Directory for Japanese Studies Institutions in Canada – March 2026

Japanese studies in Canada were previously surveyed and compiled in the 2013 Directory of Japan Specialists and Japanese Studies Institutions in Canada, a project completed by the University of Hawaii with support from The Japan Foundation. This project was carried out by the Japan Foundation, Toronto with support from Japan Studies Association of Canada starting late 2024 to update the previous directory’s content, thereby developing and providing an overview of the current state and future of Japanese studies in Canada.

The following document contains details of faculty and staff, courses and programs, library collections, and other Japan-related outreach and activities at 39 educational institutes offering Japanese studies across the country. This information is preceeded by analysis from qualitative surveys and quantitative data gathered. The project’s main objective is to be a useful resource for all stakeholders, including scholars, researchers, teachers, and institutions in the field of Japanese Studies.

All information in the directory is reflected as of February 2025.

*Please note that we may be updating the directory as necessary until April 2026. Any changes will be updated here.
