DESCRIPTION:This summer\, the Japan Foundation\, Toronto (JFT) has a new mini-course for anyone who wants to take Japanese for a test-run: Marugoto Summer Sampler! This course places its focus on speaking\, and over three weeks in July/August students will gain the knowledge and skills to start talking about themselves and their world in Japanese. \nAnd not only will students learn to speak in Japanese\, they will also put it to use outside of the classroom with a trip to a local Japanese restaurant! \nRegistration for this class is now full. We thank everyone for their interest.\nCourse Content & Schedule:\nThis course runs Tuesday and Thursday nights for three weeks in July/August\, and includes 5 classes and 1 night out! In each class\, not only will we look at the Japanese language\, but also showcase Japanese culture and various Japanese resources available at the JFT and in the city at large! \n・　July 26: Orientation / Greetings in Japanese / Toronto’s Japanese Community\n・　July 28: Talking about yourself / JFT Gallery Tour\n・　August 2: Talking about your hobbies & interests / Japanese Business Culture\n・　August 4: Talking about food / JFT Library Tour\n・　August 9: Ordering at a restaurant / Japanese Food Culture\n・　August 11: Dinner at a local Japanese restaurant* \n* The cost of dinner is not included in the course fees. Dashi is the bedrock of Japanese cuisine. Deceptively simple\, master chefs have jealously guarded its secrets for centuries. Its development came about as a result of a historical event that triggered a “food revolution”: Buddhism arrived in Japan 1500 years ago\, prohibiting the consumption of meat. The Japanese quickly sought other sources of umami taste and found it in dashi. \nSaturday\, July 23 and Saturday\, August 6: 1:00 pm SEMINAR ROOM \n\nJapan\, Man and Nature in Harmony: Shoyu and the Secrets of Japanese Cuisine\n2014\, 49 minutes\, English and Japanese with English subtitles \nThe Japanese discovered that a humble mould spore could transform soya beans into shoyu\, the soy sauce that is a pillar of Japanese cuisine. Sprinkle it on rice and the rice changes into sake… This mould is a tiny organism called Aspergillus oryzae and mysteriously\, it exists only in Japan! We travel to the imperial city of Kyoto\, where the ancient craft of brewing shoyu is preserved. This delicate process begins in spring and requires a whole year to mature the soy sauce. The shoyu brewer knows it is all a question of balance and harmony…\n\nSaturday\, July 23 and Saturday\, August 6: 2:00 pm SEMINAR ROOM \n\nGrandma’s Eternal Forest\n2012\, 49 minutes\, English and Japanese with English subtitles \nGrandma Kuniko Shiiba\, aged 87\, is an amazing lady: she is the last person in Japan who continues to practice a traditional and sustainable form of slash-and-burn agriculture that dates back more than 4000 years. After clearing a section of her forest\, she grows four successive yearly crops of buckwheat\, Japanese millet\, adzuki beans and soybeans\, then lets forest grow wild again for 26 years before starting a new crop cycle. DESCRIPTION:May 24 – August 18\, 2016\nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto \nYAKISHIME—Earth Metamorphosis focuses on the yakishime ceramic technique in which unglazed wares are fired at extremely high temperatures of 1\,200-1\,300˚C. While one of the most basic or primitive means of producing ceramics\, yakishime has developed in distinctive directions in Japan\, and production has continued unbroken from Japan’s middle ages through the present. \nThe process\, which dates back as far as the 4th or 5th century\, became a mainstay of the Japanese ceramic repertoire in the 17th century\, and remains a substantial component of the output for major ceramic centres such as Bizen and Shigaraki. The high-firing produces vitrification\, or glassiness\, and a rough\, earthy surface punctuated with patches of brilliant sheen and colour. In addition\, it makes the results unpredictable\, and the challenge facing the ceramist is to retain control over the delicate transformations in the clay. \nThis exhibition examines yakishime as an element of traditional Japanese culture from its earliest origins to contemporary works. It includes pieces made for the tea ceremony\, demonstrating how yakishime gained new status in the Muromachi period (1338–1573)\, as practitioners searched for a distinctively Japanese sense of wabi and sabi\, the art of finding beauty in imperfection and profundity in the natural and authentic. Also presented are examples of yakishime tableware\, essential items for serving Japanese food through which we can glimpse a uniquely Japanese sensibility. SUMMARY:Reflecting on the Past/ Reflecting on the Future: Hyogo Aid ’95 Revisited
DESCRIPTION:April 13 – May 13\, 2016\nThe Japan Foundation\, Toronto\nThe works exhibited here form a set of posters\, compiled as an initiative of the Hyogo Aid ’95 Committee in 1996. In order to support the victims of the Great Hanshin Awaji Earthquake\, twenty-three artists\, designers\, and photographers contributed images of their original works. In A1 size\, a common poster format in Japan\, these artworks were reproduced using state-of-the-art printing technology. Tadanori Yokoo\, one of the star participating artists of this series\, designed the exhibition poster and visited The Japan Foundation\, Toronto for the opening. \n\nDirector’s Message:\nThe journey is the reward. \nIn 1995\, the Japan Foundation\, Toronto was reborn. What began as an office became a fully-fledged cultural centre\, complete with a gallery for the exhibition of Japanese and Japan-related artworks. \nAnd the exhibition that first graced our gallery walls at our original location in the Colonnade was Hyogo Aid ’95. \n1995 was the year of the devastating Great Hanshin Earthquake in Kobe in which over six thousand lives were lost. The international community embraced the people of Japan\, and we were overwhelmed by the kind thoughts of those in Canada and all over the world. \nMany Japanese artists also showed their solidarity by contributing works of art in support of recovery efforts. Thus the Hyogo Aid ’95 project was born. \nNow we find ourselves twenty years on in a new location\, looking back on the many exhibitions and programs we have been able to present. Seeing the artwork in this collection on the gallery walls at the Japan Foundation\, Toronto once again\, I am reminded of the journey we have taken. The whole of Marugoto: Japanese Language and Culture!\nMarugoto: Japanese Language and Culture\, a textbook based on the JF Standard for Japanese Language Education\, is a fun resource for anyone wanting to learn about the Japanese language and culture and striving to become able to communicate in Japanese. Marugoto places importance on students accomplishing tasks given with “Can-do” statements\, contextualized learning through topics and situations\, intercultural understanding\, collaborative learning\, learner autonomy\, and the language acquisition process\, among others. These are all connected to the concept of “Japanese for mutual understanding” which was key to the development of the book. \nWeaving in the above concepts\, in this workshop\, the foundations\, characteristics\, and use of Marugoto will be explained. We believe that you will discover a different world of Japanese language education from that of textbooks that centre on sentence patterns. SUMMARY:Handcrafted Form: Tradition and Techniques
DESCRIPTION:People in Japan are surrounded by utilitarian craft objects that have been brought into being and nurtured within their daily lives. By making the most of the raw materials of each craft—ceramics\, textiles\, metal work\, lacquerware\, wood and bamboo work\, paper\, etc.—and contriving to use the techniques appropriate to each\, goods have been created that combine ease of use with beauty. \nFollowing the industrial revolution in the West\, Japan also saw the modernization of production during the Meiji era (1868-1912). Through the introduction of machines\, most of the craft objects that until then had been made by hand were replaced by mass-produced\, industrially manufactured goods. Alongside the mechanized production that occurred from the beginning of the Meiji era\, however\, production of hand-made craft objects continued on a smaller scale in independent\, regional workshops throughout Japan. While this workshop system fostered superior artisans\, among those workshop artisans it also gave rise to individualistic\, idiosyncratic craft artists. \nTraditional material and techniques\, rooted in the climate and landscape of every region of Japan\, produced both utilitarian craft objects made by the seasoned skills of artists and art works richly imbued with the creativity of craft artists. Artisans and artists have influenced each other. This mutual influence has contributed to the depth and high quality of Japanese craft as a whole. \nThis exhibition introduces hand crafted objects made from traditional materials with traditional techniques from all over Japan. SUMMARY:Poster Exhibition: Getting the Big Picture in B-Zero
DESCRIPTION:May 6 – June 30\, 2015\n The Japan Foundation\, Toronto \nIn 1953\, the Nissenbi (Japan Advertising Artists Club) Poster Competition set the entry format size as B1 (103 cm × 72.8 cm). This format quickly became the standard for posters in Japan. However\, for special occasions\, Japanese graphic designers took advantage of the larger horizon of the B-Zero size (103 cm × 145.6 cm). Designing in the B-Zero format is the most challenging and rewarding task for graphic designers. Exactly double the size of B1\, these expanded posters are designed to dazzle commuters at train and subway stations. \nIn addition to its function in advertising\, B-Zero is also used for artistic purposes\, with original posters created for display in exhibitions. Thank you for your interest.\n\nFrom “Wabi-Sabi” to “kawaii”\, the very Japanese aesthetic concepts are merging modernity with enduring traditions\, and as a result\, are gaining widespread recognition all over the world. Focusing on and introducing two terms : Wabi-Sabi and Kawaii \, Ms. Fukai will try to make clear the properties in Japanese Culture and Art\, both of which appear in contemporary Japanese fashion\, one of the element of Cool Japan\, in the context of their profound relation to traditional aesthetic values. \nAbout the speaker: Akiko Fukai is a leading fashion historian of Japan and has been Associate Professor of the International Research Center for Japanese Studies (Kyoto)\, Professor of Shizuoka University of Art and Culture\, and a lecturer at the University of Tokyo and Rikkyo University. Her curatorial achievements include several major international exhibitions such as Revolution in Fashion\, Fashion in Colors\, Luxury in Fashion Reconsidered\, and Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion. \nShe is the author and editor of many books including Japonism in Fashion (Heibonsha\, 1994)\, Fashion (Taschen\, 2002)\, The Century of Fashion (Heibonsha\, 2005)\, and Reading Fashion from Pictures (PHP Institute\, 2009).
