Hiroko Karuno, author of the recently published book Kigami and Kami-ito: Japanese Handmade Paper and Thread, presents a slide lecture on the process of Japanese hand papermaking  and the traditional uses of this paper in Japan. She will then demonstrate how to transform it into thread suitable for weaving into a wearable textile called shifu which has a long history in Japanese culture. This uniquely detailed method will be presented step-by-step, as it is documented in the book. There will also be an opportunity to see examples of cloth made by the author from handmade paper thread.

Hiroko Karuno is an expert spinner, weaver, and dyer who has exhibited her shifu and taught numerous workshops in Japan and in Canada. In 2010 she created a special installation of shifu in Nara, Japan, in celebration of the 1300th anniversary of the city’s establishment as the capital. She lives in Toronto, Canada.
