Rakugo: Japanese Traditional Storytelling Performance at JCCC

co-presented by the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre and the Japan Foundation, Toronto
subtitled in English

Get ready to laugh this February! The Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre will host a “Rakugo-kai” with veteran Rakugo star Yanagiya Sankyo.

He became an apprentice to Yanagiya Kosan V and received the high shin’uchi rank in 1981. A gifted performer, he is famous for his ability to portray the subtlest emotions of a character during a performance.

In rakugo, a lone storyteller in traditional garb sits on stage. Using only a paper fan (sensu) and a small cloth (tenugui) as props, and without standing up from the seiza sitting position, the rakugo artist depicts a long and complicated comical story. The story always involves the dialogue of two or more characters, the difference between the characters depicted only through change in pitch, tone, and a slight turn of the head.  Absolutely fascinating and guaranteed to leave you laughing.
