Akira Kurosawa’s KANJINCHŌ
“The Men Who Tread on the Tiger’s Tail” (1945) 59 min.
Based on “Kanjinchō” Kabuki play -Tora no O wo fumu Otokotachi-『虎の尾を踏む男達』 黒沢明監督、大河内伝次郎、榎本健一
Talk and DVD presentation by Toshi Aoyagi
When the end of World War II was approaching and Tokyo burnt-out by air-raids, Akira Kurosawa shot his version of KANJINCHŌ. Ōkōchi Denjirō, a samurai film star portrayed Benkei, and vaudeville superstar Ken’ichi Enomoto appeared as a comical porter. By adding extra characters in the film, Kurosawa made a clearer separation between the bureaucracy and the momentary miracle of friendship between Togashi and Benkei, representing the only hope in a failed, dysfunctional social system.
