When you’re a bored teenager looking for thrills, sometimes the only thing you can turn to is rock ’n roll. Having no skill, money, or even a full set of drums, a feared trio of high school delinquents nevertheless decide they are destined for musical glory in a quest to impress their only friend Aya, avoid a rival gang, and – most importantly – jam out.
Winner of the Best Animated Feature Grand Prize at the 2019 Ottawa International Animation Festival and Best Original Music Award at the 2020 Annecy International Animated Film Festival.
This film screening is a part of the Together We Rise Arts Festival held at the Scarborough Civic Centre, Albert Campbell Square, and Cineplex Cinemas Scarborough on June 2 & 3.
Filmmaker Biography:
IWAISAWA Kenji was born in Tokyo in 1981. After graduating high school, he apprenticed under TERUO Ishii. He began working with video production on location for live-action movies and started producing animation on the side. In 2008 he released his first animated work, Fukuraicho, Man in the Tunnel Alley. Subsequently, after producing a number of mainly animated shorts, he began working on his independently financed film, ON-GAKU: Our Sound.
Animated almost entirely by Director Iwaisawa, and featuring a lead performance by Japanese alt-rock legend SAKAMOTO Shintaro, ON-GAKU brings its own sound and vision to the OHASHI Hiroyuki manga from which it was adapted. With pitch-perfect deadpan humor, the film presents a highly original take on the beloved slacker comedy: a lofi buddy film with a blaring musical finale that will leave you wanting an immediate encore.
From Director Iwaisawa:
I was able to realize this project with effort and guts.
I didn’t have the budget, so I was prepared to complete it using time, no matter how long it took.
