
The Japan Foundation, Toronto is pleased to hold an open competition for small travel grants for graduate students in Canada for the AAS2026 conference happening in Vancouver. Applying individuals must have received acceptance from the Association of Asian Studies selection committee for the AAS2026 conference in Vancouver. Panels focusing on Japan will be considered.
Please be advised that the support will be partial and only a limited number of applicants will be selected for support.
Eligibility:
- Graduate students (masters or doctoral students) enrolled in a Canadian educational institute
- Project with a Japan focus
- Confirmation that panel has been accepted by the 2026 AAS selections committee.
Priority:
- Panels which demonstrate significance to the field of Japanese Studies
- Applicants who have clarity in vision for developing as scholars of Japanese Studies
- Applicants who do not have other sources of funding
Coverage:
- A total of up to $500 per applicant for transportation, accommodation, and conference registration.
Application process:
- Applicants must first apply for and receive approval from AAS for presenting at the AAS 2026 Vancouver conference.
- Please submit the following to apply for Japan Foundation’s small travel grants:
i. Proof of acceptance from 2026 AAS selection committee
ii. Proof of currently active graduate student status in a Canadian university (i.e., Latest academic transcripts or enrollment letter)
iii. Abstract regarding panel/presentation as submitted to the AAS
iv. JFT Application form with signature
v. JFT Budget application form. Only following items will be considered for partial support:
a) Roundtrip economy class airfare to the AAS 2026 conference in Vancouver
b) Up to two nights of accommodation (max AAS discounted rate *to be announced later at AAS website)
c) Registration fee for AAS 2026 conference (Student rate) - The Japan Foundation, Toronto will screen applicants and decide final funding allocation. Results will be announced in mid-December 2025.
