Janice Matsumura

Associate Professor, Department of History, Simon Frasier University

In 1991-1992, Professor Matsumura carried out a year of her doctoral research in Tokyo. Her focus was on the Yokohama Incident (1943-1945).

The fellowship allowed me to collect the research I needed to complete my doctoral dissertation and my graduate studies. My interest in the wartime period (1930s to 1940s) continued, but I found myself more interested in medical history and, specifically, the relationship between state ideology and medical knowledge. While collecting material for my dissertation, I was able to also find sources for this new direction in my studies. Consequently, I am indebted to the fellowship for some of my subsequent work.
