Although star Toshiro Mifune is best known for his roles in Kurosawa’s historical dramas\, such as The Seven Samurai and Rashomon\, he equally powerful playing a businessman bent on avenging the death of the father he never knew by marrying daughter of the man responsible and infiltrating his company.

Ōishi Kuranosuke\, Chief retainer of the Enya clan\, spends night after night at parties\, hiding his secret mission of vendetta. Conspiracy and suspicion intersect in the radiant red light district. We thank you for your interest. \n\nFilm Introduction:\nGreat cook Haru has married into the legendary “Kitchen Samurai” family. But her husband who is the successor of the family can’t cook at all. Haru makes a vow to make him a superb samurai chef\, and starts teaching her new husband how to cook. Directed by Yuzo Asahara\, known for “Free and Easy” series\, the film stars Aya Ueto “Oshin” (2013) as Haru\, along with Kengo Kora “A Story of Yonosuke” (2012) as her husband Yasunobu\, supported by the veteran actors Kimiko Yo “Departures” (2008)\, Toshiyuki Nishida “Outrage Beyond” (2012)\, and aromas and flavors of Kaga cuisine. \nAlso feel free to check out the other films in our series happening the week before the class\, on January 8th: “Neko Samurai” and “Sue\, Mai and Sawa“!

DESCRIPTION:Legendary Loyalty\nThe 47 Ronin in Japanese Prints \nco-presented by Stuart Jackson Gallery and The Japan Foundation\nNovember 15\, 2016 – March 4\, 2017 \nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto\, with the Stuart Jackson Gallery\, Toronto\, is proud to co-present original 18th – 19th century woodblock print illustrations of theatrical performances of the story of Chushingura\, and artistic depictions of the actual ronin (masterless samurai). \nThree centuries ago\, a series of events culminating on the snowy night of the 14th day of the 12th month\, 1702 (January 30\, 1703\, in today’s calendar) would shake and alter Japan and the world’s perception of that country. \nThe story of the 47 ronin and their vendetta is one of the most popular Japanese stories of “legendary loyalty” and revenge. It all began in 1701 when Lord Asano of Ako attempted to kill Lord Kira\, a senior official at the Shogun’s palace. His motive is unknown – in theatrical versions it is because Kira has insulted Asano.  Kira was only wounded\, but as it was such a serious offence\, Asano’s execution was ordered and he committed seppuku (ritual suicide).  Asano’s properties were confiscated and his retainers became ronin. \nThese 47 ronin\, under the leadership of Oishi Kuranosuke\, planned revenge against Lord Kira.  A year later\, they attacked his mansion and engaged in a fierce battle against his retainers. The ronin captured and killed Kira\, laying his severed head in front of Lord Asano’s grave at Sengakuji Temple.  They surrendered to the authorities\, were condemned to death\, and were allowed to perform seppuku. Their graves are by their master’s. \nThe story immediately captivated the Japanese public at the time. Within days of the deaths of the ronin\, a kabuki play based on the story was performed. The play was closed down after three days because stories about current events were prohibited. Other plays based on the ronin’s story kept reappearing until 1748 when a fictionalized drama\, Kanadehon Chushingura\, was successfully performed at the puppet theatre and later at the kabuki. DESCRIPTION:Talk and slide presentation\nby Carol Dorman\nAssociate\, Stuart Jackson Gallery\, Toronto \nin conjunction with “Legendary Loyalty: The 47 Ronin in Japanese Prints” exhibition \nThe 47 Ronin in Ukiyo-e Prints \nCarol Dorman became interested in Japanese art while pursuing graduate studies at the University of Toronto.  She has been a collector of Japanese Ukiyo-e prints for over 30 years and for the past 20 years has been associated with the Stuart Jackson Gallery\, Toronto\, specializing in antique Japanese prints.  Ms. Dorman has spoken about ukiyo-e on television and given lectures to various groups in Ontario and Quebec and most recently at Gargi College\, University of Delhi\, in India.  She has curated and been involved in print exhibitions at the Japan Foundation\, the Gardiner Museum\, and the Stuart Jackson Gallery\, and co-authored a publication on prints of the Tokaido Road. \nRSVP: online or 416-966-1600 x229 \n

DESCRIPTION:Legendary Loyalty\nThe 47 Ronin in Japanese Prints \nco-presented by Stuart Jackson Gallery and The Japan Foundation\nNovember 15\, 2016 – March 4\, 2017 \n  \nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto\, with the Stuart Jackson Gallery\, Toronto\, is proud to co-present original 18th – 19th century woodblock print illustrations of theatrical performances of the story of Chushingura\, and artistic depictions of the actual ronin (masterless samurai). \nThree centuries ago\, a series of events culminating on the snowy night of the 14th day of the 12th month\, 1702 (January 30\, 1703\, in today’s calendar) would shake and alter Japan and the world’s perception of that country. \nThe story of the 47 ronin and their vendetta is one of the most popular Japanese stories of “legendary loyalty” and revenge. It all began in 1701 when Lord Asano of Ako attempted to kill Lord Kira\, a senior official at the Shogun’s palace. His motive is unknown – in theatrical versions it is because Kira has insulted Asano.  Kira was only wounded\, but as it was such a serious offence\, Asano’s execution was ordered and he committed seppuku (ritual suicide).  Asano’s properties were confiscated and his retainers became ronin. \nThese 47 ronin\, under the leadership of Oishi Kuranosuke\, planned revenge against Lord Kira.  A year later\, they attacked his mansion and engaged in a fierce battle against his retainers. The ronin captured and killed Kira\, laying his severed head in front of Lord Asano’s grave at Sengakuji Temple.  They surrendered to the authorities\, were condemned to death\, and were allowed to perform seppuku. Their graves are by their master’s. \nThe story immediately captivated the Japanese public at the time. Within days of the deaths of the ronin\, a kabuki play based on the story was performed. The play was closed down after three days because stories about current events were prohibited. Other plays based on the ronin’s story kept reappearing until 1748 when a fictionalized drama\, Kanadehon Chushingura\, was successfully performed at the puppet theatre and later at the kabuki. DESCRIPTION:Talk and slide presentation in conjunction with Designthinkers 2016 \nDesigner\, Kenya Hara (b.1958) emphasizes the design of both objects and experiences. \nIn 2000\, he produced the exhibition RE-DESIGN–Daily Products of the 21st Century\, which successfully presented the fact that the resources of astonishing design are found in the context of the very ordinary and casual. In 2002\, Hara became a member of MUJI’s advisory board and began acting as its art director. In 2004\, he planned and directed the exhibition HAPTIC – Awakening the Senses revealing to the audience that great resources of design are dormant in the human senses. Much of his work\, including the programs for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Nagano Winter Olympic Games and Expo 2005 is deeply rooted in Japanese culture. In 2007 and 2009\, he produced two exhibitions titled TOKYO FIBER — SENSEWARE in Paris\, Milan and Tokyo\, and from 2008 through 2009\, the exhibition JAPAN CAR in Paris and at the Science Museum in London. Hara’s focus in these kinds of exhibitions is on visualizing and widely disseminating the potentiality of industry. The radius of his activity has been expanding to the rest of Asia as well\, including the traveling exhibition DESIGNING DESIGN Kenya Hara 2011 China Exhibition that starts in Beijing in 2011. SUMMARY:Takashi Hiraide Author's Talk: The life of a book....somewhere between the Cat and the Walnut.
DESCRIPTION:Takashi Hiraide\, celebrated author and book designer\, will discuss his literary and artistic practice in relation to his published works and ongoing mail art experiment.  Hiraide contemplates the life of what we consider to be a “book” and its origins in the form of diaries and letters. Hiraide is involved in the complete process of bringing a book to life\, including the book-binding\, design and in some cases\, even the shipping to an individual reader\, as exhibited within “Takashi Hiraide —- Airpost Poetry Book Design for One from One.” His modern art influences and book design will be explored in relation to the current exhibition. The interplay of different literary forms and genres is a constant throughout Hiraide’s body of work. DESCRIPTION:TAKASHI HIRAIDE—-AIRPOST POETRY\nBOOK DESIGN FOR ONE FROM ONE \nOctober 4 – November 5\, 2016\nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto \n《TH_AIRPOST》is  an “Aerial Post Office” utilized by the Minimum Press which was created by Hiraide in relationship with the postal system. The author writes\, creates the layout\, prints\, formats and does the bookbinding by himself. The literary work that is created in this way is accessed through an intermediary post office located on the web and ultimately delivered to the individual mailboxes of readers worldwide. \nThere is a “Book” that is both a letter and an objet d’art or a “Poem” that is both a postcard and a greeting\, and these create a unique one-to-one relationship\, a bridge between the reader and the author. In the same way that various life forms exist in relationship with the environment while adapting their forms to others\, the creation of the singular experience of the book unfolds. \nThe《AIRPOST POETRY》exhibit is the first time that an overview of this experiment 《FOR ONE FROM ONE》has been presented. \n\nTakashi Hiraide is a poet\, critic and book designer. He has published books of various genres and forms from poetry to prose and from poetics of sports to criticism on arts\, receiving numerous prizes. Kenzaburo Oe\, Nobel Prize-winning novelist\, highly praised Hiraide’s writings for providing a new direction for prose within the field of poetry. His first novel\, The Guest Cat\, became a New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller in 2014. \n

Dashi is the bedrock of Japanese cuisine. Deceptively simple\, master chefs have jealously guarded its secrets for centuries. Its development came about as a result of a historical event that triggered a “food revolution”: Buddhism arrived in Japan 1500 years ago\, prohibiting the consumption of meat. The Japanese quickly sought other sources of umami taste and found it in dashi. \nSaturday\, July 23 and Saturday\, August 6: 1:00 pm SEMINAR ROOM \n\nJapan\, Man and Nature in Harmony: Shoyu and the Secrets of Japanese Cuisine\n2014\, 49 minutes\, English and Japanese with English subtitles \nThe Japanese discovered that a humble mould spore could transform soya beans into shoyu\, the soy sauce that is a pillar of Japanese cuisine. Sprinkle it on rice and the rice changes into sake… This mould is a tiny organism called Aspergillus oryzae and mysteriously\, it exists only in Japan! We travel to the imperial city of Kyoto\, where the ancient craft of brewing shoyu is preserved. This delicate process begins in spring and requires a whole year to mature the soy sauce. The shoyu brewer knows it is all a question of balance and harmony…\n\nSaturday\, July 23 and Saturday\, August 6: 2:00 pm SEMINAR ROOM \n\nGrandma’s Eternal Forest\n2012\, 49 minutes\, English and Japanese with English subtitles \nGrandma Kuniko Shiiba\, aged 87\, is an amazing lady: she is the last person in Japan who continues to practice a traditional and sustainable form of slash-and-burn agriculture that dates back more than 4000 years. After clearing a section of her forest\, she grows four successive yearly crops of buckwheat\, Japanese millet\, adzuki beans and soybeans\, then lets forest grow wild again for 26 years before starting a new crop cycle.
