1. Levels
This level checker is based on the contents of the series of course books called “Marugoto”, which have been developed by the Japan Foundation.
The 6 levels covered in this level checker are: Starter (A1), Elementary 1 (A2-1), Elementary 2 (A2-2), Pre-Intermediate (A2/B1), Intermediate (B1-1), and Intermediate (B1-2), which correspond to our Marugoto Japanese course levels.
The levels are based on the
JF Standard. Here is a brief outline of the levels, from A1 to B2 communicative skills:
- A1: Can interact using simple terms and phrases
- A2: Can communicate in simple and routine situations
- B1: Can give brief explanations on familiar topics
- B2: Can express one’s opinion, giving reasons
2. How to complete the self-checker
- You will check your “Can-do” level by listening to dialogues on 3 topics: “Family and Myself”, “Food”, and “Hobbies”.
- For each topic, you will listen to 5-6 short conversations from the A1 to B1 level, and then be asked to choose the highest level you understood.
- For the last topic, there is also an option to read 6 dialogues to check your reading level.
- If you can understand all or most of what is being said in a conversation, that means you “understand” that conversation and can choose that level in your answer.
