. Skipping back and forth in time\, it begins when the narrator\, Kaoru\, receives a letter from his estranged father announcing he will be home in Osaka for New Year’s. The letter spurs Kaoru to go back to his childhood home\, and though he is apprehensive at returning\, his spirits are unexpectedly lifted when he is greeted by Sakura\, the family dog. \nGrowing up\, the Hasegawas were the perfect family. Kaoru’s loving parents doted on their children. Kaoru’s baby sister\, Miki\, was cute and charismatic\, and his older brother\, Hajime—a natural leader\, athlete\, and charmer—was the superstar. The middle child\, Kaoru was good at school\, but not a star student\, friendly with girls but never popular. He was content to exist in Hajime’s shadow\, and occasionally bask in his light. Then Hajime was involved in a tragic accident that fractured the Hasegawas\, with nothing to keep them together but memories and melancholy. \nReturning home\, Kaoru and his family must find the strength to reckon with the past and pick up the pieces of their shattered lives. Luckily\, there is Sakura\, who somehow has managed to stay happy. What’s her secret? As the Hasegawas learn to let go\, it is Sakura who holds the key to help them move forward. \nA major bestseller in Japan now available in English\, Sakura is a tender\, bittersweet\, funny\, and beautifully told tale about the magic and mysteries of familial love\, from one of Japan’s most acclaimed writers. \n— from Publisher’s website \n \n\nShow ABOUT THE AUTHOR & TRANSLATOR \nABOUT THE AUTHOR\n© Shingo Wakagi \nNISHI Kanako is a Japanese writer and artist. The author ISAKA Kotaro is one of Japan’s most popular mystery/thriller authors\, known for his dark wit and intricate storytelling\, and a featured guest at this year’s Toronto International Festival of Authors (TIFA). \n*We will cover both novellas in the book\, Seesaw Monster and Spin Monster. \nBlending humor\, suspense\, and social insight\, this inventive short story collection connects two seemingly different worlds: a humorous yet sharp “mother-in-law vs. daughter-in-law” domestic battle set in 1980s Japan\, and a thrilling near-future tale of AI and power struggles. Together\, they explore timeless questions about conflict\, understanding\, and coexistence. \nWhether you’re in the GTA or joining virtually from other parts of the world\, connect with fellow book lovers to explore new perspectives and share insights into the story that you might not have discovered on your own!  \nWe also have a limited number of “Observer” slots available for those wanting to listen this time\, or for anyone curious about how a book club works without the pressure to speak — first-time participants are welcome! \nP.S. Her husband has no idea about her past life as a secret agent. When she decides to use her professional skills to investigate her mother-in-law\, the delicate equilibrium of their lives is thrown wildly out of balance. Many decades after the events of Seesaw Monster\, in a future world dominated by surveillance\, facial-recognition software\, and AI\, the most sensitive information lives only on paper\, and confidential messages must be delivered by trusted couriers like Mito. SUMMARY:DIY Book Cover Making Workshop at JFT Library
DESCRIPTION:  \nWrap your book in Japan style! \nDid you know that in Japan\, when you buy a book at a bookstore\, you are often asked: “Would you like a cover?” \nThe bookstore staff will then carefully wrap your book in a perfectly fitted paper cover. These book covers (or dust covers) are more than just decoration; they protect books from scratches\, preserve their appearance\, and allow readers privacy when reading in public. On trains\, in cafés\, or in parks across Japan\, you’ll often see people reading books wrapped in these covers. \nNow\, you can experience this tradition in Toronto! Bring along a book you’d like to cover—it can be your current read or a book gift for someone special!\nYou can use paper provided at the library\, or bring your favorite wrapping paper or paper shopping bag to make it personal. \nIn Japan\, autumn is often called 「読書の秋」(dokusho no aki)—the season of reading. Let’s celebrate this season by giving your book a Japan-style handmade cover while connecting with fellow book/craft lovers! \n*Participation age: Children (around 6 years old and up) and adults are welcome to participate. \n  \nEvent Schedule\nSpaces are limited. Please RSVP to book your space.\n[Registration for this event is now full.
