IBBY Collection on Display at the Japan Foundation Toronto Library
The Japan Foundation Toronto Library is proud to share a new exhibit in conjunction with the North York Central Branch of the Toronto Public Library. A selection of items in Japanese from the IBBY Collection for Young People with Disabilities comes to us on loan from January 19 through February 27 from the TPL’s North York Central Library.
The mission of IBBY (International Board on Books for Young People) is to promote international understanding through children’s books, and to give children everywhere the opportunity to have access to books with high literary and artistic standards. The collection housed by the TPL includes colourful cloth books, braille items, and interactive materials – some of which match titles currently offered at the Japan Foundation Toronto Library. It also includes quality books written for, by, and about children and teens with physical, developmental, intellectual and language disabilities.
Every two years the IBBY Documentation Centre selects approximately 50 titles from around the world as part of the “Outstanding Books for Young People with Disabilities” showcase. All of the Japanese-language items from North York Central Library’s collection that have Outstanding status are part of the temporary exhibition at JFT. In total, we will be showcasing 40 Japanese-language IBBY items in the library for a period of six weeks.
