Animated Short Films by Animation Students from the Tokyo University of the Arts

For Doors Open Toronto 2022, the Japan Foundation, Toronto is excited to present an impressive compilation of animated short films that exude vibes of rebirth, new beginnings, and renewed lives. Curated by the independent animation master YAMAMURA Koji, almost all of these wonderful films were created by students of the Tokyo University of the Arts (Geidai), Graduate School of Film and New Media, Department of Animation 東京藝術大学大学院映像研究科 アニメーション専攻.

These films will be playing on a loop in our Event Hall on Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29, 10:30AM – 4:30PM. Details and registration here. Free Admission.


Before Dawn 薄明

One cold and damp morning, two weasels were wandering the quiet streets. They get separated at one point but are reunited. Just then, bells and alarms began to ring through the city, and dawn came.

A middle school boy, who likes to snap photos of things he fancies, and then draws pictures of them. On his usual route home, he spots the girl he likes with another boy. The balance between his delusions and reality is in constant flux.

I try to remember what your hand felt like on my back when I was a child. And now I place my hand on yours, bent from pain. Like landscaped gardens are meant to evoke the four seasons and the cyclical wonders of nature, I gaze at you.

You always stumble before reach. The glass in your hand gets chipped every time. Then everything should start again from the start. There are, however, things you can discover only through repetition. The answer resides in yourself.

Registration

Due to COVID-19 precautions, we ask for visitors to register online prior to arrival. Six hourly timeslots are available for booking on Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29 for Doors Open Toronto 2022. Drop-ins are welcome if our capacity limit permits. Visitors can also register for the next available timeslot on-site.
