The Japan Foundation, Toronto will be presenting a film series called Tenpyo Art Screening Series and also an exhibition artist talk by Miro Ito, in conjunction with the current exhibition “Road of Light and Hope: National Treasures of Todai-ji Temple, Nara, Photographs by Miro Ito”. Nara was the capital of Japan in the 8th century. At that time a robust cultural style flourished called Tenpyo. The screenings series explores the precious legacy of the Tenpyo culture preserved and passed down in Nara for over 1,200 years.

GIGAKU, Reviving a Mysterious Ancient Masque
Documentary, 58 min. 2002
Giant masks from ancient times are stored at the Todai-ji Temple and Horyu-ji Temple. These are the reminiscence of Gigaku, a performing arts tradition which became extinct more than seven hundred years ago. The late Mannojo Nomura V (1959-2004), a Kyogen master, revived Gigaku in 2001 in the belief that the tradition of masked pantomime theatre travelled along the Silk Road, absorbing local arts on the way to Japan. This is a documentary of the collaborative performance of multiple nationalities, such as Chinese, Korean, Indonesian, Indian, Congolese, and Japanese, which resulted in an outstanding celebration of humanity.

GAGAKU, Music for Eternity
Documentary, 28 min. 2009 in addition to other videos of full performances of Gigaku.
Transcending time and space for hundreds and thousands of years, Gagaku, the traditional music of the Japanese Imperial Court, represents the spirit of an ancient time. Gagaku was introduced from its continental birthplace to Japan between the 5th and the 9th century, becoming fused with ancient Japanese music and adopted in the Nara and Heian periods as the traditional music of the Japanese Imperial Court, a tradition which continues to the present. Gagaku is the oldest orchestral music in the world.
