The films are in conjunction with a special lecture by Japanese film scholar Professor Alex Zahlten in November. Prof. Zahlten will discuss some basic shifts in the relationship to media / the media environment that transpired in Japan during this shifting bubble era. Some viewers may find the films disturbing. DESCRIPTION: \nThe Toronto Silent Film Festival \nA Page of Madness 狂った一頁\n1926 Japan\nDirector: Teinosuke Kinugasa\nYoshi Nakagawa\, Ayako Iijima\n \n\nTICKETS HERE > \n\nA Page of Madness is a visually stunning masterpiece.  It peels back its inner mysteries in both beautiful and disturbing ways.  Made without intertitles\, it is from the opening moment’s enigmatic impressions and scenes\, a moving cacophony of which we’re not quite sure how it all fits together. We see a beautiful dancer in an elaborate headpiece dancing on a stylized stage. As the camera backs away\, suddenly we are seeing her through bars\, like those of a prison. When the scene cuts to a girl in a ragged dress\, dancing feverishly in her cell as if compelled by an unseen force\, it becomes clear that she is an asylum inmate\, and the beautiful woman we first saw is her delusion.\n\nJust like in Cabinet of Dr. Caligari\, a film this is most often compared to\, a plot eventually emerges. The old janitor works at the asylum to be near his wife\, who is a patient there. When their daughter arrives with the news of her engagement\, the family’s story\, in the form of flashbacks\, begins to piece together. The janitor attempts to free his wife from the asylum\, but she seems unwilling to go—perhaps she knows it’s where she belongs\, although there are signs that she may be afraid of her husband\, who may be going mad himself.\nOften called an “experimental” film\, it can be interpreted in many different ways. The director himself\, in his autobiography\, said he decided to make it after seeing “the entourage of a certain noble gentleman\, “one whom “secret whisperings” identified as Yoshihito (later Emperor Taisho). This film could therefore be also construed as a political allegory. The best films are always open for debate and however you may wish to interpret this film\, it’s up to you.\n\nDirector Kinugasa went on to become a pillar of mainstream Japanese cinema (even bringing home the Palme d’Or from Cannes in 1954. DeMille’s name as Hollywood legend—THE CHEAT is scathing in its portrayal of greed\, sexual desire\, and deceit. Starring Fannie Ward and Japanese screen idol Sessue Hayakawa\, DeMille’s scandalous feature was the sensation of 1915\, leading to several riots upon its release. A box office sensation\, it’s “pre” Pre-Code and one of the silent era’s most notorious and transgressive depictions of sexuality and race. \nSessue Hayakawa in his most famous/infamous roles plays Japanese business man Hishituru Tori\, whose sexual obsession with flighty socialite Edith Hardy (Fannie Ward) sparks an illicit business deal. After defrauding the Red Cross to pay off her dressmaker’s tab\, Tori offers to loan Edith the money to cover her crime and keep her powerful husband (Jack Dean) unaware of her shameful deeds. However\, Tori refuses to let Edith pay back her loan\, and instead prefers to take his fee by defiling any pretence of her virtue. THE CHEAT’s “branding sequence” is one of the silent era’s most graphic scenes of violence\, one that leads to the film’s murderous conclusion. \nWhile it is undeniable that THE CHEAT depicts Hayakawa’s character in a racist light\, the actor’s performance\, regardless\, is a triumph. Mikiko Sasaki’s documentary finds Sasuke at a turning point in his career\, considering a return to politics (he once served as the first masked member of the Iwate Prefectural Diet) and dealing with the effects on his body of 20 years in the ring. A warm portrait of a true individualist\, The Great Sasuke also manages to touch on the challenges being married to a risk-taking athlete\, the aftermath of the 2011 tsunami in Tohoku\, and the travails of a local politician on the campaign trail\, offering an unconventional slice of life in Northern Japan. \nimage © Jonathan Schwarz\n\nMikiko Sasaki is a documentary filmmaker based in Oakland\, CA. Why is Taishoken beloved by so many? The story is not only about his pursuit of the perfect blend of flavors. It’s about his life\, love and the strong bond he shares with the people he believes in. \nCompiled from over ten years of documentary footage\, the film incorporates beautiful scenery from Yamagishi’s hometown in Nagano and is enhanced by the “savory” narration of noted ramen lover Shosuke Tanihara\, and the beautiful ending theme song written by Joe Hisaishi.
