As detailed below\, the second workshop in this series will be a session hosted by Hiromi Kijima\, the chief developer of the textbook Marugoto: Japanese Language and Culture. \nAfter the workshop\, there will be a mixer that we hope many people will be able to attend. \nRegistration Deadline: Sunday November 22\, 2015. (Please understand catering cannot be guaranteed for applications received after this deadline) \nTheme: By the author! The whole of Marugoto: Japanese Language and Culture!\nMarugoto: Japanese Language and Culture\, a textbook based on the JF Standard for Japanese Language Education\, is a fun resource for anyone wanting to learn about the Japanese language and culture and striving to become able to communicate in Japanese. Marugoto places importance on students accomplishing tasks given with “Can-do” statements\, contextualized learning through topics and situations\, intercultural understanding\, collaborative learning\, learner autonomy\, and the language acquisition process\, among others. These are all connected to the concept of “Japanese for mutual understanding” which was key to the development of the book. \nWeaving in the above concepts\, in this workshop\, the foundations\, characteristics\, and use of Marugoto will be explained. We believe that you will discover a different world of Japanese language education from that of textbooks that centre on sentence patterns. DESCRIPTION:Whether you’re a life-long fan of Japanese food or interested in trying it for the first time\, join us at the Japan Foundation for a class looking into the language and culture behind washoku (Japanese food). In this class we will cover both Japanese words and expressions as well as the Japanese way of thinking about food and eating. SUMMARY:Handcrafted Form: Tradition and Techniques
DESCRIPTION:People in Japan are surrounded by utilitarian craft objects that have been brought into being and nurtured within their daily lives. By making the most of the raw materials of each craft—ceramics\, textiles\, metal work\, lacquerware\, wood and bamboo work\, paper\, etc.—and contriving to use the techniques appropriate to each\, goods have been created that combine ease of use with beauty. \nFollowing the industrial revolution in the West\, Japan also saw the modernization of production during the Meiji era (1868-1912). Through the introduction of machines\, most of the craft objects that until then had been made by hand were replaced by mass-produced\, industrially manufactured goods. Alongside the mechanized production that occurred from the beginning of the Meiji era\, however\, production of hand-made craft objects continued on a smaller scale in independent\, regional workshops throughout Japan. While this workshop system fostered superior artisans\, among those workshop artisans it also gave rise to individualistic\, idiosyncratic craft artists. \nTraditional material and techniques\, rooted in the climate and landscape of every region of Japan\, produced both utilitarian craft objects made by the seasoned skills of artists and art works richly imbued with the creativity of craft artists. Artisans and artists have influenced each other. This mutual influence has contributed to the depth and high quality of Japanese craft as a whole. \nThis exhibition introduces hand crafted objects made from traditional materials with traditional techniques from all over Japan. SUMMARY:Poster Exhibition: Getting the Big Picture in B-Zero
DESCRIPTION:May 6 – June 30\, 2015\n The Japan Foundation\, Toronto \nIn 1953\, the Nissenbi (Japan Advertising Artists Club) Poster Competition set the entry format size as B1 (103 cm × 72.8 cm). This format quickly became the standard for posters in Japan. However\, for special occasions\, Japanese graphic designers took advantage of the larger horizon of the B-Zero size (103 cm × 145.6 cm). Designing in the B-Zero format is the most challenging and rewarding task for graphic designers. Exactly double the size of B1\, these expanded posters are designed to dazzle commuters at train and subway stations. \nIn addition to its function in advertising\, B-Zero is also used for artistic purposes\, with original posters created for display in exhibitions. Thank you for your interest.\n\nFrom “Wabi-Sabi” to “kawaii”\, the very Japanese aesthetic concepts are merging modernity with enduring traditions\, and as a result\, are gaining widespread recognition all over the world. Focusing on and introducing two terms : Wabi-Sabi and Kawaii \, Ms. Fukai will try to make clear the properties in Japanese Culture and Art\, both of which appear in contemporary Japanese fashion\, one of the element of Cool Japan\, in the context of their profound relation to traditional aesthetic values. \nAbout the speaker: Akiko Fukai is a leading fashion historian of Japan and has been Associate Professor of the International Research Center for Japanese Studies (Kyoto)\, Professor of Shizuoka University of Art and Culture\, and a lecturer at the University of Tokyo and Rikkyo University. Her curatorial achievements include several major international exhibitions such as Revolution in Fashion\, Fashion in Colors\, Luxury in Fashion Reconsidered\, and Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion. \nShe is the author and editor of many books including Japonism in Fashion (Heibonsha\, 1994)\, Fashion (Taschen\, 2002)\, The Century of Fashion (Heibonsha\, 2005)\, and Reading Fashion from Pictures (PHP Institute\, 2009). Fukai has also been the recipient of a special prize awarded by the Academy of Japonism in Japan (2000)\, an honorable doctorate degree of the National University of Ochanomizu (2004)\, and a Commissioner for Cultural Affairs Award\, Japan (2008). \npresented in conjunction with the exhibition From Geisha to Diva: The Kimonos of Ichimaru at the Textile Museum of Canada
