Yumiko Katsuya Ceramic Exhibition

October 19-27, 2012

Artist’s Message:

Time flies so quickly. It is astonishing that the thirtieth anniversary of my life with pottery making is approaching soon. During the pauses in my work, many scenes and people from the past in my pottery life reappear in my mind one after another.

And I am still the same me, one who enjoys the challenges of exploring the unknown, being totally free without interference from anyone. I still have a spiritual interaction with the clay. It is so much fun that I sometimes forget that it is time to sleep or eat. The only thing I wish for in my pottery work is progress, something which is possible because in my heart I still feel so young.

I am always preoccupied with experimenting with new ideas for my works. Year round, I feel constantly short of time. My modest wish is that my works can be appreciated and loved as art objects as well as by being used.

For this exhibition I created the pieces by following my intuition that came to me as serenely as a flowing stream of pure water. A variety of techniques, such as crystal glaze, fretwork, and Neriage (swirled coloured clay), were applied to materialize my ideas.

At this exhibition, I would love to serve you matcha(powdered Japanese green tea) with my most current creation of ceremonial tea utensils in demonstrations of a tea ceremony.
