Director Profile:

FUKADA Koji (深田 晃司) is a Japanese film director and screenwriter. Born in Tokyo, Fukada had a father who was a film aficionado and he watched many films on VHS when he was young. Fukada enrolled in a film school while attending university. In 2005, he joined the production unit of the theater company, “Seinen-dan,” led by renowned playwright HIRATA Oriza. This connection has remained central to his early work, with Fukada adapting Hirata’s play and casting the company’s actors in his films.

Fukada began gaining recognition with early works such as Human Comedy in Tokyo (2008) and Hospitalité (2010), which were screened at the Osaka Asian Film Festival as part of a special program highlighting his emerging talent. His subsequent films, Au revoir l’été (2013) and Sayonara (2015), were both selected for the main competition at the Tokyo International Film Festival, further establishing his international presence.

In 2016, Fukada’s film Harmonium was selected for the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival. It received critical acclaim and won the Jury Prize, establishing him as one of Japan’s most distinctive contemporary auteurs. More recently, his film LOVE LIFE was selected for the main competition at the Venice International Film Festival in 2022, and Love On Trial premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2025. His latest film, Nagi Notes, had its world premiere at the main competition of the 2026 Cannes Film Festival.
