The Japan Foundation, Toronto is pleased to invite you to join us as local writer Lynne Kutsukake interviews one of Japan’s most celebrated authors. Known in particular for her subtle narrative style, Kyoko Nakajima will discuss her use of place and time in the narrative of her 2010 Naoki award winning novel The Little House (小さいおうち), to be released in English in Canada on November 29, 2019. The writers will also discuss current trends in both Japanese and Canadian literature as they discuss their experiences. Nakajima will also read from her award winning novel and there will be the opportunity for audience Q and A.

The Japan Foundation, Toronto and TIFA (Toronto International Festival of Authors) look forward to hosting award-winning author Kyoko Nakajima.

KYOKO NAKAJIMA was born in Tokyo in 1964. After working at a publishing firm and as a freelance writer, she made her debut as a novelist in 2003 with Futon. In 2010 her novel Chiisai Ouchi (The Little House) won the Naoki Prize. This was followed by the Izumi Kyoka Prize for Literature for Tsuma ga shiitake datta koro (When My Wife Was a Shiitake) in 2014 and the Kawai Hayao Story Prize and Historical Fiction Writers Club Award for Katazuno! (One-Horn!) in 2015. Her other works include Ito no koi (Ito’s Romance) and Chobo zekka (A Magnificent View).

 

 

LYNNE KUTSUKAKE is a Japanese Canadian novelist and short story writer. Her debut novel, The Translation of Love, won the Canada-Japan Literary Award (2016) and the Kobo Emerging Writers Prize for Literary Fiction (2017). Her short fiction has twice been selected for The Journey Prize Stories anthology. She studied modern Japanese literature, and before turning to writing she worked for many years as a librarian at the University of Toronto.

 

 


Do not miss the opportunity to attend a special film screening of The Little House (in Japanese with English subtitles) between 7:00-10:00 PM on Sunday October 27 at Innis College, with Ms. Nakajima in attendance. After the screening there will be a moderated Q and A session with the author.
