DESCRIPTION:『ヒロシマ・アピールズ・グローバル・メッセージ』 ポスター展 \nSpecial thanks to\nJapan Graphic Design Association Inc.\nThe DNP Foundation for Culture Promotion\nJapan Design Committee \nIn commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki\, the entire annual series of the Hiroshima Appeals poster project is exhibited.  \nInitiated by JAGDA Hiroshima and Hiroshima International Cultural Foundation\, and currently also operated by The Hiroshima Peace Creation Fund\, the series demonstrates remarkably sustained continuity and ongoing efforts of world-wide compassion ( https://hiroshima.jagda.or.jp/appeals_about.html ). \nThe series consists of 29 posters\, headed by KAMEKURA Yūsaku’s masterpiece “Burning Butterflies” 1983\, continued with an unbroken sequence of works of high artistic excellence. \nSelected works from The Japan Foundation\, Toronto’s poster collection accompany the Hiroshima Appeals posters which share the unique nature of the design creation in being non-commercial\, abstract\, conceptual\, and focusing on global issues and subjects. \n\nAdmission: FREE \nAdvanced\, time-specific reservations are recommended. \nBook your visit here \nHand-sanitization at the entry and wearing face-coverings on our premises are recommended. \nGallery Hours: Open on Tuesdays\, Thursdays\, Fridays\, and Saturdays. DESCRIPTION:Architectural Photography Exhibition\n「構築環境-もうひとつの日本ガイド」建築写真展\nThe exhibition features 80 examples of buildings\, civil engineering works and landscapes\, etc.\, from all of the prefectures in Japan\, which are introduced through photographs\, text and video images. It presents a rarely considered aspect of Japan\, taking the built environment of the various regions of a country that is geographically diverse and often struck by natural disasters\, with the aim of examining how Japanese people have engaged and struggled with the natural environment and how they have carried on and created locality. \n日本の各都道府県に現存する建築、土木、ランドスケープなど80 点を取り上げ、写真とテキストと映像で紹介する。地理的に多様で、多くの自然災害に見舞われてきた日本において、人々が自然環境とどのように対話し格闘してきたか、どのように地域性を継承し創造してきたかという観点から、日本各地の建造物を取り上げる。従来あまり紹介されてこなかった日本の一面を紹介する、「もうひとつの日本ガイド」。 \n\nNotice: Limited Access for This Exhibition \nDue to the installation layout\, hallway space for this exhibition is limited\, which may make access challenging for wheelchair users and those with mobility equipment. DESCRIPTION:『ヒロシマ・アピールズ・グローバル・メッセージ』 ポスター展 \nSpecial thanks to\nJapan Graphic Design Association Inc.\nThe DNP Foundation for Culture Promotion\nJapan Design Committee \nIn commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki\, the entire annual series of the Hiroshima Appeals poster project is exhibited.  \nInitiated by JAGDA Hiroshima and Hiroshima International Cultural Foundation\, and currently also operated by The Hiroshima Peace Creation Fund\, the series demonstrates remarkably sustained continuity and ongoing efforts of world-wide compassion ( https://hiroshima.jagda.or.jp/appeals_about.html ). \nThe series consists of 29 posters\, headed by KAMEKURA Yūsaku’s masterpiece “Burning Butterflies” 1983\, continued with an unbroken sequence of works of high artistic excellence. \nSelected works from The Japan Foundation\, Toronto’s poster collection accompany the Hiroshima Appeals posters which share the unique nature of the design creation in being non-commercial\, abstract\, conceptual\, and focusing on global issues and subjects. \n\nAdmission: FREE \nAdvanced\, time-specific reservations are recommended. \nBook your visit here \nHand-sanitization at the entry and wearing face-coverings on our premises are recommended. \nGallery Hours: Open on Tuesdays\, Thursdays\, Fridays\, and Saturdays. DESCRIPTION:Architectural Photography Exhibition\n「構築環境-もうひとつの日本ガイド」建築写真展\nThe exhibition features 80 examples of buildings\, civil engineering works and landscapes\, etc.\, from all of the prefectures in Japan\, which are introduced through photographs\, text and video images. Known for his intricate narratives\, psychological depth\, and seamless blending of dreams and reality\, Kon created some of the most critically acclaimed anime films of the early 21st century. \nAfter graduating from Musashino Art University with a degree in visual communication design\, Kon began his career as a manga artist and scriptwriter\, eventually working as an animator under director ŌTOMO Katsuhiro (Akira). He made his directorial debut in 1997 with the psychological thriller Perfect Blue\, which quickly earned him international acclaim. Over the next decade\, Kon directed a powerful body of work that includes Millennium Actress (2001)\, Tokyo Godfathers (2003)\, Paprika (2006)\, and the television series Paranoia Agent (2004). Each of these works showcases his signature style: non-linear storytelling\, striking visual imagery\, and a fascination with identity\, memory\, and media. \nKon passed away in 2010 at the age of 46\, leaving his final project\, Dreaming Machine\, unfinished. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a lecture with Jillian Rudes\, author of Manga in Libraries and a New York-based school librarian\, as we explore what manga is\, why it matters\, and how to integrate it into library collections and educational settings. In her first talk in Canada\, she will cover the fundamentals of reading manga\, its genres\, publishers\, and age ratings\, as well as its impact on literacy and social-emotional development. She will also discuss collection development\, including essential resources\, recommended titles\, shelving strategies\, reader’s advisory\, and digital content. Whether you’re a library worker\, educator\, parent\, or manga enthusiast\, this session offers valuable insights into manga’s growing role in education and libraries. \nThe lecture will be followed by the exclusive tour of the Japan Foundation\, Toronto Library by our library staff. With the Jillian’s insights from the lecture in mind\, explore the world of 20\,000+ Japan-related books and audiovisuals\, including approx. 3\,000 manga books in collection! \n\nJillian Rudes is the founder of Manga in Libraries\, an organization that provides manga readers’ advisory lists and hosts manga webinars\, workshops\, and panels. She is also a New York State dually certified English teacher and school librarian\, currently serving as the school librarian at a grade 6–12 public school in New York City. Jillian is also the President-Elect of the American Library Association’s (ALA) Graphic Novels & Comics Round Table (GNCRT). In 2020\, she received the American Association of School Librarians’ (AASL) Collaborative School Library Award\, and in 2022\, she was honored with the American Library Association’s (ALA) Scholastic Library Publishing Award. Jillian was also recognized as the “Manga Maven” by Library Journal and selected as a Library Journal Mover & Shaker in 2022. DESCRIPTION:『ヒロシマ・アピールズ・グローバル・メッセージ』 ポスター展 \nSpecial thanks to\nJapan Graphic Design Association Inc.\nThe DNP Foundation for Culture Promotion\nJapan Design Committee \nIn commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki\, the entire annual series of the Hiroshima Appeals poster project is exhibited.  \nInitiated by JAGDA Hiroshima and Hiroshima International Cultural Foundation\, and currently also operated by The Hiroshima Peace Creation Fund\, the series demonstrates remarkably sustained continuity and ongoing efforts of world-wide compassion ( https://hiroshima.jagda.or.jp/appeals_about.html ). \nThe series consists of 29 posters\, headed by KAMEKURA Yūsaku’s masterpiece “Burning Butterflies” 1983\, continued with an unbroken sequence of works of high artistic excellence. \nSelected works from The Japan Foundation\, Toronto’s poster collection accompany the Hiroshima Appeals posters which share the unique nature of the design creation in being non-commercial\, abstract\, conceptual\, and focusing on global issues and subjects. \n\nAdmission: FREE \nAdvanced\, time-specific reservations are recommended. \nBook your visit here \nHand-sanitization at the entry and wearing face-coverings on our premises are recommended. \nGallery Hours: Open on Tuesdays\, Thursdays\, Fridays\, and Saturdays. DESCRIPTION:Architectural Photography Exhibition\n「構築環境-もうひとつの日本ガイド」建築写真展\nThe exhibition features 80 examples of buildings\, civil engineering works and landscapes\, etc.\, from all of the prefectures in Japan\, which are introduced through photographs\, text and video images. It presents a rarely considered aspect of Japan\, taking the built environment of the various regions of a country that is geographically diverse and often struck by natural disasters\, with the aim of examining how Japanese people have engaged and struggled with the natural environment and how they have carried on and created locality. \n日本の各都道府県に現存する建築、土木、ランドスケープなど80 点を取り上げ、写真とテキストと映像で紹介する。地理的に多様で、多くの自然災害に見舞われてきた日本において、人々が自然環境とどのように対話し格闘してきたか、どのように地域性を継承し創造してきたかという観点から、日本各地の建造物を取り上げる。従来あまり紹介されてこなかった日本の一面を紹介する、「もうひとつの日本ガイド」。 \n\nNotice: Limited Access for This Exhibition \nDue to the installation layout\, hallway space for this exhibition is limited\, which may make access challenging for wheelchair users and those with mobility equipment.
