NINGYŌ: Art and Beauty of Japanese Dolls
Touring exhibition produced by The Japan Foundation, Tokyo
October 1, 2020 – January 12, 2021
The traveling exhibition “NINGYŌ: Art and Beauty of Japanese Dolls” was produced afresh in 2020 by The Japan Foundation Head Quarters, Tokyo. Under the exhibition title NINGYŌ, which means “human shape” in Japanese, the doll culture that has been cultivated over the long history of Japan will be introduced through over 70 carefully selected dolls, divided into 5 sections: “Ningyō to pray for children’s growth,” “Ningyō as fine art,” “Ningyō as folk art,” “Spread of Ningyō culture,” and “Ningyō and performing arts.”
