Sue, Mai and Sawa documents the enduring friendship of three single women in their thirties as they confront the challenges, indignities and rewards of work, love and family. Sue-chan is an inventive cook at a chic bistro who is struggling to adjust to a new leadership role. Mai-chan works in sales, but spends a lot of time covering for her incompetent boss. And Sawa-san (a few years older, hence the more formal honorific –san) is a freelance illustrator caring for her bedridden grandmother. Beautifully filmed and superbly cast, with a soft, aspirational gloss that belies the harder truths at its core, this is a sharply observant film that refuses to be dismissed as a simple chick flick.
