SUMMARY:Japanese Culture Through the Lens of Traditional Crafts
DESCRIPTION:What is culture? And what does it mean to preserve it? \nWhile we often appreciate and seek to preserve cultures that have been cultivated over long histories\, it is a rare opportunity to reflect on what truly shapes culture—and how culture\, in turn\, shapes us. \nThe speaker\, Mr. Tokunaga\, has spent 2 years on a project visiting 68 traditional artisans across Kyoto\, interviewing each craftsperson and developing the Red List of Kyoto’s Traditional Crafts. Through this journey\, he has continually asked himself these very questions and will now share the insights that have emerged. \nWe invite you to join this talk as a chance for all of us to reflect on and reconnect with culture and perhaps to see Japanese culture from a fresh and different perspective. \nFree admission. Register below. \n\nTOKUNAGA Yuki \nMr. Tokunaga is the founder of the Culpedia\, an organization dedicated to fostering cultural exchange and preserving traditional arts. He is also a collaborative researcher at the Open Lab for Emergent Strategy Research (ROLES) at the Institute of Industrial Science\, the University of Tokyo. \nThrough Culpedia\, he leads cultural initiatives including research into Kyotoʼs Red List of traditional crafts and the creation of paintings by translating Japanese stories for international artists unfamiliar with those tales. He has lectured on Japanese and global culture in over 10 countries worldwide and has visited more than 80 countries in total. \nStriving to act not just as a linguistic interpreter but as an “interpreter of values\,” Mr. Tokunaga continues to champion meaningful cross-cultural dialogue and cultural preservation efforts.

DESCRIPTION:Architectural Photography Exhibition\n「構築環境-もうひとつの日本ガイド」建築写真展\nThe exhibition features 80 examples of buildings\, civil engineering works and landscapes\, etc.\, from all of the prefectures in Japan\, which are introduced through photographs\, text and video images. It presents a rarely considered aspect of Japan\, taking the built environment of the various regions of a country that is geographically diverse and often struck by natural disasters\, with the aim of examining how Japanese people have engaged and struggled with the natural environment and how they have carried on and created locality. \n日本の各都道府県に現存する建築、土木、ランドスケープなど80 点を取り上げ、写真とテキストと映像で紹介する。地理的に多様で、多くの自然災害に見舞われてきた日本において、人々が自然環境とどのように対話し格闘してきたか、どのように地域性を継承し創造してきたかという観点から、日本各地の建造物を取り上げる。従来あまり紹介されてこなかった日本の一面を紹介する、「もうひとつの日本ガイド」。 \n\nNotice: Limited Access for This Exhibition \nDue to the installation layout\, hallway space for this exhibition is limited\, which may make access challenging for wheelchair users and those with mobility equipment. Although Itsuki’s mother says that their old house is gone\, Hiroko finds the address listed under his name and sends him a letter. Surprisingly\, she receives a reply\, and discovers it came from his old classmate\, a girl who also happens to also be called FUJII Itsuki. \nWith impeccable visual direction highlighting a snow-filled Hokkaido and an unforgettable performance from NAKAYAMA Miho playing dual leading roles\, this 1990s spectacle remains a winter classic that has stood the test of time. \nThis screening marks the 30th anniversary of IWAI Shunji’s feature directorial debut\, and but it also serves as a heartfelt tribute to NAKAYAMA Miho\, who tragically passed away late last year. Thank you for your understanding! \n\nDirector Profile: \n \nIWAI Shunji was born on January 24\, 1963\, in Miyagi Prefecture\, Japan. Ever since 1988\, Iwai has been an avid creator in a variety of visual fields including TV dramas and music videos\, and his unique and outstanding visual style has become to be known as “Iwai Aesthetic” – attracting much attention. In 1995\, Iwai made his feature film directorial debut with Love Letter. His representative works include Swallowtail Butterfly (1996)\, April Story (1998)\, All About Lily Chou-Chou (2001)\, Vampire (2011)\, and Last Letter (2018). In 2012\, Iwai wrote the lyrics for “Flowers Will Bloom\,” the theme song to support the recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake. In October 2023\, his latest feature film\, Kyrie\, was released. Iwai continues to work across diverse genres both domestically and internationally\, maintaining a borderless creative presence.  \n\n \n

In addition to his many prize-winning feature films\, his work as a scriptwriter\, director\, producer\, photographer and author also encompasses an abundance of innovative documentary films. \nHis career as a filmmaker began in 1967 when Wenders enrolled at the newly founded University of Television and Film Munich (HFF Munich). Parallel to his studies\, he also worked as a film critic for a number of years. Upon graduating from the academy in 1971\, he founded\, together with fifteen other directors and authors\, the Filmverlag der Autoren\, a film distribution company for German auteur films\, which organized the production\, rights administration and distribution of their own independent films. \n \n\n \n

Created as a tribute to his late mother\, the film depicts one summer day in the life of the Yokoyama family\, gathered together for a commemorative ritual whose nature only gradually becomes clear.  \nRather than focus on big dramatic moments\, Kore-eda relies on simple gestures and domestic routines (especially cooking) to evoke a family’s entire life\, its deep regrets and its daily joys. Into the new millennium\, Director Kore-eda’s films were frequently selected at the Cannes Film Festival\, including Distance (2001)\, Nobody Knows (2004\, Best Actor Award for YUYA Yagira\, Cannes’ youngest recipient)\, Air Doll (2009)\, Like Father\, Like Son (Jury Prize\, 2013)\, Our little Sister (2015) and After the Storm (2016). In 2018\, his film Shoplifters was awarded Cannes’ highest honour\, the Palme d’or\, as well as being nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Award. In recent years\, he reached a turning point in international co-productions with The Truth (2019) in France\, and Broker (2022\, Cannes Festival Best Actor Award for Song Kang-ho) in South Korea. Now “Two”\, a persistent co-worker\, asks her out. As no one has ever done this before\, she is pleased\, but their relationship does not seem to catch fire. This cannot be said for the futon in her apartment\, which bursts into flame from contact with an electric heater. The fire is extinguished\, but her brush with death makes her determined to see Ichi again\, and she sets to work organizing a reunion of classmates who\, by and large\, don’t remember her at all. Tremble All You Want is her third collaboration with MATSUOKA Mayu (Shoplifters\, A Silent Voice).\n \n\nWhat is White Day? \nIn Japan\, White Day is celebrated on March 14\, one month after Valentine’s Day. It was popularized in the 1980s as a “reply day\,” when men would reciprocate the presents they had received from women a month earlier\, usually chocolates and other confectionary. In recent years\, there are those who continue to practice Valentine’s and White Day traditions\, while there have also been cultural shifts around gender norms\, societal expectations\, and even financial viability surrounding these practices. White Day is also observed in China\, South Korea\, Taiwan\, and Vietnam. \n \n

SUMMARY:Isolated in the City:  How architecture mitigates urban loneliness
DESCRIPTION:“Isolated in the City: How architecture mitigates urban loneliness” talk event on February 20 is now fully booked and registration is closed. Thank you for your interest. We will have an in-person waiting line before the event to release available seats on a first-come\, first-served basis. Admission is not guaranteed in the waiting line. \n \nIn big cities like Tokyo or Toronto\, social isolation and loneliness are common occurrences among residents. Social isolation can be caused by architectural factors such as detached living spaces and lack of communal spaces such as parks or green areas in big cities. The increasing number of single-person households and the growth of urban societies further exacerbate urban loneliness.  \nWhile exploring Tokyo’s megalopolis\, this lecture will examine how societal atomization impacts Japanese architecture and the urban landscape. On one hand\, the speaker will guide us through her investigation of new commercial solutions for individuals; on the other\, we will explore living arrangements designed for single people that encourage daily interactions. At a time when the risks of social isolation and exclusion are growing in global cities\, we will seek to understand how architecture can help mitigate these issues. \nThe speaker\, who is a former recipient of the Japan Foundation postdoctoral fellowship\, will also share her experiences in Japan alongside the primary lecture topic.  \n  \n\n  \nThe Speaker \nDr. Alice Covatta works across architecture and anthropology. She is a professor of architecture at the Faculty of Environmental Design at the University of Montreal. In 2016\, she obtained the Japan Foundation postdoctoral fellowship and worked as a researcher at Keio University in Tokyo until 2019. Her practice follows the spatial implications of society’s atomization in contemporary architecture\, public space\, and the city\, as well as in practiced and lived space.
