Online Teacher-Supported Self-Study Courses: Starter (A1)

Our Starter (introductory) course is for people who have little to no experience studying Japanese, and will cover the A1 level of the JF Standard. During this course students will work towards the following goals:

  • Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
  • Can introduce themselves and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where they live, people they know and things they have.
  • Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

There are a variety of FREE websites and apps students can choose from to prepare for the in-person lessons!

We strongly recommend students in our Teacher-Supported Self-Study Courses register for an account with JF Japanese e-Learning Minato, as their comprehensive courses provide everything you need to succeed! Starter (A1) will be based on the following courses on Minato:

  • MARUGOTO Plus: A website that supplements your learning with additional activities, explanations, vocabulary practice, and more!
  • HIRAGANA Memory Hint (iOS | Google Play Android | Amazon): An app for studying the Japanese hiragana alphabet.
  • KATAKANA Memory Hint (iOS | Google Play Android | Amazon): An app for studying the Japanese katakana alphabet.
  • KANJI Memory Hint 1 (iOS | Google Play Android | Amazon): An app for studying the kanji introduced specifically in Starter (A1).

Class Size: The class size of our Teacher-Support Starter (A1) course is limited to 20 students.

Starter (A1) Course Fees: Each term (Fall, Winter, Spring) costs $90. (Completing the entire course from September to July will cost $270.)
*Payment is accepted only on a Term by Term basis.

Once a student has registered in the course and their registration has been confirmed they will be sent a Square invoice (please refer to the registration process). A student’s position in the course is only confirmed once full payment has been received.
