Hayao Miyazaki, 2013, 127 min.
In Japanese with English subtitles
Miyazaki’s final film is a fictionalized biography of aeronautics engineer Jiro Horikoshi who, too nearsighted to become a pilot, dedicated his life to building the perfect flying machine. Episodes from Jiro’s life, including the great earthquake of 1923, his fateful romance with a young invalid, and the beginning of WWII, are interspersed with dream sequences in which he flies and converses with his hero, the Italian aeronautical engineer Caproni, and contemplates the dilemma of creating a thing of beauty which will ultimately be used for destructive purposes.
“To see The Wind Rises is to simultaneously marvel at the work of a master and regret that this film is likely his last.”
-Kenneth Turan, L.A. Times
“Miyazaki is at the peak of his visual craftsmanship here, alternating lush, boldly coloured rural vistas with epic, crowded urban canvases, soaring aerial perspectives and test flights both majestic and ill-fated.”
-Scott Soundas, Variety
screened in conjunction with The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness
